Food for thought for handling thread moves...

OK, just a suggestion, but I started a post that lived on the main wall for less than a half hour that could have benefited much of the INC community.

Before moving items to troubleshooting, why don't you give the post a chance to be viewed and commented on and completely worked through. Say perhaps give it a 12-24 hour life span. That way when you do move it to support and troubleshooting it has some depth and value. Everyone looks at the main page first for hot topics, not everyone goes to troubleshooting right away.

Not offended myself, but I see a lot of great post moved way to quickly that often die becuase not everyone has had a chance to review.

I know that you want your topic answered swiftly, but organization is huge. When the Incredible came out, this forum was all over the place. Luckily the mods were able to organize it. I look in the troubleshooting thread, and I'm sure a lot of other people do too.

I actually got my answer within 5 minutes, all Im saying is allow for the topic to grow before moving it. We should be moving things on the 3rd page when the topic is no longer hot.

Again just a suggestion and I'm not upset. Just think it would benefit the forum a bit more.

First post here though not what I'd thought I'd be writing about. However, I've been a denizen of many forums over the years. The one thing stands true. Mods = The Law. There is a certain protocol to getting your post to live a long fruitful life. One way being to search out the topic to see if it has been talked about before. You would be surprised at how many people don't and get their hard work wiped out. Another, would be to place the topic in the proper place. If this were a topic as you say that would help the community, then putting it in the help/TS section would go far. Before calling out the mods (which is NEVER a good idea, because they have bigger guns than you do), make sure you have a leg to stand on. This is in no way a flame. I want to see all topics discussed and debated. I agree with the above poster that everything needs to be in the proper place.

Before I forget, Big thanks to the community here, I have learned a ton! Too many to thank individually.

Your friend in droid,
Hunter

The moving is GOOD.

Instead of cluttering the forum with the same thread questions over and over, they are putting them into child forums so that if someone needs help they know where to go.

Or if they need an accessory they know where to go. There are so many people on this forum that if they didn't do this it would be chaotic and the repetitious threads would be flamed to hell.

They aren't deleting your threads.

I think you're right and wrong. Most people don't look at the individual areas, and thus, the posts die sooner than would in the general public area.

This isn't a mod problem, as they shouldn't have to be moving ANY of the posts, they should be posted in the right place in the first place. HOWEVER I think they should find a way of getting people to look in those areas more often. This is more of a user issue than a mod issue.

My suggestion is this.

Creat an "active" page that encompasses postings from every group, that way you can look at the active page and see everything that's pending or recent, and then if you want a specific inquiry, go to that section to browse them all.

I think everything should be in a designated area, even if one area is listed as "general posts", but that ACTIVE folder is where the general public would look. This would tend to solve both problems pretty well, with less "moving" to be done by the mods, and more attention to the more recent threads, no matter the area they were posted in.

Here's a suggestion to the OP: post in the right sub-forum in the first place and your post won't get moved at all.

There's a reason there is now a specific sub-forum for Technical Support/Troubleshooting....because that's where posts relating to technical support and troubleshooting should go in the first place.

Bah, it was a very polite rant with a point. I have no reason to challenge the mods, just a thoughtful suggestion to let the post get to at least page 3 before they are moved.

Hey, I agree with you, a lot of posts in those areas don't get looked at. A lot of people know the answer to troubleshooting questions, but unless they have questions of their own, rarely go into that area. I don't generally go searching around for the sole purpose of answering questions, I go because I'm curious about something, however if I come across something I can answer, I do so.

It's a valid point, and I think my above suggestion would make the folders much more usable.

That's not how forum organization works.... You have to post your thread in the proper section, if not then it will be moved. It's the same as any other forum, get used to it. While they're very trigger happy to move threads out, some threads, like yours I'd imagine, should never have been on the general board in the first place...

The "Mods take a chill pill" title, doesn't entirely reek of polite, or friendly. Thoughtful would be "An idea before moving / deleting" would probably win the hearts and minds of not only the mods, but the community at large. Mods are people too, and when they see things like "chill out" and the like, they can tend to react in a different manner than you may have intended. That said, I hope your future efforts bear more fruit.

Well, it was a general question about folder management about the inc. Not a problem, not a tip or trick, not an accessory..... What I hear you saying is don't post in the general forum... even though everyone post and looks at the gen forum first for hot topics, unless there is a specific problem.

Jbuck: I don't appreciate the title of this thread, but I will answer it briefly as I've already addressed this topic more fully elsewhere.

1) This place got out of control and I saw the need to clean it up (hence the avatar "Mr. Clean.")
2) My desire was that good/true help threads get the exposure they need for a longer time by putting them in the support section. You see, putting everything on the main page just gets threads buried post haste.

That's exactly what i was thinking. When i saw the title on the main page i was like "come on dude, not another schmuck wanting some attention from mods" or whatever, and it turns out to be not such a bad topic. I can't imagine it leading to anything good with the tempers people around here have, but nevertheless the actual content wasn't all that bad.

It just goes to show, sometimes the means for delivery is just as important as the message itself. In this case the title probably already got most mods' blood boiling as we're doing everything we can to be just, act in the best interest of the forum, have the most thankless job EVER, don't make a nickel for doing this, etc, etc, etc.... I'm one of the most chill mods out there, i hate to infract, give every opportunity imaginable for "self-correction", try to mediate in the background, etc... but i know of plenty of other mods who are likely to delete this thread based on the title alone without even opening it...

Either way, just giving my observation and 2 cents. In more specific critique, while you may feel disenfranchised by the decision, managing it closely as we do and moving threads is the only way to keep this place under control.

EDIT: Changed thread title to give it a fighting chance...

Again, your absolutely right, I should have used better topic words. However, I think the thread is going quite well, and tempers are under control. Feel free to delete so tempers do not get flared, I just wanted to make a suggestion, and at the time my aggression was heightened to get attention BUT ONLY so they would read and comment on an actual suggestion. I have never been a d*ck in forums and I hope this turns out to be ok.

Edit: Thanks for changing title.

So do you think my idea is feasable? That would allow everyone to post their threads in the proper area, but still be seen by the general populus in the "active" area for which they'd likely browse all active topics.

This should eliminate 90% of the moves you have to do seeing as we would have to move away from the active topics to start a thread, conciously thinking about which area to navigate in order to place it properly.

Just to add....

When threads are moved, they invariably have a redirect left in place for at least a couple of days so that they don't simply vanish. The only time a redirect wouldn't be used is when the OP requests the move right after opening a thread i.e. it's received no replies.

I know it sometimes looks like we're micro-managing the site, but with the sheer volume of traffic AF is attracting these days it's the only way to keep on top of the information overload.

@Liquoredolce:
There was such a feature until quite recently on the main forum index page that listed "Most recent" or "Most active" threads. I'm not quite sure know what the status is regarding its reintroduction, but posting your idea in the Suggestions & Feedback forum certainly wouldn't do any harm.

IMO, having been on this forum(Incredible) since it started out as a single thread, and back when we didn't even have a fully confirmed name of the phone, I think the organization has done wonders for this forum. I think as the moving of the threads continue, people will eventually: 1. post in the subforums, making good use of them and 2. view them and post within them to keep them active. As you can see alot of the threads are going into those forums, so naturally, we are going to start viewing within there in addition to the main forum.

That's exactly what's happening. It's like training vines. Eventually, they get idea and grow (in this case, go) in the right places. ;)

i totally agree. i stopped coming here because the forum was littered with posts about the same topic over and over again. the new organization has made it all good again. great job by the mods and admins.
