Help SD card crashing LG V40

Hello all.

Yesterday (02/24/2021) at approximately 1900 hours, my LG V40 ThinQ stopped recognizing my SanDisk Ultra 128GB Micro SD xc card. My phone was unlocked, and I went to access a painting app that was stored on the SD card, and I noticed it was greyed out. Upon further app inspection, I realized everything on my SD card was not currently being recognized. At this time, I shut my phone off, believing a restart may be required. (Side note: I turn my phone off every night and let it charge overnight.) I turned the phone back on approximately 1 hour later, and it became stuck in the boot sequence. The phone will get to the point of allowing me to unlock it, and show my background. It will state "Android is starting..." and at the top it will show the SD card icon that it does on startup when it is reading the SD card for the first time after booting. A few seconds later, the screen will go black, with the exception of the top toolbar and the bottom toolbar. The touchscreen becomes unresponsive as well. After a minute or so, the Verizon loading screen will come up (Verizon logo with pastel loading dots) The phone will remain here until I perform a forced restart with the Down Volume and Power button.

Safe Mode is inaccessible to me when the SD card is in, as the long press on the touch screen Power button will not bring up the secondary menu. I have accessed and successfully transferred over much of the SD card data to my PC (it notes that some JPEG files are corrupted), although the PC initially has issues with reading the SD card. Attempting to repair the SD card on the PC (Windows 10) leads to an endless loading bar. Can anyone help me save this SD card from a formatting, or worse, an untimely demise? I bought it new approximately 1 year ago.

You're giving me hope here. Because my SD card was not being read by my v40 so I thought it was dead. But I haven't tried it on a laptop. Hopefully it's just the phones. I really need the contents of that SD card.

It sounds to me like you own a counterfeit microSD card. They look good. They read the correct capacity. But they're actually cheap, no-name low capacity cards (usually no more than 8GB) that have been hacked to read a higher capacity. The only way to know is to use a tester. I prefer Fake Device Test because it will literally count every storage bit and show you the total. If you have a 5-gallon bucket, it can be marked "50 Gallons" all day long... but there's nothing you're going to do to put any more than 5 gallons in it. Let us know the results of the test and we can go from there.

This does sound useful. However, I cannot access any apps or even my home screen when the SD card is installed. I am stuck in a boot loop. I have "tricked" the phone by allowing it to boot without the SD card installed, then putting the SD card in when the phone is fully up. This, however, causes the phone to immediately freeze and go back to the continuous boot loop sequence. The SD card came in original, sealed, SanDisk packaging from Amazon. I am aware that this can be faked. I don't know how easy or financially viable it would be to utilize the same specialty cut plastic, with thin sticky plastic backing, inserted into the cardboard sleeve, with full color printout on both sides. I payed about $15 for this card. Those margins can't be great. I would still certainly attempt to use this app if it was possible for me to do so. I am willing to try anything at this point. I just don't want to format it. I'm afraid of what pictures I may lose. I had recently downloaded Amazon Photo, and was actively backing up all photos on the device. I only had approximately 200 left to back up before that happened. But you never know what pictures of the kids may be lost. I really appreciate the reply.

Best of luck to you friend. If you are not able to access on your computer, there are programs such as Recuva that may be of help to you. It helped me out on a failing external hard drive.

I can't imagine any Android phone NOT booting up because an external storage card isn't inserted. This is starting to sound like a corrupt system... at this point, you may want to consider taking it to your carrier store to reflash the operating system. They can wipe the entire phone and rewrite everything. Hopefully that will fix the phone, at which point you can insert the microSD card and try again.

But if you can't access your photos and files on that card with a computer, that's a big problem with the card.

As the chief described, have you tried resetting your LG V40? After reset you can insert the SD card in LG V40 and check.
Is LG V40 booting normally without SD card?
Have you checked this SD card in other devices? if not please try once.
Also please check if any software updates are available for LG V40.

I have tried resetting the phone multiple times. When attempting to go into the boot menu after reset, the phone screen gets all scrambled when the SD card is inserted.
The phone does boot normally without the SD card.
I have checked the SD card in my PC. It pops up a Read error, but does still allow me to access and remove the files.
At this point, I have copied everything (except a few corrupted files) off the SD card, and onto the PC.
I will write the SD card off as a loss. I have purchased a new SanDisk 256 GB that appears to be functioning beautifully.
