Apparently the built-in media player doesn't allow changing the rating tag on mp3 files stored on the sd card.
Is there a third party player that has a star rating feature similar to the iphone?
I saw that meridian lets you do basic tag editing but it seems kludgy for the rating. Want something simple like the tap or swipe the stars like on an iphone.

I'm looking for an MP3 player that will recognise the star rating already set in the music file. The players I have tried that have a star rating feature seem to default to 3 stars for all songs :(

Sorry to tell you this, mp3 id3 has never/will never support ratings

ID3 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

When you set ratings in any program, your actually making the setting in a proprietary file that contains user ratings, not the actual mp3 file its self.

Some programs have made efforts to use the same methods so you can import ratings for songs into their program.

In the same vein of importing, there are programs that will convert ex: itunes ratings into winamp ratings so they can be imported into winamp

The tag supported by Windows for star ratings is pretty widely supported, isn't it? But a conversion during import would be good enough for me - I still haven't come across one yet in an Android music player though. Do you have any suggestions?

Keep in mind WMP might change the way it stores user ratings with every version, but in the end, I have no idea whats "most popular".

What I do is I've already rated all my music in itunes, and then used smart playlists to manage what ratings I want to listen to. I sync these playlists over to my Nexus 1 and just listed to the playlist, and of course, Meridian lists every individual song as 3 star as expected.

I installed the doubletwist player to try.
I selected a song that's rated as 5 stars on my computer.
Doubltwist doesn't show any of the rating stars lit up.

I don't plan on using doubletwist on the PC for music management so I guess it's pointless for me.

Doubletwist is still a LONG ways away from being a competent syncing program. (at least the mac client was, when I tested it)
