Now, we know why Sprint took so long to release the 2.1 update

with all the odd problems i am reading from owners that have updated to the new Official 2.1 upgrade.

we now know why it took so long for Sprint to release it. There are still a lot of bugs! They still cant get it right.

They must have felt the pressure from the public, and released it knowing that it had issues.

I am sure glad that i had ROOTED my phone months ago (the day after i got my HERO), and have been rocking a Custom 2.1 ROM for over a month. With No big issues (few small issues :p ).
Frankly this just re-enforces my resolve to stay away from Official ROMs, and will be supporting the Hack/Custom community.

You know the "I have a custom ROM nyah nyah nyah suckers" type posts are irritating. (While that may not be the intent of people posting "I'm rockin' FreshDAmage 98.7.0555.3" posts, that's how it comes across at this point.) Pretty much every freaking person on the freaking web knows there are custom ROMs available. Some of us have chosen not to. For a variety of reasons. For me (and one of the big reasons I haven't done an install of 2.1), it's Bluetooth performance - which neither HTC nor any of the cooks seem to have got right (I've seen reports that one of Drach's new ROMs may have done it right).

Blaming Sprint is blaming the wrong party. HTC released it. And I'll join in a "righteous anger fest" against them. They got a lot wrong (from poor design to how poorly it was rolled out). Sprint and HTC can point fingers at each other all day long, but my blame is aimed squarely at HTC.

I had a custom rom and was rooted for a while. You know what...I always had problems with every custom rom and eventually I would have to re-flash the rom to fix stuff. I got sick of it and went ahead and installed the new rom even knowing I would lose root. No complaints so far. Sure there are issues but they don't outweigh the issues I had with the custom roms so far.

Yeah, no kidding. Its not like we are all nit-picking at tiny little issues. There are major bugs and glitches and overall bad performance issues with 2.1. I am thoroughly pissed at Sprint for releasing this update, and HTC for designing an update that is this lame. I wrote HTC a pretty nasty email, but I doubt they will even answer. I have heard that they haven't been replying to anyone who has sent them issues regarding the crap-ass 2.1 update they released.

I haven't had any problems with 2.1 I think it's great. Then I read about the audio loss problems (and others) with custom ROMs, and I'm grateful I didn't root. I don't need my phone to be high maintenance. To each their own.

ok.. i am glad you and others are having a great experience with it... :)

just that there are a lot that have issues..

problems with the custom ROM, you know there are devs and forum members that are helping out and trying to support the mod phones.
which is a hell a lot more than the Official side!

That's the truth!

I guess my battery life hasn't been as good with the official 2.1, but I'm syncing more accounts (exchange and gmail), so I'm wondering if that is the reason.

Sprint doesn't have Android OS programmers on pay-roll.

Do you know who actually wrote our release?

HTC did.

Don't be ignorant.

Official 2.1 and the leaked are the same (matching MD5 keys)...

I only rooted so I could back out of the 2.1 and I'm running the stock 2.1 with no mod's to it. I'm very happy pre-update and post with the Hero and have had no issues with it.

That said... yeah the battery life is somewhat diminished now, but we'll all find the cause and fix it I'm sure...

Regards!

ok... i know.. used the wrong name and did not explain myself to u..
I had lumped HTC in there with Sprint.

Google did the OS
HTC added the sense
HTC built the Hero for Sprint

which I dont really care!!!!!! because...

SPRINT sold me the phone! so I am going to sprint for issues!!! :p

Im just curious what the point of this thread was to begin with? Ok so your "rocking a custom rom". Annnnnnnnnd you wanted us to know because? Hundreds of people are "rocking a custom rom", did you build a custom rom you wanted to share with us? Are you developing a custom rom you wanted to share with us? Have you done anything anyone here couldnt have done to "rock a custom rom"? Hey Im rocking an official rom. Isnt that just totally awesome dude? You know whats really awesome dude? My rockin official rom has one issue, my dialer was lagging once in a while. You know whats even awesomer dude? So are the custom rom dialers. Even more awesomer dude is that we all could have totally rocked a custom rom by reading the same posts you read dude but we chose not to.

So rock on brother with your rocking custom rom. To you I hand the "greatest rocking custom rom rocker award"

I am sick every time I have a problem, and post on here, I get the "root the phone" answer. Instead of a suggestion, or even an answer to my problem, I get 40 "root the phone" answers. Half the time "rooting the phone" will not fix my problem, or has anything to do with the problem.

I have avoided rooting as well, just didn't want to deal with the problems.
I installed the last leak and had some niggling issues and a week later installed the "official" update and it fixed my niggling issues. My BT is still wonky but it was the same with 1.5 so I deal with it. Overall my 2.1 has been great, maybe not perfect but much better overall than 1.5.

I see no reason to root the phone yet. I say yet because I forsee in the near future custom roms being the way to go. Just not yet in my opinion.

Ok then, heres my fact and opinion. Fact: I ate taco bell today. Opinion: I will smell very bad later.

I figure that contributes about as much as this thread does to the community so maybe I should share my daily food intake and gas results daily.

If it's all the same to you, I'll "pass" on the daily gas updates. :D

(oh boy, that's bad)

Speaking of tacos, have you had one of those fish tacos? Ive always been a bit afraid of those things but I hear they're really tasty. I would think it would remind me of a date gone wrong. Fish in a taco...never a good combination.

I too am sick of the "root root rom rom custom custom" answers. The worst is when you ask a question, and their response is "I don't know the answer to your question because I am running a custom ROM, and don't experience that issue". LMFAO. Isn't there a "All things root" forum for them to display their hard on's for their "awesome" rooting ability?

The bottom line is that we shouldnt have to "root" and do custom ROMs to get a decent OS anymore that we would have to do this with Windows or Apple. I should be able to trust Google, HTC and Sprint to release a reliable official OS and updates to follow.

Now Im not sure that I trust them and will be more careful in the future.

Sooooo true.
