it worked !!! thx but now the green text it doesnt say nandroid backup...what do i press

Click Backup/Restore
then select Nand backup
then press the home button to start the backup
After it is done, use the back arrow to get to main recovery menu and you can select USB-MS toggle (assuming phone is still connected to computer)
you can then copy the nandroid backup folder to your computer so you have it just in case something happens to your sd card, after you are done, select the appropriate button on phone to disable USB_MS toggle, then reboot phone.

Then...find a rom you want to flash, copy to root of your sd card, reboot to recovery (power off phone; hold home button(don't let off) power phone on(let off power on button while still holding home) continue holding home button while it boots until you get to recovery screen(green text)
If you select a 2.1 rom, you MUST wipe data factory reset, then go back and flash the zip you downloaded for the rom you want to run; after it is done, reboot (be patient - usually takes 5-10 mins).

Good luck - hope that wasn't too much info

ok i copied nandroind folder to the desktop.....now what do u suggest i flash??

There are so many to choose from: Probably Fresh 2.1.2 is a good one to start out with: Download: Fresh Rom 2.1.2 Geek For Me – Android CDMA Sprint Hero

I wouldn't update your radio just yet, just start with the roms at first. He has pretty clear instructions on how to flash it and what is included and removed. You can also try any of the roms here: Hero CDMA Android Development - xda-developers

Normally, you will need to wipe before flashing a rom from another dev or if going from a 1.5 to 2.1 or back.
