HTC Hero bluetooth? What is it good for?

Hey

I am trying to use the bluetooth to transfer files from my laptop to hero and vice versa with no luck. I was then told the hero does not support file transfer or something along those lines??

Can someone tell me what the bluetooth is actually good for? Can I pair it with bluetooth headphones etc?

The lack of bluetooth file transfer is a problem with the android OS, not just the Hero. Basically, it's not a feature of android as yet. Hopefully the next version of android will change this.

There is at least one app on the android market that allows you to transfer files over bluetooth, and it's free, but I have not tried it myself, so I don't know how good it is.

I use it for my headset when driving. That's all I'vce ever used BT for.

Actually the two free apps don't work on the Hero, and I'm not paying $4.00 to see if the UK app works or not.

This is a simple task that's built into every other platform. There's no reason it can't be on the Android platform. It's even available on many non-smart phones.

I could pair my Hero with my wife's Nokia N81. But it could not get connected. So far I find the bluetooth useless.

The problem is not so much the phone as Android itself. Android 2.0 will have a lot more bluetooth support and the Hero will get this in due course as HTC are currently working on it.

It'd be awesome if you had some actual information to do that on the Sprint Hero. Because nobody else out there seems to have cracked that nut yet. Thanks for the sarcasm though.

um, bluetooth was first developed for headphones and headsets. If it didn't do THAT, then you'd have a point. But that's not the case, those both work fine. The headset/headphone function is basic, it was the first function, and the one most closely identified with bluetooth. When people think "bluetooth" they think "headset" not "file transfer". File transfer is a more advanced function and came later.

The fact that "everyone else" has something does not make it basic, it makes it popular or trendy.


If you actually read up on the subject, there is a security flaw with using bluetooth for file transfer in android, so it wasn't included and won't be until that can be fixed. This is a new OS, surprise surprise, there are bound to be a few glitches. Even mac has glitches, you should flip through their forums, they've got angry people too.

I had a WinMo phone for over a year. Not one update. In the year since I got my Android, there have been about 5 with a few more looming in the air.

The thing about google products is that they are CONSTANTLY evolving. Winmo will wait a few years before giving you anything useful, but they'll call it an upgrade and make you pay for it. Google will fix it without really making a big deal about it. You'll just sign into gmail and see "hey, what's that? Oh cool!"

um.... actually... bluetooth was developed as a replacement for RS232 (as in communication port). I don't know of too many headsets and microphones that use the serial port. I do, however, know of many modems and networking protocols that do.

Just because people "think" headset when they think bluetooth does not make it correct and the headset function came after networking. In countries like Australia, they were using bluetooth to communicate with devices such as vending machines before the first bluetooth headset was sold in the U.S.

Security hole shmeshmurity hole. Linux is a security hole... if they were really concerned with that, then they should have used a more stable OS for the phone (and yes, there are stable secure OS's out there and I'm not talking Windows or anything commercially available to the common PC user).

I have never used any phone with a bluetooth headset or accessory and always for file transfer, hey its free and fun to swap files with friends. I mean come on you must have heard friends or yourself saying, "I'll bluetooth it to you" ?

I had the same problem. I couldn't transfer files from my laptop to the hero (nor vice versa). I contacted htc support and they told me I should ask for warranty as it seemed to be a problem on my mobile!!!
Thanks to this forum I realised what the real problem was. So now I know all I can do with the htc hero bluetooth connectivity is to use my laptop as a headset!
