Help 2.1 Problems - Issues - Quirks

Sprint tech support called me at 10:00 last night, to see if I was still having problems. I told them I was & they wanted me to do a hard reset on my phone. I told them I would rather not do that, esp considering it's not likely to fix the problems. They assured me it will fix most of the problems. I wasn't able to do it with them on the phone last night so they were supposed to call me back at 11am today. I'm still waiting for that call back! Not that I'm in any hurry to do a hard reset, it would just be nice to feel like they're at least trying & not giving the old "We're working on it" line. I honestly don't think there's anything at all they can do about the problems right now, other than send me a new phone that still has 1.5 on it. I'd rather they just get the problems fixed so MY phone can work the way that it's supposed to.

A hard reset is very easy to do by yourself if you don't want to wait on Sprint to call back

Press HOME > MENU, then tap Settings > Security > Factory data reset. On the Factory data reset screen, tap Reset phone and then tap Erase everything. To reset the phone using phone buttons, with the phone turned off, press and hold the HOME, END CALL/POWER, and BACK buttons. The reset process will start after a few seconds

Just curious, and this may not make a bit of difference BUT - there seems to be such a huge disparity between those who are having issues and those who are not. Would the 'With Google' phones make any difference with this update vs the older ones? Just a thought...

Well no idea if it makes a difference or not, but im on a "with google" phone, and to be honest with you, I have none of the issues everyone seems to complain about in this thread.

Is anyone else bugged by the new calculator? It no longer has even the limited, advanced functions it used to. Which is odd because it seems to be the same one as on my wife's Moment 2.1 which does have these functions. To top it off, now it's a lot uglier to boot. Yes, I know I can download a ton of others, I just don't get why HTC seems to have stripped those options out of it.

If you turn the phone sideways it turns into a scientific calendar with more features than before. Kind of like the iphone...

ok, sometimes when i want to make a call from my recent call list, it takes FOREVER to actually start dialing. It takes so long i will hit the number again and the phone will actually think i want a conference call. very annoying.

also Sense ui will crash alot and randomly.

video playback will be smooth at first but then gets laggy and choppy and eventually stops.

keyboard seems even laggier than 1.5

Yeah...I'm seeing the dialing delay from call history as well....literally up to 20 second delay!

Edit: It seems this is my first post here... so "hi!" I've been lurking for quite some time and am actually surprised at this...

Random reboots & Awake 100% of the time... I think they're related.

I'm running the official 2.1 release from Sprint, released May 19. Never rooted...

Anyway, I think that the awake 100% of the time isn't so much related to FB as it is the random reboots... Here's what happened... The day before yesterday morning, my phone was rebooting every five minutes or so on it's own. When I got a moment, I did another (third?) factory reset and that seemed to fix the problem for the day. Later that evening, I was out 'n about, and I fired up Google Maps... as soon as I did, the phone rebooted. So, I tried some other GPS-using apps (Camera, Compass, Goggles maybe?) and each one of them crashed as soon as the GPS icon appeared in the app or notification bar... (At this time I was running 100% awake, too)

So, yesterday morning, I did another factory reset. Didn't sign into FB for HTC Sync, and slowly and methodically checked my apps as I installed them. I did install the update for Google Maps, if that matters... But I checked the GPS throughout the day and nothing really happened, I had 12 hrs of uptime, and approximately 60% awake time (better than 100%, plus I was charging throughout the day too). So, yesterday evening, I noticed that the awake time was keeping up with the uptime, so the phone had stopped sleeping and was awake 100% from that time forward, so I logged into FB for HTC Sense deciding it wasn't the problem. When I fired up the GPS on the phone to take a picture, guess what... it rebooted. Again.

So, here are the theories...

1. My phone's GPS is broken/wonky... Before the 2.1 update, my GPS would occasionally say I was somewhere totally wrong, like several hundred miles east or west, but a reboot would fix it... maybe the 2.1 update doesn't handle this as well?
2. 2.1 Broke GPS functionality, and 100% awake time is the sign that the phone will reboot itself if the GPS is activated. AFAIK my phone is still in this state, but hasn't rebooted itself since I turned GPS off.

Edit 2: I think when the phone was constantly rebooting itself, I had some widgets that would occasionally use the GPS because I had network-based location turned off (eg. weather). Also, sorry if this has already been discussed, I haven't read all six pages of this thread yet.

Edit 3: Booting into safe mode seems to let the GPS work properly... Now booting regularly I can access the GPS again... interesting. Still seems to be awake 100% of the time, so I suspect it won't last.

What about anyone else here?

I finally took my phone into the store yesterday. I told them I had a list of issues but the biggest one being that the phone doesn't always ring when I get a call. The rep's response....my ringer volume was turned down low. Not off...just low. REALLY?? Like I'm that big of an idiot!! I assured him that was not the problem. Of course when he called the phone it rang! He reset/reconfigured that slot index cycle & told me that would fix the problem. It didn't! I had left the store, had several people try calling & it actually rang maybe twice out of 10 calls. I took it back to the store, they had a tech look at it, he said it was a signal problem & switched out the phone.
The new seems to ring just fine (so far) when I get calls but the signal is awful on it. I'm going to wait it out & see what other problems are or aren't fixed. Hoping for the best!

I have the same problem. Any use of GPS reboots the phone. So I have turned off GPS. I can open the GPS programs now but of course no GPS. But at least no reboot. Otherwise my phone and 2.1 is working well.
At first I uninstalled the Google Maps update and it worked OK for a while but then reverted to rebooting.
So I am at a loss....

First post here, been lurking for quite some time and enjoying all of the information and help from the forums. Well I have had my Hero (with google) pretty much since they came out. It has been a good phone with the normal complaints of the 1.5 that it had on it but it worked.

Now with 2.1 (not rooted, directly from Sprint) I really do not care for the way the phone runs. Some of the improvements are great but the quirks far outweigh the pros. I have hard reset the phone and reinstalled 2.1 several times. Seems none of the problems go away as it must be the OS causing the problems. Here are a few of the problems I have had:

Way to many reboots. Seems that about every other time I use the internet and go back to home the phone reboots.

When using the camera and sharing photos whether it is to facebook, Handcent SMS, or email I get reboots when I exit the camera mode. This sometimes even happens after I take a picture then go to view my pictures.

Terrible lag on alot of apps and keyboard. I have cleared all cache and it doesn't seem to help at all.

Alot of missed calls. some go to voicemail and some don't even show in any form. I have had alot of people tell me they tried calling several times and just gave up. Never had the problem before on 1.5. Also while talking to another Hero owner the other day, about 10 minutes into the call we both got notices that we exceeded the amount of time for a voice mail. It was funny when I hung up I had a voicemail of the conversation. Since then this has happened twice more when talking with the same person while she was on her Hero. This was even when I picked up on the second ring. The warning does not stop and you have to hang up to get it to stop.

SMS messages also occasionally get stuck in some type of loop. I get the same sms about every 10 minutes or so until I text the person and tell them to send another text. This seems to stop the loop. This happens on any type of phone sending me texts.

Same bluetooth issues as others.

Alarm doesn't always work and I have used the phone for my alarm since I got it.

Time does not recognize my time zone. It is set to the same local as before with daylight savings time and it keeps setting my clock back an hour when I am set to network time. Exact same settings as before and even shows the city correct.

This is just some of the issues I have been having. I would call Sprint but they will tell me to go thru the same steps I have already done several times myself and I really not interested in being on the phone for several hours. I am thinking about driving to the nearest Sprint store here soon. It just seems odd that the phone was fine before the update and now it runs just terrible (kind of reminds me of the older Microsoft OS). I am not here to complain just trying to figure out what I should do next. I am considering, weighing the darn $10 fee, buying the EVO and giving this phone to my wife but not really sure if I am going to do that yet.

Im curious.. Is the 2.1 problems only occurring on the hero.. or is the droid eris having this issue too? Does this mean the EVO 4G with 2.1 have these issues? I doubt sprint and htc will release a phone with all these issues..

Verizon is aware of the Eris 2.1 issues and are telling there customers they are working on it. Verizon Working to Address Issues Resulting from Droid Eris 2.1 Update | Android Phone Fans

My girfriend took her eris to the store yesterday. The tech explained that they were aware of the problems. They gave her a new phone and recommenced that she not update until they can patch the existing problems.

I will be switching to Verizon as soon as they get the Incredible in-stock issues resolved.

Been with sprint 10 years because of their low price. But I guess the saying "you get what you pay for" applies here.

I've been getting a lot of FC's for Maps, when the app isn't active. Presumably it is updating my location for Latitude, but its growing irritating always having the FC prompt up when I go to use my phone.

Dialer/phone lag is baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad. To the point of dialing, clicking Call, then phone kind of "goes away", and I'm back staring at the dialer again, so I being to dial the number AGAIN, then suddenly I'm in a call.

Are you running Google Voice? I am and have GV ask me each time whether I want to use my GV number or cell number. I was about to uninstall GV and see if that is the problem, but if you aren't running GV, I won't go through that.

I am giving this phone to my wife and getting the evo. The wait for 2.1 was just too long and it's not fun anymore trying to get this phone to work right. You can't even disable haptic touch for dialing. Using the phone and dialing out is a nightmare of lag everytime. My wife will dig this since she has the instinct now.

Now just to see how much the evo will debut at. Evo here I come!

Okay. This is just something that bothers me. With 1.5 When I tapped the Sun or Moon under the clock it would take your phone to a second page with the 4 day forecast at the bottom. Between the Refresh and the + sign on the right sitting between those was the bar that had the word Weather and below it the time.
With 1.5 if you tapped that it woyld take you to Accuweathers website. With 2.1 it will not do that. WELL NOT FOR ME.

ANYONE?

The Evo will be $299 with a $100 mail in rebate or Go to Bestbuy or Radio Shack and pre order it for $199 and no mail in rebate. Assuming you can upgrade your phone right now.

+1 on the HTC clock/weather widget not working correctly. Many times it loses information , no picture of the sun or clouds or rain, does not display date or temperature. When I click on it I get the "no weather data available". I do refresh but sometimes it takes 2 or 3 tries to get it to take.

Never...ever had this problem in 1.5

This is the same for me in 1.5 or 2.1 . No difference. Sometimes you have to try several times to update.
