Help Bluetooth takes a while to connect to hands free

I have been having an annoying problem whereby my phone takes somewhere between 2 and 10 or so minutes to connect to my car's hands free kit.

The handsfree is a factory fit bluetooth unit in an Audi. I've had the car over 2 years and with my previous phones (SE W810i, K750i and C905) the connection was always made within 15 seconds of turning the ignition on.

With the Desire it takes so long sometimes that I can have reached my destination before it connects!

Any suggestions?

Hi, have you paired the bluetooth unit to your desire. Pair the bluetooth unit and then check to see how long it takes. I did have some problems connecting to the headunit in my car so I removed all the BT widgets and only installed one and it seems to work now. I am using in-app bluetooth toggle (it has no screen widget, just long press the search key and you can toggle the blutooth).
I also noticed that if you keep the wifi on this affects the sound from the bluetooth headset. It seems to be working now.

I'm using a standard ford BT unit and that seemed to connect fine once i'd paired the device as staz stated above. My issue (and perhaps could be something that is causing your connection to be slow) is that for some reason, the handset will connect fine, but when i go to make a call it has disconnected. It seems to happen when moving between signals i.e. from 3G/H to G, i know there is an issue with BT being lost when a Wi-Fi signal is dropped, but has anyone ever experienced this with the data connection?

Not being funny mate but the fact that my bluetooth does connect eventually should have told you that I have paired them. I don't have an issue with turning bluetooth off and on either, I use the android power control widget.

I did have a problem the other day where the BT would drop in and out every minute or so (I get a bong on connection and disconnection) and realised that I had Wi-Fi on still. I turned it off and that problem went immediately. Normally once the phone has connected it stays that way until I pull the key out and the car's BT unit powers down.

I haven't ever looked at the 3G/H status when getting into my car though and I hope this isn't part of the problem.

It's a little frustrating as with my C905 I had BT on all the time and the connection when I got in my car was seamless.

I use an old Sony Ericsson headset which I quite like and I have found that the phone bluetooth has to be switched on first then the headset otherwise I get a long connection delay. If bluetooth is on in your car all the time, maybe it is a related issue.

What about turning bluetooth on on the phone as you are going to the car. If you are already doing this, then apologies and i have no clue what can be happening.

Yep that's exactly what I do mate. There have been a couple of times where I have forgotten and I turn it on after the ignition and it'll connect straight away but normally it's the same as the other way.

My Desire (Android 2.1) has just been sent back to O2 because I was having the following problems with Bluetooth :
the phone paired with several devices (Audi A3 UHV Stereo, Ford Mondeo Stereo, Nokia Headset), a call could be made and the person at the other end could hear me BUT no audio from the call was routed through the car speakers or into the Nokia headset.
My partner has HD2 with Android (2.2) ported on to it an the BT on this phone works fine with all these devices.
I told O2 this, phone was sent for repair. They said they had fixed the issue and upated me to Android 2.2 BUT I have exactly the same problem.
The only difference is that the Car now displays all the contact details whereas before it said 'please wait' but never displayed them.
I also tried the updated phone with an Audi A4 MMI Stereo and this also failed to route the audio from the phone to the speakers.
I guess that because some people have managed to get it to work there must STILL be something wrong with the phone.
I have searched loads of threads and no-one seems to be having much luck so all I can do is send the phone back again for repair?!
I have tried all the things people have recommended eg switching on BT before you switch on ignition, unpair and re-pair, reboot phone etc.
Its very frustrating.
I don't think anyone can help on here, but I want to share this with others so people know they are not alone with this problem!

I can't really help you I'm afraid. Mine has worked perfectly since Froyo.
