Need help understanding Apps2SD

yes, I'm a bit lost at this point.

I've flashed Flipz 2.1.2. 3rd ROM at this point.

I'm interested in utilizing Apps2SD, but I've got a few (a lot?) of questions. Having some trouble understanding what I'm reading out there and think that the best way for me to grasp it might just be to start my own thread and see if I might be able to find someone kind enough to answer my questions.

1) When running a ROM that has Apps2SD built in, you're not automatically utilizing Apps2SD, are you? I wouldn't imagine so if you've not partitioned your SD card?

2) I'm under the impression that just by viewing my SD card within windows, as it's mounted from my phone, I'm still not seeing everything. Is this the case? I can see the /sdcard folder from windows. However, is there another folder that I'm not seeing? A /system/sd folder? Am I not seeing it because it's part of the core?

3) In order to utilize Apps2SD, I understand I need to wipe my SD card. If I mount my SD card, access it from within Windows, copy everything over in a folder to my Windows machine, wipe the card, then copy it back, will I catch everything necessary?

4) That's all for now but I'm sure I'll have more.

Many, many thanks in advance.

1) If you do not partition your SD card then you are not running A2SD.

2) From my understanding you won't see anything on your SD card. I just checked mine with root explorer and didn't see anything.... Not sure why/why not though.

3) Yes, partitioning will wipe your SD card. I copied to laptop and copied back without a problem.

1. You are correct. A2sd only works if you partition your card for it.

2. I'm pretty sure you are seeing everything on your card when you mount it and browse the folders.

3. When I replaced my stock card with a larger capacity one, I did exactly what you said. Copy it all to a folder on the desktop, then put it back on the new card. (or the partitioned card in your case.) I have never used a2sd, so I am not totally sure about everything that it entails, but good luck!

TerrBear - you said you followed flipz directions? I'm searching his site for directions on how to utilize Apps2SD and I'm not seeing anything. Do you have a link by chance?

EDIT: http://geekfor.me/faq/apps2sd/

it's funny, I couldn't find it using the search on his site. I had to go look through the FAQ section...lol

Anywho, I'm all set up now! :)

ok - so since I've done this, I'm not running into some other issues with space.

Like when I try and install WaveSecure on the phone to make it a part of the OS and not just an installed application.

(As per here)

I'm wondering if I should be telling it to go to my SD card instead?

Code:
adb push wavesecure.apk /system/app

should instead be:

Code:
adb push wavesecure.apk /system/sd

??

the first one is correct if you want it to part of the system if you are useing a2sd then any app you copy into /system/app will be move to your sd card upon your next reboot.
However you will not see any difference in memory on your phone (I'm talking in setting>sd and phone storage>Internal phone storage) this will only chnage if you move dalvik to your sd card to do that goto adb shell and use command a2sd cache and it will move dalvik cache to your sd card word of warning this works best with a class 4 or class 6 sd card

What I don't understand is that even though apps2sd is working, my internal memory goes down the expected amount for apps too. On geek for me others have asked why but Flipz has not replied why this is happening. I had partitioned my 8GB card while using Fresh 2.0d and didn't revert back after moving on to Fresh Toast 2.1 and a brief trial of Fresh 2.1.2. So it was working then too, I just wasn't expecting it to, but the card was still partitioned.

Anyway, I just did the test Flipz shows on geek for me and apps2sd is working. Plus I explored the hidden section, and my apps are showing up as loaded to run from my SD card too. So I don't know what's going on. I don't need apps on the phone AND my SD card, lol.
