how to update android 2.1 to 2.2?

See http://androidforums.com/all-things...brought-you-mdw-oc-flash-10-1-a-new-post.html on instructions on how to go to 2.2 - mind you this is an un-official leaked version of the OS, not official, and you'll need to have your phone rooted.

And yes, Android is just the Operating System - it'd be like you telling someone that you need help with your car and saying it is a gasoline-based engine...they are gonna want more info, like #cylinders, displacement, etc.

That's it?

LOL!

Like fab said, even the voided warranty is a non-issue because if you need to give your phone to verizon for service, your Droid can be taken back to pure stock and they would never know you were ever rooted...thus, your warranty would NOT be voided. I've been from root to stock to root several times and it's not that difficult to do.

Basically, there are no downsides to rooting IF you exercise a reasonable level of care when modding your phone. Aways follow directions and take whatever applicable precautions are called for. Really, it's pretty hard to screw up and if you do, there are plenty of knowledgeable cats on this forum that are always ready and willing to help (just don't be too proud to ask for help :p). And with regards to "bricking", I don't think we've had one incident of someone bricking their Droid to the point of being beyond recessitation (sp), have we?

Well, I guess there is one notable downside to rooting and ROM'ing: it is soooooo damn addictive (and fun...but that's not a downside ).

You've never connected the DROID to your computer to charge and to mount the SDCard?

Get the Motorola USB drivers v4.6 and install them (pick your architecture) - USB and PC Charging Drivers - Motorola USA

Next, connect your phone via the USB cable to your computer.

Now, on your phone, after connecting, you should get a new notification - USB connected. Bring the Notification bar down, press on USB connected, and a popup will ask if you want to mount the SDCard - say yes, and then you can access the SDCard on your computer just like any other hard drive.

Finally, copy the folder you extracted to /SDCard/Clockworkmod/backup/

I think for those of us with a background of using/tweaking/hacking computers for a long time now take for granted how much there is to learn if you're starting from scratch.

If you are looking to root and are a don't have a good knowledge of computers, you are going to have to be patient and be willing to do lots of reading and really learn what it is that you are doing when you are rooting your phone.

http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-droid/82742-all-new-guide-all-things-root-related.html

If you don't learn what it is that you are doing, chances are you may end up skipping steps, or not realizing when you are doing something incorrectly and are going to spend a LOT of time on these forums asking for help because you screwed something up.
