Tip - "HOW DO I" Settings with Android

that works with the native web browser.. I cant seem to get it to change with dolphin hd browsetr.. maybe there is a way?

Only if it has its own widget. Well you could clear the defaults of the internal browser under menu/settings/applications/Manage Apps. Not sure which one it is. Look for Browser select it and clear defaults. Then you might be able to set dolphin as default browser and see if the book marks widget will use dolphin. I highly doubt it but it might be worth a try.

sirslayer, just wanna say thanks a ton for being our very own evo help desk...you don't have to do this, so i truly appreciate you taking the time and energy to do so...you have helped me and i'm sure everyone else in here tremendously in learning the ways around the android os....thanks again

Awww Tear. lol thanks!!! I remember what it was like with my first Android phone. The Droid Eris. :D Happy to help.

I have to add though, of all the High End Android devices I do like this one the best. I have tested Most of them from the moment to hero to eris to nexus one. This one really shines.

how do i get to the download history page...i downloaded handcent from the webpage, and it went to that page, but i can't find it

You are trying to find history? or where the file was downloaded too?
To get to browser history:
While in the browser click menu/more/History

If you are trying to find the file download Astro File Manager from the Market and use it to browse your SD Card. All downloads will be in a folder called download.

My girlfriend joined the world of Droid phones by purchasing the Eris. I've been using the Motorola Droid for 6 months now. The problem I ran into was sending her a picture message and when she pushed her finger and held it to download the picture... it wouldn't do it. How do you download a picture via text message?

Also... any good tips for applications?

i love to see an organized storage card, i plugged up my EVO and there are folders all over the place on the storage card, I currently have a 16GB from my Blackberry thats organized (ringtones, music, pictires, software...etc)the way i want it. Can i just pop it in there and the EVO will automatically recognize everything?

That works except I would like to use my ringtones for email and text messages also.
Can this be done? I can't seem to do it. Am I doing something wrong ?

I don't think anyone answered you, but to get ringtones for notifications all you need to do is add a folder called notifications in that same audio folder. From there it works just like the ringtones.

How can I tell if my phone is root?

That usually depends on the root process you used. You could try to load a program that requires root like wi-fi tether, if it works then then I would say your rooted.

Well my guess is that if she has a Droid Eris she may not have Android 2.1 yet. Check her software version number. Menu/Settings/About Phone...should be in there somewhere if I remember right. I do know the OTA was released for the eris. You can make the phone check.

You can put media anywhere you like and your phone will detect it. The only thing that might not work well would be moving around files that are created by applications. Media files though organize to your hearts content.

Hiya fellow Evo owners. I hope everyone is enjoying their Evo as much as I am. I have one quick question and couldn't find any answers using the Search feature.

Does anyone know how to turn off/change the "green Android Robot" picture that pops up when you're trying to make a phone call?

HA this questions slipped by me!!! The way to change the Android pic is to assigned the person your calling a picture in your contacts. If the number is not from a contact then I am afraid you are stuck with the little green monster unless you root and someone builds a rom without him.

BTW - LOVING my new EVO. Wife loves it too. Phone Kicks ass.

I added a couple new folders to my home page but can't figure out how to name them, they just say folder. Is there a way to do this? I'm trying to make a folder for all my ebooks so they're all together in one folder.

Open the folder. Long press on the top of the folder window.
Rename.
Done.

Is there a way to remove some of the calls on the history list or just all of them?

Disregard, was reading elsewere on the forum and saw the long press on a couple of the applications so I figured I would try it, and voila a new window appears with more options. This phone and OS is amazing, I came from the Instinct and I just love the EVO.
Leaning new things every time I pick it up.

Welcome to the Android Family! Glad you figured it out and posted the resolution.

Great thread SirSlayer!

Another question I keep see popping up is how to change the default action for a contact and how to make a contact show up on the Favorites widge.

Basically to change any of this stuff you don't actually use the Favorites widget. You want to use the "People" application (which is the contact manager for Android)

If you want to make a contact show up in the "Favorites" widget do this:
1. Go into the People application and select your contact
2. Select the "Edit" function near the bottom of the page (might have to scroll down to see it)
3. Under the "Group" section select the Favorite group

If you want to change the default action that occurs when you select a contact from the Favorites widget:
1. Go into the People application and select your contact
2. Click on the Menu button near the bottom of your phone
3. Select the "More" option
4. Click on the "Set widget action"
5. Select whatever action you want.

Very nice. Thank You. I think soon I will compile all our answers in the first post. So to organize the thread. I have to do some work today so probably not today but soon.

Here's one that ought to be simple: When using a normal (two-contact, no microphone) set of earphones, how do I get the music app to send its sound to the earphones instead of the back speaker?

Hmmmm should play to the head set once its plugged in. I just plugged mine in and the music player played to the head phones by default. Maybe make sure they are pushed in all the way? I saw somewhere on here that someone had issues with it and just needed to push harder.

The Evo is my first Android phone. I have been playing around with it for a couple of days and really like the phone and Android.

I noticed on the upper left corner of the home screen is a little indicator that appears to show the status of downloads. Based on the status indicator, it appears I have a download cued up but it doesn't come (i.e. not getting the little check box when the download is actually completed).

Is there a way to check the status of downloads and cancel them if one is stuck for some reason?
