Hello. Since July first all pictures that I download don't have an extension anymore. I can't post, share or open them. I deleted a lot of "empty files" until I found out, that I have to go to details and add a .jpg extension to the file and there it is... But why did "the phone" stop doing this by itself? And how can I get it back to downloading files as .jpgs?

Thank you very much

Could it be something in the settings of whatever app you are using to download?

What app are you downloading with?

I just hold the finger on the picture and then it says "download picture". I tap on it and there it goes. It always worked until July 1st ... When I go to download I "a file" and when I go to details, change, i add .jpg and then I can open it but without doing so, it just said tt-0994737 or something for a file name and I don't have a program to open it...

Maybe something was changed in the whatever it is website you're downloading from? Rather than a problem with your phone or tablet. If a server is pushing out files without suffixes, like .JPG, then that's what you're going to get.

My phone is a Samsung 8+. The thing that changed is facebook. Since July first it always wants me to do in their app but I don't want the app. I do everything through the browser. Since I get this "use the app" messages (July1st) I have this issue... but I found it also with other pages... So it's most likely that facebook changed something so I can't download pictures from their side anymore?

So you are using a browser, right?
That is what I keep asking.

What app are you using?
- a browser.
What browser are you using?

I don't mind that you don't want the app- I don't either.
But I need to know what we are working with so that I can try to help you.

Anyway, from what I gather here, you are using a browser to view Facebook, and you want to download pictures and are having difficulty doing so recently.

Now, two things.
Pictures tend to be pretty easy to download.
At the very least, you can screenshot the page and then edit the picture so that it no longer looks like a screenshot.
Generally this works fine for memes and such.

Second, Facebook has made it increasingly difficult to download videos.
It can still be done, however often the video and audio will be downloaded as separate files- and you have to reassemble them yourself.
Although a pain, it can be done with suitable results right on your phone.

Since you mentioned pictures, let's start with that.

I am going to open FB in my browser on another device right now, and see if I can download a meme or something that someone else has posted.

While I do so, I am going to type what I am doing.

Remember that I am using IDM+, and an older, modded version from what is normally available (the standard app abides by FB terms and services, and so may not download from there.)

1. open IDM+
2. use FB bookmark
3. log in
4. found meme immediately
5. tap the picture
6. long press 'view full size'
7. select 'Open in new tab
8. long press the picture
9. select 'Download image'

Image is downloaded.

It has been this way since I started using this app, so I see nothing new here in how it is accomplished.

Yes, that seems like a lot of steps to take, but really, after some practice, it only takes seconds.

So, now that I know it still works with IDM+, I know it will work with Lightning- the browser that I suggest to anyone that is having difficulty with their browser.

The reason that I know it will work is because the browser that is used in IDM+ is a modded version of Lightning.

So the steps would be exactly the same as above.

My guess is that your browser would work too, if you added the step of 'view full size' and long pressed the picture and then tapped 'Download image'.

The browser/app I use duckduckgo and I did/do the same steps you wrote down. Which I really appreciate. It always worked that way until July 1st... It always downloaded the pictures memes, etc... July 4th I wanted to forward a meme and I received the message that the file couldn't be read. So I looked up the file in my file folder and... since July 1st, every download shows a black square and I can't open it... After deleting everything July 1st and up (Yes, I'm an idiot) I found out, that the file extension is missing. So I do the same steps I ever did, same like you but now in duckduckgo the download is screwed up...

First screenshot is what it looks like, when I tab on the picture to download it and the second shows what the picture details were until July 1st in my gallery, after I downloaded it and I when I still could see the picture and everything was good.

The 3rd screenshot is what it looks like now in my gallery and what the picture details say...

When I add a .jpg it work again but I have to do that with every download and... I have to change the name too because it seems to name all this downloads the same...
