I've been in IT, as a developer for nearly 20 years. Mainly RDBMS. I've also a good OO understanding. As those jobs are few and far between and i've recently bought a HTC Desire, it got me thinking that with my summer off, i might re-train and get into Android.

Is it an easy market to get into? Is it flooded with workers, or a niche market?

I noticed quite a few jobs/contracts all over on jobserve.com

As i plan to X-train into "something" this summer. I'm considering this, but would like some information from more people in the know.

If Java is new to you, check out any of the gazillion (yes, that's a word...now) self-teach books on the topic. :) It's fairly comprehensible (for a programmer!), but it's terribly verbose.

As for Android specifically, the authoritative resource is Android Developers -- be sure to check out all the 'tabs' on that site, as there are a ton of reference material, tutorials, and sample code. Also, Google is hosting over 3.000 open source Android apps that you could look at for inspiration.

Good luck mate!

It depends on what you make. If it's something really neat and useful, people will fork over their money for it. But this is rare.

If I make over $1000 doing coding on this new platform, I'll consider that to be a 'success' :) . Just as with anything, I'd imagine that the whole thing would be pretty competitive. Nevertheless, it looks like a lot of fun, which is why I'm into it.
So i've found out that Eclipse is the IDE of choice and the code is either Java, or java-esque.

Does anyone have any links to tutorials for beginners?

Eclipse & Java are totally new to me.
Here's a good start:

Installing the SDK | Android Developers

Here is an ok book (at least that's my opinion so far):

Android is very similar to Java, the basic formatting is almost exactly the same. First I think it would be in your best interest to learn some Java (like the guy above said, there's a gazillion of books on the subject). once you have an understanding of that, you can start with Android
