Backup? (coming from iPhone...)

Hi there Android community :)

I'm coming from iPhone so please excuse the fact that I think in a "closed-OS-way" :p
I'm switching to the Desire for business purposes. Exchange sync mainly and then some apps for work and some for fun.
With the iPhone you plug it in iTunes, there's a backup done automatically and if for any reason I want to wipe my phone I can simply reinstall the OS and restore my backup.

I don't want to back up to SD card for security reasons (I know it's encrypted, still...)

I'm asking this because for the past week I've been playing with this toy like a child, installed 100s of apps and now I feel like my phone is kind of not as responsive as before. Like my iPhone ;)

The questions:
  • How can I backup SMS, settings of OS and apps, and apps to my computer once a week, the easier way. I need to keep a complete backup on my computer but don't need stuff like contacts/calendars (server synced) or music that can easily be transfered
  • How can wipe completely the phone, reinstall the most up to date OS (2.2 on Desire? Still need to read the news...) and then restore my backup?

Thanks!

I feel your pain. I'm new to Android too - I switched from a BlackBerry to the Incredible - and have asked the same question. From the answers I got, it doesn't look like there is a backup solution similar to what we both were used to on the other platforms. I can't believe it, but it seems to be true.

MyBackup Pro will deal with... everything, but it's saved to your SD card. For a cloud solution, look into WaveSecure and Mobile Defense. I recommend WaveSecure, though sadly free lifetime subscriptions for Android's not longer available.

I've only used Titanium Backup, which is for root users only, but I understand MyBackup and possibly Astro will do the same--and I've wiped my phone completey very often. All I needed to do to get everything back was pressing one "Batch" button.

There's nothing as comprehensive as the iPhone/iTunes system for Android.

I was looking for something to back up and save the phone state as a whole - apps and all - in one package. I was also looking for something to store the information away from the device (seems a bit pointless if your concern is loss/theft)

Yes, that is obvious, but not what he was asking.

He's talking about the state of the device (wallpaper, ringtones, alerts, layout, apps etc)

Blackberry have this, as does the iPhone. It's very useful indeed. Both of the aforementioned also have google sync abilities too, so they can sync calendar/contacts/mail easily OTA.

It's the OS state he wants to protect.

Does it offer backup to a computer over a usb connection?

This is something I'd quite like too...

Well, backup to sdcard, then copy the backup to your pc via usb.

Does the backup option in settings do this? You can backup an image of your phone if rooted.

On your SD card is a pc program called HTC sync. Install it on your pc to backup contacts and install apps from your pc when the desire is connected via usb in sync mode.

I think mybackup pro can also backup to an internet server.

Also, you can manually copy your SD card contents to your pc via usb.

You will have to wait for an over the air update to 2.2 from HTC, or download it from their site when its available.
