Some concerns before ordering

Im a research nut, so im pretty much sure i love the phone before i even order it.

My one existing concern is the call quality. There is a huge thread on the HTC forum about it, as well as many reviews on this forum, cnet reviews, many other spots.

What i don't get is how the phone is getting 4-5 stars on every rating site i see, if so many people are having an unacceptable issue.

Something about short words being cut off, calls possibly being dropped do to the phone not thinking it has a strong signal? Having to ask people to repeat themselves often.

The phone can enable me to walk on water, but without strong phone call qualities, the phone is useless to me.

I haven't seen any word of an update to fix or address these issues.

Please help me get to the bottom of this. I have 20 days to decide :(

For what it's worth, I believe many, many of us have not experienced ANY kind of problems with the call quality.

Speaking for myself, the call quality (from the earpiece to speakerphone to the actual signal itself) has been 100% consistently great. I truly have not experienced even 1 problem in the month that I've been using the device.

Perhaps there was a bad batch? Perhaps there are some parts of the country that don't have a strong signal? I am just guessing here because I'm always surprised to read about anyone experiencing this particular issue.

Long story short, my Incredible was fine for the first few weeks but then I did a factory reset to help another user determine the re-installation of paid apps. I knew how it worked on my Moto Droid but I wanted to make sure it worked the same on my Incredible to validate the advice I had given.

After that my call quality was completely borked. SO I booted to recovery and did a thorough wipe of data/cache twice, reinstalled everything and it has been crystal clear since then.

 remind me to never do that :D

Crystal clear call quality for me. 0 issues with the phone at all. Knock on wood. :)

Keep in mind most people use these forums for troubleshooting their phones. You typically will see more bad than good even if the majority of people have no problems.

I have noticed that my calls aren't always as smooth as my last phone (LG Env2). It's not really bad call quality, but sometimes (not too often) I have to ask the person to repeat what they said. It's also more of an issue when talking to AT&T people (which has pretty terrible coverage where I am), but it does happen with other Verizon people too. But it hasn't really been a problem for me. This phone has been great so far I've had it since launch day. I'd say my only real complaint is trying to look at my screen in the sun, but switching to a higher brightness level when I'm outside makes it a lot better. There are also some annoying features (like when you end a call it doesn't go back to the home screen), but there are usually apps to fix these things. Battery life is an issue but there are some good replacement batteries out there. Also wish there was voice dial for bluetooth but should come in 2.2...whenever that actually gets here. Screen size is perfect (EVO is too big IMO) and everything is very smooth. Overall great phone.

I cant believe im being told nobody has heard of this issue before?

Here is a thread with over 100 replies, most recent was yesterday:
Poor Signal/Reception - Major Issue - DROID INCREDIBLE by HTC (Verizon) - Android Forums - HTC Community

There are a ton of those types of posts. Saying people on the other end hear you fine, but you have to keep asking them what they just said.

And then there is the fact that the bars dont reflect the actual signal. Everyone blows it off saying to just go into the settings and look at the actual strength, but lets be honest, that should be accurate. Im wondering if the false reading on the display is contributing to the other falt im reading about; dropped calls.

Anyhow i am in love with the phone, dont take this as me bashing. Im trying to figure out exactly whats going on so i can convince my wife we are doing the right thing by ordering it.

Now wait just a damn minute, nobody here said we have never heard of the problem before. There are very extensive threads on it in the Incredible Support & Trouble Shooting section where they belong.

I went out of my way to tell my specific situation where I had this problem and my remedy for said situation.

If all your looking for is the list of people the have confirmed problems then by all means read through and post your question in the existing thread in the trouble shooting section.

I think it seems there are lots of call quality issues cause you will never find a person that gets a new phone and posts on a site about the good call quality. So the issues that do happen get glorified... surely valid issues but your always going to have issues with tech products, esp new one... just the luck of the draw? And chalk up another for not having any issue whatsoever with call quality/drops.

You will always hear complaints about something. People report on bad call quality if they experience it, they don't report on good quality if they have it. Check all the reviews online, almost all of them praise the Inc. for it's good call quality and as we have done in this thread as well.

Call quality is subjective and relates to the signal strength of the area you are in.

I would say go ahead with the order, I don't think you'll experience the problems you are talking about...

I just want to echo the previous sentiments, people don't come to the support forums to brag about the call quality, they cone here when they have a problem. I think on a whole the percent of call quality issues is small compared to the total units sold so far.

My advice to you, don't spend too much time reading in the support section, get one and see for yourself. If you do have a problem just exchange it. Oh and welcome to the forums. :)

Are you here to validate your fears and talk yourself out pf the phone or do you want to reassure yourself about your love for this phone? I, like the others who have posted, have had no issues regarding call quality or signal strength. It really depends on your signal from Verizon and if you are willing to give it a try, remember there is a 30 day trial, with a $35.00 restocking fee. But I personally believe that you'll love it as much as I do!

I have posted multiple times about call quality - particulary low volume at the earpiece - and almost returned the phone over this issue. I tried resets and a battery pull with no improvement. However, i did a second battery pull and call quality and volume magically improved. Can't explain it but I'm now very satisfied. Quality is clear over my car's bluetooth as well. I think, if anything, the sound at the earpiece might not be as not quite as dynamic as some phones though voice is clear, but I'm no longer having trouble understanding the other party. The speaker phone rocks on the Inc and I use it quite a bit.

My earlier complaints were legit and I've owned more cells than I count, but after reading many reviews and posts by users, call quality does not appear to be a widespread issue. Forums tend to magnify problems because those who are fat & happy don't tend to post as much.

Um, you have 30 days to return the phone. I have no reason to believe that you would have any of the issues other people are having but you never know. Worse comes to worst you buy the phone, you have issues, you return it. You never know until you try, and debating it isn't going to get you anywhere.

Just to clarify the restocking fee is only if you decide to try a different device all together or back out of the contact completely. If the phone is defective there is no fee to exchange.

My only reason for delving into this so far is because im already on a brand new Moto Droid, I have until 6/23 to pick up an Incredible.

Once i have the incredible, i cannot exchange for another phone .. in the event i am not happy for whatever reason.

Another small piece of my brain is still not over the horrible experience i had with the Storm1, which i read about rumors, but everyone said its just a batch issue ... i bought it, and ended up exchanging 4 of them before i finally just returned it :(

So i wanted to see if HTC was handling the issue any better/faster than RIM did back then.

But i see your point, if only 200-300 ppl are having an issue, and they sold 10's of thousands of them .. guess the odds are in my favor.

This makes so much more sense to me now. I sold my 7 month old Moto Droid to get the Incredible and am extremely happy with my decision. Your problem is going to be the waiting period for it to become in stock again. It is already back-ordered to 6/28 right now...

Is there anyway this process can be done at Bestbuy who has them in stock?

If i walk in there with my Droid, will they take them back because they are within the 30, or will they tell me to take them back where i bought them? (the vzw store)

I don't think BB is going to accept the return if it came from another store, but maybe somebody else can chime it? Couldn't hurt to just pop in and ask them ;)

Otherwise you should probably consider flat out returning the Moto Droid to the store you got it from, paying the $35 re-stocking fee and thus reseting your upgrade dates to the original dates. Then go to a Best Buy that has them in stock and upgrade there starting a new 30 day return window. That would seem to be the best option if you are upgrading existing lines.

If these lines are new service then its not so cut and dry, I believe you will not be able to resign for 6 months after canceling the service....

Here's the deal...It's a cell phone.
There will be some with problems there will some with none. A lot of things are involved in a cell call that could cause call problems. Every cell every made someone somewhere has had a problems with it. All you can do is try it and see how it works in your area. If it's bugged take it back.
