Have we reached the upper limit of how big cell phone screens we be ?

The one leaded today, Sony Erickson, is rumored to have 5.5". I think it was Engadget who had it.

You know, I've written a line and erased it 3 times. There's just no way to explain to people that I've got big hands, and would prefer to have over 4" without snickering. And yeah, it's funny.

But I'm serious. I'm welcoming these giant phones. My hand cramps with little ones.

This is not going well.

Screen size has to evolve at the same rate as display technology, battery and power management technology. The larger the screen, the more power it takes to run so either battery technology, screen technology (hence why AMOLED was developed), or power management technology has to all be taken into account. I think this was one of the decisions that affected the EVO - that if AMOLED was used - it would push the price point well over $199 especially for a 4.3" display. So they sacrificed that to make it more affordable, but battery life has to suffer slightly because its not AMOLED. etc etc I don't want to ramble on

Evo is 4.3 inches dell is coming out with a 5 inch screen .How much bigger can cell phones get ? Would you want a bigger screen ? What screen size will become most common 3.2, 3.7 4 or 4.3.

Like I said in another post these phones are like cross over SUVs they are not smart phones and they are not a tablet computer but something in between. I think 5 inches might be a bit to big for it to be an every day smart phone however. I think EVO is the limit for me anyway.

Personlly I think we have hit pretty close to the biggest acceptable screen for phones... At 5 inches the inches actually start to look way bigger (yes yes I am snickering too.. that's what she said). I can't find it but watching the Dell guy show off the Streak it is almost Comical when he puts it to his ear. It is just at that too big for a phone. You would have to always use a headset with a phone that big which I guess isn't too bad but I personally can't stand them.

This is about it for me. I agree the resolution could go up. I'd like to see the cell phone manufacturers start working on quality issues like dust under screens, call quality, battery life etc. I'll always take a faster cpu and more ram, but it would be great if they'd turn their attention to improving what we now have in form factor with respect to usability.

With Bluetooth headsets, I don't really think there is a limit or at least that's what she said :D

I am really surprised that that thing they call an Ipad didn't also come with a phone, my business laptop which I guess is 17" or larger has CICSO IP phone software on it, so I can be anywhere and people can't tell if I am at home or sitting at my desk at work. No, I don't put it up to my head, I generally use it as a speaker phone, if I don't use a headset.

I think this is as big as they should be. IMO it's a littttle too big but not too much. The first thing I thought when I woke up this morning and grabbed it is "Man this thing is big". Didn't feel that way yesterday but I think as time goes on and I use it as my primary phone I have a feeling that the size might be a deal breaker. So far so good though.

screens, and phones consequently, will be getting bigger and bigger until the hologram technology will take off and then phones will start to get smaller again with screens getting even bigger (30 inch screen on a Palm PRE sized phone? heck yeah) can't wait, i'll give it 5-7 years

I've got an HTC Desire and have tried a Dell streak 5" and HTC HD2 {4.3" same size as the Evo- which we don't have in the UK:( }.

I'm using the HTC desire for a lot of browsing and creating content (emails, postings, mind maps...). The HTC Desire screen now feels too small though it's a great size as an all purpose device and carrying around). The 4.3" size feels just right and is good for browsing and is ok (for me) to carry around as a phone. The 5" Dell streak is brilliant for browsing etc. But just feels that bit too big to be carrying around and using as a regular phone.

All depends on how you see yourself using the device!

Personally, I hope HTC get the Evo over here in the UK!

And that wouldn't stop me wanting a 7" or 9" 'tablet' to use for browsing at home etc (if money was no object). At least with android, google docs, picassa, google reader, dropbox... I don't need to worry about data synchronisation across devices. I wonder if I log in using the same gmail id on different devices, if I would be able to download the apps I'd bought- without having to pay for them again?!).
