Yeah I would like some insight to this too? I currently have the samsung intstinct but will be uprgrading to the evo hopefully friday. I made a claim on mine cuz the lcd got messed up. It cost me 100 bucks(deductible) to get it fixed. Even after paying the monthly price for insurance. We have 6 phones for business. We are trying to figure out if it makes sense not to pay fo insurance. SOOO what happens when you do not have insurance and you have to replace ot fix your phone? What kind of cost are we looking at?? THANKS ahead of time for any answers

All I can say is I lost 3 phones in 5 years and another broke. For a $500 phone, the insurance is worth it.

I mentioned this here too but I think your credit card would cover you for double the normal manufacturer's warranty (up to a year).

It'd probably be a bigger hassle with a few more strings, but it's something to consider since it's free and automatic.

Yes, the insurance is worth it. The phone costs $500+. Even with the deductible, it's worth it. Best Buy isn't bad and neither is Squaretrade. I don't beleive that either covers loss, though.

I have been with Sprint for the past 9 years. Every time there has been an issue with my phone, whether its software or hardware, they have replaced the phone for a *refurbished* model. The refurbished model has always looked brand new, really, so I never really cared about getting an actual new one. Yes, I pay the $7 a month.

ALso, Ive never been asked to pay a deductible.

For what its worth, Ive never done the exchange over the phone via sprint. Ive always taken it to an actual Sprint retail store.

I think it is TOTALLY worth it. So far, in the past two years I have had a blackberry replaced twice (keyboard broke both times) and my Hero replaced once (was a totally ******ed phone and replacing it didn't even solve the problem). All were free.

I believe you only have to pay the deductible if it is YOUR fault. Like, if you lose it or something.

Best Buy Black Tie Insurance
- $9.99/m
- No deductible

If anyone can please add, that would be great. Also, The Black Tie warranty has a lot of negative reviews online.

The only time I ever had to pay the deductible on my Insurance is because my nephew dropped my Touch Pro in the toilet... Water damage requires the deductible and I think theft does as well. but still 100 bucks vs 500 is worth it. having said that you figure over two years that is 168.00 for insurance so maybe if nothing happens it wouldn't be worth it but as the saying goes "S%^t Happens"

I don't believe that is right. If it is a warranty claim, there is no deductible. If there is an insurance claim, there is one.

So, you are largely right but if it is determined to NOT be a warrantable issue, you'd probably have to pay.

Sounds about right but I have only ever had to pay the deductible on water damage.

Yes, it's worth it, replaced a few phones over the last 7+ years. Always refurbished that looked like new. Never a deductable charged.

Interesting. The CSR at BBM said that if I were to throw the phone and break it the Sprint plan wouldn't cover it. She implied it would be better off to just claim it as stolen and pay the deductible.



Anyway, after reading all the negative articles about the Black Tie Insurance, it's definitley not what I'd use to insure my precious Evo.

My wife and I have no insurance of any kind on our phones and have had the screen replaced on my Instinct once and my wife has gotten 4 replacement BB Curves. As long as you're within the first year of your phone any "defect" is covered by the manufacturer through Sprint. If you lose or don't take care of your phone, then insurance might be a good idea.

We'll probably get insurance this time, but so far it really wouldn't have been worth it for us. You just have to look at how careful you are w/ your phones, etc.

Does the BB insurace cover against accidental damage?

The Sprint insurance not protecting against accidental damage makes no sense to me. Wouldn't someone who damaged their phone then just need to only say that they lost it to get a new one? (And could probably sell their damaged one on ebay.)

Well, throwing the phone and breaking it wouldn't be considered "accidental" damage. And as far as claiming it stolen... the deductible would be $100 either way. Doesn't matter if it suffered non-accidental damage (throwing it), theft, loss... you would have to pay the deductible.

If it breaks under normal use, or if there is something actually WRONG with it they will replace it.

From what I am reading, for $7 a month, Sprint's insurance(called Total Equipment Protection(TEP)) covers ANYTHING that can happen to the phone with a $100 deductible.

Now here is how I am looking at it. I forget my phone is in my pocket as I toss my pants into the washing machine. It gets extreme water damage as well as cracking the screen. With Sprint's TEP, I can pay $100 and get a new or refurbished phone from them.

Now with the EVO plan, we're all going to eventually become Sprint Premier customers and be eligible for a new phone in 12 months if we all have our phones as the main line.

So $7 over 12 months is $84 plus a $100 deductible means that I am paying $184 for a replacement phone, which is less then what I would pay for the phone under a new 2 year agreement and a WHOLE lot less then I would have to pay for a brand new phone out of contract.

This seems like a great deal to me because even if something never happens to my phone I would only be out $84 over 12 months which honestly, I would have most likely spent on something stupid and frivolous anyway. But knowing that my phone would be protected from anything that happens is worth it IMO.
