Micro-USB Questions

Hi All,

Just picked up the evo this morning at RS.

Was looking to get a extra micro-usb cable for my work and home computer, but am a little confused as to which ones to buy. I would think that any micro-usb cable would work, but I see on places like amazon that some of their micro-usb cables are product specific (i.e. blackberry, palm, etc.)

I usally ignore this thinking that like a normal HDMI cable, it is universal. But I got nervous when I saw places like merritline listed specific phones the micro-usb cable was compatable with, and no HTC phones where listed and in the comments section, someone with the Incrediable said that it did not work with his phone.

So, are micro-usb cables not universal (would the same apply to micro-usb car chargers too?)

That's what I thought, but the fact that the one guy said it didn't work on his Incrediable makes me nervous still............

Anyone try out a micro-usb cable that did not come with the Evo yet?

YES! And it totally failed. It CHARGED fine but I couldn't access the SD card or HTC Sync. I went NUTS for 2 hours until I swapped out the cable with the one in the box. The cable was one of those $1.29 cable off eBay that I was using to charge and update my Jawbone Icon headset. Grrrrrrrrrrrr!

That doesn't mean they all won't work but if you have problems try the stock cable.

Hey guys,

I know you can get cables cheap online, but for those you out there who are skeptical of those sites, you can do what I did. (I am not personally skeptical of those sites, I just needed something to spend my $20 RS credit on since my store had no cases or screen protectors.)

Anyways, I bought a Mini-USB to Micro-USB adapter to use with one of the 3000 mini-usb cables I had lying around. It was $12 dollars which is a bit pricy, but the thing is tiny. For those who don't want to carry a cable with them all the time it's a great alternative. Just leave a mini-usb cable at work and take the adapter. If it gets stolen, just grab another from home.

inb4 not everyone has that many cables....

micro USB B is fine. Type A will not work (it's square and meant for host devices). Good luck finding a type A cable anywhere... usually supplied with a compliant device, only. I've never, ever seen one for sale (I'd like to find a source, though, if anybody can find one for me!)
