I'm almost positive that the Incredible stops charging once it reaches 100%

So like everyone else I have to unplug my phone every morning and plug it back in until the light turns green once more to get a full charge. I'm am 99.99% positive that the incredible just stops charging once it reaches 100%.

Every morning I unplug it and within 3 minutes it's down to about 89%. So I plug it back in and get ready for work and in about 20 minutes it is green and back to 100% (a real 100%).

I hadn't really thought about it until I used Google navigation for the first time this weekend. My phone was at about 92% when I left for my 2 hour trip. I plugged it into my car charger, which definitely works, and was on my a way. I looked at my battery about halfway there and it said it was fully charged. So i reach my destination, unplug my phone and it drops from 100% to 58% instantly. The whole day I thought it was the charger but on my trip back home I used the navigation again and plugged the car charger in. I started at 42% and when I got home I was at 89%.

So, it appears that once the incredible gets to 100% it just doesn't accept power from any charger anymore. Hopefully that can be fixed with an update. This was with the stock battery. I have no idea if it is the same with the TP2 or Seidio battery.

I wish it was like every other phone I've had that still had a trickle charge even at 100%.

You are talking about 2 different things.

1) Yes the phone seems to stop charging once it reaches (what it says is) 100% and for some reason never gets a full charge unless you unplug it, shut it off, and continue to charge.

That's #1 Now #2:

2) You used Google maps and navigation right? And your charge went down in the car? This is a completly seperate issue regarding your phone overheating where it also does not charge properly when the temps reach a certain level. You have to wait for temps to come down some before the phone accepts the the charge again. Me and a few others already had a thread on this.

I would think if it was from overheating in the car it would not have charged my phone the whole way home. But it did. And the phone never got overly hot on the way there or back. I didn't know my charge went down in the car until I unplugged it. On the way home I gained about 40%. I assume if the trip had been longer on the way home it would have got all the way to 100% and then shut off.

It was dark on the way there, I left at 4am, and Sunny on the way back.So I highly doubt it was from overheating.

Well every other phone I've had when I used navigation in the car I would always plug the car charger in and when I got to my destination the phone would always be at 100% because it had been charging that whole time. My wife's G1 for example doesn't experience this when using the navigation with the car charger.

Someone should put an ammeter inline with the Incredible and see how much juice it pulls and when.

You can't disagree with facts. When the phone is plugged into the charger it goes up to 100% and stays there. That is a fact!

My phone (when overheating) showed it was charging but the % stayed the same meaning it was plugged in but not acceptng a charge.

Definitely not true (for all Incredibles). When my Incredible light turns green after a charge, it does not begin losing battery power until I unplug it from the charger.

I've been wondering if this is the case as well. I noticed a few times that after leaving my phone plugged in but playing with it that the charge drops faster after unplugging than if I've just left it alone overnight. As if the phone sees 100% and doesn't check the charge anymore after reaching it until it gets unplugged. Maybe as a function of preventing overcharging? Therefore the light stays green and charge stays at 100% but drops quickly to its "real" level after unplugging. I did notice somewhere in the manual (I think) that said the phone should be unplugged once it finishes charging, which I thought was unusual but thought was probably a disclaimer of sorts.

I see. Yeah, I don't have this issue either. Regardless of whether I use the phone once charged or not, it still doesn't drop once taken off the charger for a couple hours.

I think the previous post that stated that an Incredible charged overnight doesn't really get charged to 100% is what is happening in my case. Tomorrow morning I am going to check the battery percentage before I walk and listen to music.

I agree with original poster.

The battery is likely reaching 100%, at least at one point that is. And the display stays at the MAX 100% level as long as the cable is plugged in. However, once you pull the plug, usually within a minute you realize that your battery life is really not at 100%, but at a lower level, depending on how long you had it plugged in, and how much stuff you did on it while it was plugged in.

I am convinced that the a) battery charging stops once the level reaches 100%; or b) the moment you plug it in, DINC determines how much charge you would need, and then the charge happens only for that specific amount. I think (a) is more likely.

For me too, every morning after a full charge, I see the battery level drops to around 90% level within a minute of unplugging...which is unnatural as I normally see my phone use roughly 1% of battery life in an hour when it's just sitting idly.

I think I remember someone posting that the incredible phone is wired in a way that doesn't allow it to use power directly from the outlet (i.e. you cannot turn on the phone without battery, even if it's plugged to the wall), therefore, the phone would be constantly repeating the process of stopping and resuming the recharging of the battery if it were designed to charge the battery every second it wasn't at the 100% level, perhaps shortening the battery life.

But yeah, I agree that it's annoying to not have a fully charged battery to freshly start off the day unless you charge it twice. Not sure if it would be possible to have a fix for this at this point...but it would be great if something could fix this!

I've been charging on an external charger, and it does a much better job. I can stay at or near 100% for a couple of hours, with the phone mostly asleep. I'm still worried about breaking the tabs on the back cover though, so won't be charging this way unless I think I'll really need the extended time.

I have same "issue" as OP, with both vehicle and wall chargers. I also concur that the phone stops accepting a charge @100%, and does not let the current bypass the battery to run the phone while plugged in. Once you hit 100%, there is absolutely no reason (that I can understand) to leave your phone plugged in, as it is not accepting external (charger) power for operation, nor is the battery charging.

Of course if you charge your phone with the power off (personally I rarely have my phone off) you won't have this problem, as it is not using power.

I may not have tested it long enough, but upon waking up this morning I grabbed my phone (which had been charging overnight) and turned on navigation, texted a few people, and played about 30 minutes of tetris. Then I turned off navigation and pulled it from the charger.

I'm at 95% now 20 minutes after unplugging it. So it seems to still charge once it has reached 100%.
