Both the Moto G Stylus and the TCL are threatening to do just that. The sad thing is that they might have enough storage space for that to happen. How can this be prevented? I think there's been enough permission denials and the like, but just in case...

Lucky you...I don't why they try to push this stuff on us. It should be optional, in my opinion. Unfortunately, the only "options" seem to be now and later.

Your carriers have control-freak tendencies to a degree not seen elsewhere. Not sure why: possibly because the US phone market is dominated to a greater degree by contract-subsidised phones than in many countries, possibly because historically 2 of your 4 big carriers used a technology (CDMA) which gave them control over which phones you could use (i.e. for a long time you had to register the phone with them rather than just stick a SIM card in it). Whatever the reason they seem to have a culture that because you bought a phone through them to connect to their network they really should control it. US carrier handsets are also typically the most locked-down when it comes to rooting (it used to be that some carriers were more open than others, but I get the impression that they are all pretty bad these days - at any rate their Samsung handsets are always locked tight).

This update business reminds me a lot of Windows 10: most people I know who use it have stories about how at some moment Microsoft decided that their updating "your" computer took precedence over the work you were planning to do with it.

Yeah, I wish I could have Linux on phones, though of course that's what Android is. I would think someone else could develop a competing operating system based on Linux. Of course, there would be the problem of convincing people to switch, given Android's penetration...

I guess it's unlocked. It's a Motorola Moto G Stylus from Target, fulfilled through B & H Photo. It was delivered to the store. How do I find out if it's unlocked? I noticed something about unlockng the bootloader under developer options, but I don't believe that's the same thing.

I really feel like people should stop recommending fxtec.
I'd absolutely love a good Linux phone, but this company seems shady as heck.
There are lots of customer complaints; lots of people who want their money back...
Here are just some of those voices: Link1, Link2, Link3

Is that yet another failed kickstarter type thing? The perps have nothing to show, many backers howling, and are now out of pocket.

Yeah. Pretty much.
I can summarize a little:
I'm not sure how fxtec got to the point of creating their first phone, because they only really grabbed my attention when they started working with XDA.
But it seems, they sold their first phone for a while through their official website (which was already 'problematic' according to the first link),
and then partnered up with XDA for some overhauled "special edition" of that first phone.
From what I read and since the company already had the gleam of being established, many backers believed the promises fxtec was making, not realizing what a legal pitfall crowdfunding can be.
And then apparently they screwed their backers real good! (Links 2+3)
I mean, imagine buying a Snapdragon 835-phone for ~$700 and instead >hopefully< getting a Snapdragon 662-phone for ~$900(!) --- shipped 6 months later than initially promised.
With no chance of getting a refund.
That's about the gist of why people are 'a little worked up'.

This should make for a nice companion piece to the summary:
(both pictures just taken at fxtec's official campaign)
