Help me prepare for Droid (Gmail/Outlook question)

I opened a gmail account for the sole purpose of syncing it with my Outlook to get my mail (my only email account is my work email). We have POP and IMAP (Yahoo) through our ATT account, so I configured my Gmail to work with my POP account.

This works good and the Gmail has started getting my POP mail, but now it is not coming to Outlook. I need my mail to still go to Outlook even if Gmail fetches it.

Also, I thought it was supposed to merge my contacts as well, but it hasn't added any contacts.

Any suggestions?

Edit to add that I just got an email in Outlook that did not show up in Gmail. I suppose it is a matter of which client does the fetching first, and once it is fetched it is off the server. So, I really just need to set it so that it stays on the server even after one fetches it.

Edit 2: OK, I found the setting where I can tell it to save the email on my server, so I think I solved my problem. Now just to figure out how to get my contacts over (as well as syncing calendar, tasks, etc).

My Outlook calendar synced without a problem but I think I had to install a client on my computer to do it. I'm almost positive that I got the link for the client from the Gmail program itself. Go to the import/export link and see what it says.

The Droid has built-in support for MS Exchange - you'll get automatic email, contacts, and calendar sync to the phone. This is one of the most amazingly wonderful features of Android 2.0 for me. You don't need to do any gyrations w/a Gmail account....

The article below confirms this is available w/the $29 data plan:

Great guys, that Google Sync worked fine (after some fine-tuning). THe only problem I have is that my Gmail on the web does not seem to want to fetch any email that Outlook has already downloaded. I can set Outlook to still get it if Gmail gets it first, but I can't do the reverse. I would like to fetch my mail on my phone even if Outlook is running here at the office.

But, if it means making sure I turn off Outlook before I leave the office for lunch or meetings, that is do-able. Thanks!

From what I hear you can, indeed, set up a pop email, but they say that the gmail client on the Droid is better. I may just do both and see what happens. Also, by using gmail I can sync my Outlook Calendar with the Gmail version as well. I wish I could do the same with tasks and notes.

Here is a crazy idea for you...I have done something similar.

I would forward all your POP e-mail to your new gmail account. Then set up your outlook to sync with your new gmail account. Then you could use gmail web or outlook as your e-mail client. In lthis case, all e-mail would be available on your outlook or the web (unless you delete it in one of those places).

Let me explain...

I have had a hotmail.com address for 12 years now and I don't feel like trying to change to g-mail address now. So instead, I have my hotmail forwarded to my gmail account. When I reply using gmail, it sends it through my hotmail account and the reply to account is my hotmail. So to the person who is getting e-mail from me or sending me email, it is the same as before.

Yes, I did something very similar just yesterday. I found that there is a sync feature between Gmail and Outlook for both mail and calendars. The mail is native in Gmail, but the calendar requires a separate download from Google. The Gmail can now fetch my POP mail, but only when Outlook doesn't get it first! But, even if the Gmail client gets the message first, Outlook will still fetch it. I wish that went both ways, so I don't have to remember to turn off my Outlook when I am out and about.

Check your settings in gmai under POP. Make sure you have enable POP for all mail (even mail that been downloaded) selected.

Knickerbocker: thanks, I will try that again. I thought I had done that but it did not seem to "stick". I will try again.

Jim: the problem is that my IMAP is with Yahoo Mail, which is not currently supported on the Droid (from what Rob says here on the site).

Edit: just went to check Gmail again to make that change and it HAD downloaded a handful of emails from yesterday, just getting them very late. Not sure of the rhyme or reason. Maybe it picked up stuff along the way when Outlook was turned off during the day, but just delayed getting them to me. Or, maybe it it is just catching things hit and miss. I hope to get this smooth before tomorrow morning! :0)

I looked at that and it seems to be saying that Outlook will pull in my Gmail email, but will that also work the other way, with Gmail pulling down my regular email account?

I am not really sure how that all works. I think it your case gmail is a client, like exchange. That is why I recommending setting up mail forwarding which actually sends e-mail to your gmail account vs just having gmail pull the messages off a different server.

OK, I have set up the IMAP in Outlook as instructed, but have not yet deleted the POP account. Does anyone know whether there is any problem having both running (other than possible duplications)? My first test email from my secretary did not come through to Gmail, however. I expected this from the POP account since Outlook had already fetched it, but I was hoping Gmail would pick it up via IMAP. I might have to delete the POP account, but I am still concerned that setting up IMAP just means that Outlook can get my gmail mail.

Hello~

New to everything I guess. Sync with Outlook! I have been searching the forum and I feel that I am closer to solving my problem by reading these responses. But I need a little more help as I am a BB user and live & eat by my Outlook but "LOVE" this phone so far (some adjustments still need to be made) and would love to move forward with my new Moto Droid.

I need to know how to sync my phone & outlook together some how. I have already tried gSynict and it just screws everything up in my outlook and constantly tries to delet contacts. I am aware of Companion Link and have no problem paying the $40-50 bucks! I would pay a $100 if I could just move forward and enjoy my phone instead of trying to get it to sync. I do have a gmail account BUT I use a yahoo account (on Outlook) for business and have done so for over 10 years now. I AM NOT WILLING to change my address! I have tried dumping my yahoo into my gmail (and vise versa) and checking off all the items that indicate it's coming from my yahoo account on the web but when you actually send an email from Outlook it says "@gmail on behalf of @yahoo". I don't want people to see the "gmail" account at all.

I know this is going to sound dumb but the only thing I miss on my BB right now (ok maybe a few others) is my outlook sync. Please don't say to go back to BB because I really don't want to!

I would greatly appreciate any advice or solutions anyone may have. And please keep in mind......I am not stupid but I am not droid savy either... :) So if you could be very simple and direct it would make it so much easier for me.

Thank you!!!! To anyone that offer some help.

Is there any problems setting up a pop3 email account on the Droid ?

I have pop set up but something is really wrong with the email app. It doesn't download all my new mail just some of them and does it very late. Does the same on 3G or WI-FI. Very curious. I have no problems sending mail I'm just not getting all of them. I've also had email mysteriously drop out of my inbox. They're there when I get the notification but when I go back into the inbox some are gone...something is really borked and I'm not sure it's operator error.
