Root Rooting Telus HTC Hero

Hi to all,

I've been reading for a few weeks trough the forums and I've read lots of "How to's" but, it seems like Hero's from Telus are different. I can't create a backup image, I can't run the RUU driver... Flashrec will not work at all... I've done the SDK part and my gold card but that's about it! If ANYONE can help, I would appreciate it! I'm not looking for anyone to do the job for me, like I said, I've been looking and reading around for a few weeks and I tried a lot of stuff...! I guess I just don't have the right links for the right softwares!!

Thanks in advance!

I plan on trying to get mine rooted tonight. If I have time to do it. I will record all my steps and process' to create a very good tutorial of how I did it. so that other telus users in the future will finally have a very good step by step specifically for the Telus 1.5 Hero. not to say the the tutorials out there arent good... cause they are awesome. but I will *TRY* to create a very noob friendly version for Telus HTC Hero users specifically.

I may also record the whole thing and create a youtube Video Tutorial.

does any one have any insight into how long it takes from beginning to end including downgrading and installing sync, and all of the rooting process?

I am also going to build a very noob friendly tutorial of how to do it specifically for telus. no skipped steps no matter how obvious or insignificant they may seem. every key stroke and button click will be photographed, and included. I am also going to try to record the process and create a youtube video tutorial.

I am going to do this while rooting mine for the first time **fingers crossed all goes well**. I am prepping my PC(theres around 6 different things you need to download, and some install) for it every day after work and Friday (tomorrow) is D Day.

I am not as worried about my phone bricking because I baught a best buy insurence plan. so if anything happens to my phone I can get it replaced. as long as theres no way to prove I did anything. Ill walk into the store and play ignorant...

a few questions before i attempt this tomorrow.

1) is it possible to undo everything and go back to factory? even if you get half way through the process because its just not working?

2)after creating the gold card, and downgrading. will you need to use that gold card for ever or is that just a tool that allows the phone to be downgraded once.

2.5) after the phones been downgraded and rooted, can your format the goldcard and use it as a standard SD card in my phone again? (i only have the 1 MSD card) or will I need that again for future things...?

3)what does ADB mean. I knwo it stands for Android Debug Bridge (i think...). but what does it mean I have to set it up? wouldn't setting up the SDK do that?

1) Yeah, you can always reinstall a stock RUU and it will put every back.

2) It doesn't really matter what you do with the goldcard. It still functions as a normal card (with full capacity) and so there's no need to reformat it. But you won't ever need it again either.

3) You know command prompt on a pc? Android (being based on linux) has an equivalent tool, known as the terminal. But rather than using a terminal app from the market you can connect to the phone via ADB. This essentially turns your PC's command prompt into the android terminal. ADB is something that is installed as part of the android SDK.

Thanks for all the information!!

Had my phone for a couple weeks now and spent the same amount of time researching rooting.

The only question that I have is if Telus, or HTC for that matter, will void warranty over a rooted phone. Or even if they can tell once 1.6 is put back on.

Thats the only stumbling point I'm having over rooting and installing custom roms.

Good on you djbasik for wanting to prepare something for the Telus users :) it will help me in the next week when I finally take the plunge.

Assuming the phone actually works (it boots) then the phone can be put back to stock 1.5 so they couldn't tell anything had been changed.

But if the phone was a brick and wouldn't boot (which is very rare if you're following the guides) then people seem to be fine sending them back for repair. Yes, rooting your phone will void your warranty and HTC are perfectly within their rights to refuse to fix it. But, I've never seen anybody posting here about them doing that, everyone seems to be able to get a replacement off their network/HTC.

You have to decide if you're willing to risk it. IMO it's a very low risk, but nobody here can 100% guarantee for you that rooting wont come back to haunt you

Yea I'm Already working on a tutorial. I am taking all the other fragmented tutorials (one for goldcard, then one for downgrade, then one for rooting, then one for installing roms.) and putting them all into 1 neat and tidy place for telus hero users although it will most likely work on other hero's as well.

I am doing it befor eI actually perform teh root so that I can use the guide Ive created to do ti myself and edit it and improve it as I go along. and add screen shots.

You cant find the stock rom that telus uses ANYWHERE on the net...unless u backed it up before you started [utting on a custom rom, which if you did i would really like a copy of that rom. Also have you tried MMS with yr newly Rommed telus phone? I had a hell of a time to get my to work, then finally i had to put modaco on and then phoned telus and they fixed it for me in the nite....

Okay Finally got my phone rooted and working after a full sunday of trying to get ti to work.

I made a tutorial. and in theory it should ork. unfortunately I had some issues with windows 7 and had to sue an XP machine. I am going to go through the whole tutorial again today clean it up since I had a few issues.

I don have an official Telus rom unfortunately I didn't get one. Does this mean were screwed?

I also haven't tried MMs yet.

I am running Villian10 and it works great. Battery could be better though.

decent well i look forward to trying your tutorial.

I actually started the goldcard method last week, or tried at least. my computer doesn't have a card reader :s do i need to buy one? or is there a way to do it without?

To be honest I have no idea. I had to use my mac running windows. using the card reader. It was the only way I could get it to work. I also had to hunt down an alternate SD card cause the standard SanDisk MicroSD card that came with the phone would not work.

Okay so I finished the Tutorial. I have to get a new phone because I think mine is messed up. the light behind the buttons flicker after i flashed the rom. I think its a hardware issue.

When I root that one I will record it. and make a video tutorial.

VISIT http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-hero/96848-telus-htc-hero-root-guide.html#post903699 for the tutorial. I would post it here but its MASSIVE.

Dont be fased by the length or number of steps, i just went into extreme detail. at some point i took 4-5 steps jsut to explain 1 tiny little thing that only needs 1. but i wanted cazy detail for noobs.
