Help Wow phone overheats fast with gps in a car.

Now that the summer is here my phone starts flashing green and orange after about 45 min in the car charger with the gps on.

Does anyone know even what that means cause the phone still works, I guess it just no long receives a charge?

Yeah this happened to me to the other day while driving. Currently contemplating some solutions. Possibilities: A shade of some sort that attaches to the wind shield mount, or just placing the phone in the cup holder on especially hot days.

I didn't see any mention of the alternating flashing led's in the guide.

Its down in a little console area that gives it some shade, when I started having problems today it was 80 degrees. But on the way back I used the ac and it was fine then.

You mean you didn't use the AC in 80 degree weather your drive there?!?

As long as you have the ac on, you shouldn't have problems. However, when you leave the car, take it with you so it doesn't over heat.

Not always had all the windows down and sun roof open so I was comfortable at the time.

Was the sun beating down on the device? If it was, then that will definitely cause it to overheat.

Was running Google Nagivator and Meridian during a 6 hour drive, and Meridian kept skipping and resetting. Have a vent mount, so I turned on the AC and the skips went away. Or did I just turn off Meridian and turn on Slacker? Oh well, Slacker didn't skip once.

Red/Yellow is the overheat warning. I drive around in Phoenix (we've gotten to 100 degrees already this year) with my phone plugged into the car charger right after I start my truck with no problems at all. I've had it plugged in for several hours at a time with GPS running (yes, I know you should unplug from a car charger when you hit 100%).

Just don't leave your phone in the car when you leave it, and try to keep it out of direct sunlight. If you're getting a red/yellow, you need to be doing something differently.

exactly. a windshield mount is just a bad idea. i had my Moto Droid in the Verizon windshield mount and it would get hot even in the winter when the sun was shining on it. i couldn't imagine how hot it would have gotten during the summer.

when i got my Incredible i got a mount that mounts it away from sunlight. it actually mounts on an 18" long gooseneck that mounts to one of my seats mounting bolts.

may not look as cool as a simple windshield mount but it works very well and keeps it out of the sun, so it stays cool.

now i know the sun is shining on it in these pics, but 90% of the time it is out of the sun. i had my sunroof open when i took these pictures to let light in so i'd get good pictures. it always stays cool here.

I use Battery Minder... on a trip yesterday for an hour, Plugged into car charger and running Google GPS nav and Tracks(GPS app)... at end of trip noticed that phone was hot... it's in a rubbery bumper too. Batteryminder reported 120 degrees F and Battery overheated... Turned off phone. waited... turned on later without any nav and continued driving / charger then charged from 50% to 100% and phone was cool. So I conclude that GPS uses alot of cpu's and somehow causes overheating. Because I could later charge without overheating, I do not suspect the charger (Cellet 700mA). Currently using the stock wimpy battery. BTW, outside temp in Maine was 72 degrees F and overcast. I put the droid in between the two gages MPH and Tach on a Subaru Legacy... so even if sun, mostly shaded with overhang. I think this is a better place ..closer to a heads up display.
