NY Time Reviews the Droid

I prefer a phone that works, all the time, when I need it.

That has signal quality everywhere....when I need it the most.

For those reasons, and those reasons alone, the answer is clear, Verizon.
Whether you get the Droid or some other phone comes down to what you want the phone to do for you.

the iphone killer is can only be done by another iphone.

on verizons network

Put an iPhone on Verizon's network and VERY SOON Verizon's network will be just as bad as AT&T's. The iPhone uses SO much bandwith its not even funny. I get enough dropped calls with Verizon now, I can't imagine what it would be like with a million iPhones running on it. No thanks!

No you don't, and no it won't.

That is AT&T's cop-out. I've NEVER dropped a call on Verizon. In nearing 12 yrs.

I am having such a dilemma. Give my iphone 3GS to my wife and get the droid or stick with the iphone.

Any help with this?? But good review.

Well personally I wouldn't own the Iphone... but you do have a 14 day trial/return period in most areas to try the phone.... If it makes any difference to you a few of my I-phone Fanboy friends have already switched to the MT3G and Hero because as they put it they're just better phones... and the Droid is FAR and beyond better than both of those... Try it worst thing that can happen is you disagree with me and return the phone....

I get easially 5-6 dropped calls a day on my BlackBerry Storm.

This is either a lie, or there is something wrong with your phone. I've never had problems like that with VZW, anywhere that I've travelled in the US. And if you really had 5-6 dropped calls everyday, you would have spoken with tech support, they would have done a trouble ticket to determine if it was a network issue or phone issue, and you wouldn't still be having those problems, nor would you be putting up with it. 5-6 dropped calls per day is an extreme for most carriers.

Might be extreme, but not unbelievable. One of my friends has an iPhone, and if we're speaking for over 5 minutes, the call will almost certainly get dropped at least once. Now, I don't call him 5-6 times a day, but I truly doubt that I always happen to speak to him at the only time it happens. Plus he always just calls back nonchalantly...he's come to expect it.

This is not to say this is the norm for all iPhone users; I have friends in other parts of the city who, while they acknowledge it's not a great network and they get some dropped calls, it's not that bad.

:eek::eek::eek::eek:

I don't know how you endured that. I would've switched a LONG time ago.

I didn't know what a dropped call was until my friends got iPhones and I called them....and inevitably lost them.

If anyone on this board was a VZW employee, they could pull up my file and would be amazed at what they saw. I have called VZW so many times about dropped calls and have been told that with a BlackBerry smartphone device, dropped calls are to be expected. I wanted to switch, but I needed a smart phone and I wanted touch screen, so I was really limited to the Storm or the iPhone. I know that AT&T's network is bogged down with iPhone users, so I just stuck it out, hoping something better would come out.

Yes I have called tech support a million times (literally) for the dropped calls and just general device problems, and their solution to the problem is to dial *228 and resend the roaming towers. Once that is done if it doesn't fix the problem, they always end up sending me a Certified Like New Replacement Phone, indicating that I have a bad CLN phone from before- thats why I have been through so many phones.

At this point, I don't know what to do- Do I go with the Droid because its a new Android phone that cannot possibly be any worse than the BlackBerry Storm (even though its not the device I want- I want the Sony Xperia X10), or do I wait it out for the Sony phone that I really want, although I'm not sure how much longer this BlackBerry will hold on. I should go buy the Droid, use it until the Sony comes out and then just bite the bullet and cancel my contract with Verizon and go with the Sony.

VZW may just be bad in your area. I would go to another carrier and see if it's better.

IMO, service is much more important than device. VZW was lacking in the device department for so long (glad I waited them out :D) but now all of the major carriers have pretty good smartphone options, if I were you, I'd go with the carrier that had the best service in my area.

You call too many AT&T customers.

The *only* time I drop calls ov VZW (and I've had them all, BTW) is when on a mobile to mobile with an AT&T customer or (to a much lesser extent) a T-Mobile customer.
I've only dropped due to the following reason:
1. ATT/TMo customers.
2. Phone died.
3. Went down to the first level of my campus (the older parts of it is built out of concrete and I'm sure it could withstand against several bunker buster bombs).

I'm glad to hear people FINALLY talking sense and point out that there will never be an iphone killer, because there won't be. BUT, there can be an iphone KILLER. What I mean is there will never be a phone that will thrash the iphone in sales, but, HOPEFULLY, there will one day be a phone that will kick the iphone's ass in terms of being a much better phone. For you android fanboys out there, the droid ain't it. You're not gonna make a phone better than the iphone by out-doing it at what it doesn't do or do well, such as multi-tasking, swappable battery, expandable memory and whatever other weaknesses it has. The ONLY way to beat the iphone is to do those things AND beat it at what it does great. When a phone can beat the iphone in ease of use, smoothness of operation, browsing, have enough, not necessarily as many, apps, etc. AND do multi-tasking, have a faster processer, expandable memory, etc. THEN that phone might beat the iphone in terms of being a much more desireable phone. A few may say the Droid is better than the iphone, but when you have to qualify that statement by saying it's a better choice for techie people and those who don't mind a phone that's not as easy to set up and use, that's not really what I would call kickin the iphone's ass.

I'm not an apple fanboy. I'm someone who's waiting on the right android phone on the right carrier before I jump in. The Droid is very tempting, but not sure tempting enough to jump ship from Sprint and pay an extra $40-50 a month for. If the hero had at least a 3.5 or 3.7 screen I would more than likely have gotten it already.
