I don't want a data plan.

I waited in line at the Sprint store for an hour and a half this morning before being told that i must have a data plan to buy the phone, and there are no current plans to sell it unlocked.

Somebody please tell me these guys are full of shit. I have wireless 95% of where I go. Dataplans cost more than all of my utilities combined. I cannot believe these criminals won't let me buy an unsubsidized EVO and use it as a normal phone.

Are you kidding? Data usage is what this phone is FOR! If you don't want a data plan buy an old-school flip phone where a data plan isn't required. Then you will be the only other person along with my mom who has a phone without a data plan. Sheesh.

plus I wouldn't call them criminals for not selling you a phone

Everyone's entitled to their opinion I suppose. I'm upset because the hardware is fully capable of operating without a connection to Sprint's 3g/4g network. They are forcing customers to pay extra to use certain services, even if they don't want to.

This phone is a beautiful piece of hardware, and I don't want or need wide-spread internet service. The fact that I cannot buy this tool without using Sprint's extra baggage is a cheap stunt.

Ok fair enough but to buy the phone just cause the beauty of it is kinda crazy. Its like buying a corvette and only driving it to go get your paper at the end of your driveway everyday.

The beauty of capitalism is that if you don't like Sprint's policies, there are 3 other major mobile phone providers and dozens of smaller ones in the US who would love to have your business. Vote with your wallet, it's the most persuasive tool ever developed.

While everyone has different preferences, even if a data plan weren't required I doubt that many people would buy an EVO without one.

I should mention that even at the retail price, this phone is heavily subsidized. The way Sprint makes a profit is through selling data. Of course, you could consider one of the older Windows phones that do have a touch screen and don't require data plans.

I think you find that all carriers require data plans on their top tier phones now. Oh well, it is just one of those requirements. It's sort of like buying a Ferrari and complaining that it uses premium fuel.

What exactly would you do with this phone with no data? Use it as a cell phone, be able to take some pics and vids?... I think that is about it.

Everything else related to the phone you would need data.... Unless you were within range of a Wifi connection.

Actually, it's like buying a Corvette and never going over 30MPH. Beautiful piece of art, but you aren't using it to any of its potential.

This is nothing new as a policy. Sprint has required data plans for some time on certain phones, another being the Palm Pre and the instinct so it is not like they are doing anything different in order to get the EVO (well with the exception of the $10 premium data fee).

Interesting.

I, for one, think anybody should be able to buy a Corvette and use it as a stationary bicycle support, if they so wish.

I don't necessarily think it is unethical for Sprint to push the data fees, but I don't have a problem with the OP buying a top-level phone and wanting it for calls and wi-fi usage only.

I agree.. anyone should be able to purchase it and do as they please with any product. but... there are costs that must be accounted for.

I think.. the EVO must cost more than $450 to make and distribute, market, development... Put on top of all that the profit that Sprint and HTC must make.

So taking this into account. there should be 3 prices to this Phone.
1. with 2 yr contract.. $199
2. with service and data... $450
3. Just a phone and without other services... $800-1000.

options 1 and 2.. they make their $$ profit back in the service.

These car analogies are complete bullocks. When I own any car, I can choose to put whatever fuel I damn well want into the gas tank. If I don't want to use premium fuel, that's my choice (even though it may be detrimental to the engine). And not having a data plan is not detrimental to the EVO!

A better analogy would be Ferrari making a customer use the car as a bike stand in between the times they drive it.

Look, I spend most of my time at home, at work, and out school. I have wireless access at all three of these places. I don't need expansive access to the internet because I already have free (or already paid for) internet almost all of the time!

Why do so many people feel that they need this kind of internet access, after already paying data fees for their internet/cable connections at home?

Fair enough... then they can give people that option to pay the unsubsidized price to use as they wish.

Won't ever happen in practice, especially on a CDMA device.
