DON'T PANIC!!!!!!!!!

i missed the opening ceremonies. and quite frankly i am not so sure i'm really interested in the Olympics this time around. i'll probably catch some events. but with the pandemic still raging on and some Olympians from the US will miss it because they tested positive for covid, it will be different and just not as watchable.....especially when there will not be any crowds at the events.

anyways, will you guys be watching it? what events are you going to be watching?

I hope I enjoy what I see of it in a sporting performance context (only way I could write that), but yes.

    However:

A : some prominent competitors may be missing or have to withdraw; of course many never made it over there - eg. Johanna Konta won't play tennis for GB

B: Some will under perform for a combination of reasons - like accommodation, restricted movement etc

C: Yes the complete lack of spectators is a major bummer, but currently understandable in Japan who are making the best of a bad situation

D: I dislike and disagree on one minor aspect I've noticed already, having watched major sporting events recently. They should allow medal winners to accept and be photographed on the podium unmasked. I'm pro masking and vaccines etc but this could be done and it's a real shame for them.

E: Something major imv has now spoiled my favourite area, Athletics / Track and Field, particularly middle distance and sprint events.
World records of the past have been ruined by these new spike shoes that now everyone has to wear to be competitive.

I can't see myself getting emotional about many achievements in any sport this time around, but let's hope there will be unexpected drama that we can enjoy. That's what live sport is all about.

    Interim Olympics 2020 / 2 maybe.

What the hell was I watching while flicking through BBC highlights today?

I'm not a fan of basketball, sorry, but this was 3 player basketball on a smaller court around one basket.
Weird and a bit ridiculous, but it had the main elements of the game I suppose.

I'm a huge fan of most all sports. Something about the competition I find entertaining. I'll likely watch some Olympics but I'll be squeezing in my viewing between baseball games. I've got to watch my Royals lose and the Padres win. A fan is a fan. Besides, I never was big on track and field. I like the winter Olympics sports better.

I started following SD when they picked up Hosmer from KC. Never was a Dodger fan.. well maybe when they were still in Brooklyn :) I don't dislike them.. just not a fan. I dislike the Yankees. The only team I root against no matter who they are playing. :)

I have never been a fan of sports.

I was hoping that the lack of such trivial poop due to Covid would be the awakening of the masses to the fact that we do not need to fund adults playing children's games nor hold these folks up as idols.

Amazing win in the Ladies Cycling Road Race.

Anna Kiesenhofer of Austria, a diminutive unknown without a pro team set off with 40k left. Had a 5 minute + lead around 20k from the second lone breakaway of Annamiek Van Vleuten, one of the favourites from the Netherlands.
The Dutch lady was caught by the group, 2 others broke away to try for medals but were eventually caught.
Van Vleuten, who crashed while leading in Rio, broke away again and finished 1 min behind the fantastic Austrian.

Van Vleuten thought she had won, as no radios were allowed, and no chalk boards displayed She asked a TV cameraman at 40k, and was told by another at 10k the leader was 45s ahead. She then assumed the leader had been caught at the pace they were doing. No bitterness after the finish.

Both leading ladies interviewed separately in English nd came across extremely well.

    Great, tough win.

man i have my doubts on the US mens basketball team. i hope we can pull it together. losing to France in the first round is not good. its tough for us because even though these are professional basketball players, they have not really played together like some of the other countries. but these guys play in the best league in the world so i see no excuse for them to play so poorly. i hope they can raise their game or they will be out of the Olympics sooner then they think.

edit: so far i think the winner in events that grab my attention is swimming. there have been some great races on both the men's and women's events.

I remember a time not so long ago when professional athletes were not a part of the Olympics- only amateurs were allowed.
well it happened in 1992 when professional basketball players were allowed to compete. nicknamed the Dream Team. it featured Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, John Stockton, Patrick Ewing, David Robinson, Clyde Drexler, Scottie Pippen, Chris Mullin, and Christian Laettner. https://bleacherreport.com/articles/435593-the-greatest-team-ever-assembled

though i do not know why Christian Laettner was on the team.......never liked the guy mainly because of his Duke days LOL.

i don't mind them being on the teams now days. i just hope that they can come together to get the gold.

i keep missing the surfing events. interesting to see that sport in the Olympics.

i feel bad for Simone Biles. she is getting unwarranted attacks on her for withdrawing from the Olympics. She is the GOAT for ladies gymnastics. if she wants to bow out of competition so be it. if her mental state will cause the US a medal, then that is her call to make. i'm also glad that she is getting equal support for her decision as well.

since when did golf become an Olympic sport?

and at least we killed Iran in basketball as we should. we finally looked like the team should be. i just hope we play like that for the gold.
