Froyo on Droid: NO WIFI TETHERING?!?!

Guys, before you get upset, be real. Why would Verizon or any other carrier allow something that they charge $59.99/month for to be free on all of their devices? What carrier does that on all or even more than 2 of their devices? Imagine the network strain and loss of money for the carrier. It's possible that they will allow it, but don't be surprised if they don't.

Verizon already does it now with the palm pre +. The wifi hot spot feature is free with that.

I know that, and that's why I said why would they allow it on all of their devices. Then I said, "What carrier does that on all or even more than 2 of their devices?" They may offer it, or they may not, but be realistic, and don't expect them to give away $59.99/month on multiple phone models that would be strain the network, and also make them lose out on money. Do you all know any other carrier that allows something like this on more than 1 or 2 of their devices?

I certainly don't expect them to give it away for free. That said...

The majority of the people I see respond to these, perfectly reasonable, questions about whether Verizon will allow Tether as though that's a proposterous notion. Isn't that a bit harsh?

Sure, the fact of the matter is, VZW permitted free WiFi Hotspot for the PPP to help clear their shelves (I in fact encouraged a friend to buy this phone for that primary reason and he's quite pleased). And we've all seen other hardware features restricted on phones. One of which would be the GPS feature on phones. But, there in lies my reason for seeing this 'question' as not being completely obsurd.

My BB Storm had a GPS that I could enable for Location or 911 service. But, even when in Location mode, my Google Maps still had to find me via Cell Tower triangulation. Then, comes Android 2.1. All of the sudden, phones get FREE GPS. It is not like this is a new hardware feature. If Verizon chose, they could still be requiring a charge for the near worthless VZNavigator inorder to have any GPS support, but they're not.

So, once again, do I expect them to give us free WiFi hotspot? Nope. But perhaps we can lighten the assault on those that are hopeful.

I came to verizon expecting to pay for the right to tether if it was offered with this phone. My wife loves her palm pre and free hot spot, but the keys where just darn to small for me. Ill be also looking at cheaper alternatives like Clear or something. If the Palm Pre Plus was a success, we all know that we would not see this free hot spot at all.

And I'm sure the six Palm Pre + users are very happy with it.

Well I am pleased to be one of those six then. I got a Pre as a secondary phone just for that free feature. I had my Droid on the secondary line but the WiFi hotspot was just too good to turn down. So now I have my Incredible on the main line and the pre on the secondary and sometimes use the Droid via the Pre's hotspot. LOL

What are the odds??? It looks like the Six Palm Pre + users are all on this forum.

The advertising says that tethering is possible and available, not that it's free on the Droid Incredible.

I used it this past weekend and it was quite good. It's a feature that can be turned on and off for about $25/mo prorated, so when I travel I turn it on and for less than a dollar a day I have guaranteed internet access.

Much cheaper than what Boingo wants in airports, T-Mobile wants at Starbucks, and any number of hotels want in their rooms.
