Root Gmail on phone not syncing with Gmail

Here is my issue. When I read or delete an email from my phone, it doesnt reflect in gmail when I login. It still shows as unread. Whenever I get new emails on the phone, it will say I have 5, but I only have 1 because I already read the other 4. But I cannot see them and can only view them then from gmail online.

Never had this issue live past a *228 and reboot. I have cleared cache, tried reflash. Everything. Even went back to a working NAND and still same issue. I am using Aloysius v11 MAPS.

Any thoughts?

what ROM are you on? I read where one didn't auto sync all the time. I'll look at xda and see which one it was.

I have this same issue with the Gmail Unread Count widget from marketplace. If I delete an email, it's not deleted when I log in on my computer, but if I only read it, it's marked as read when i log in on my computer. If I DO delete an email, then get another one, it will tell me 2 unread emails, but only show me one.

Don't know if you're using Gmail Unread Count as well, but I haven't been able to find a fix for it...

No, wasnt using that app. But I tried it to see if it would fix the issue but it didnt. Only way I was about to fix my issue was reflash and start fresh.

BUT, I used to have this issue and *228 op 2 and de-select sync of gmail and then re select it would usually fix the issue. Have yuo tried that?

I've tried checking/unchecking the sync gmail box, it fixes it for the moment, but as soon as I delete something and a new one comes in it will say 2 unread again. I don't want to have to keep checking/unchecking, obviously.

Haven't tried the *228, I'll see if it helps. Since the preferences for Gmail in 2.1 are different that 1.5 (I don't see any option to delete the emails from the gmail server when I delete from phone), I just figured it was a lost feature and this was the corresponding 'bug.'...

Well, gave the *228 a try - like the check/uncheck gmail sync it corrected it... until I deleted an email and received another one. Once again, I had 2 unread, but only 1 in the inbox.

Guess I'll just learn to deal with it.

Ya, I couldnt live with it. I wiped and after 3 reflashes, it now works like its supposed to. Maybe try wiping/reflashing and see if that works for you. But take a NAND first of course.

Occasionally I see that the unread count is wrong in the gmail app on the phone - it's been that way since 1.5 - and I just ignore it. And occasionally it takes a few minutes for read and unread status to populate from the phone to gmail online (though rarely the other way around - reading things on gmail online tends to be reflected on the phone pretty quickly.)

I am running WiFi most of the time - when I am on 3G, I rarely spend a lot of time with gmail, and I'm never near my computer when I am on 3G.

One thing that I have noticed is that after I Dalvik wipe and wipe data before a Nand restore, after starting up I have to manually resync with Ivan's, but then things are fine.

I run Ivan's mostly, and am on Senseless now. Gmail has been fine for both, with the exceptions I listed above.

I don't know if related or not but my sdcard got so fubared. Once I get my new one in I can see if it still happens. I think that might have been the cause

Why would the SD card have anything to do with Gmail? Not being an asshole just curious. I've had this problem as well; on many different ROMS

You not being an ass. And reason I think this is cuz my problem happens after I create a nand and switch neck to a nand. Then any nand old or new now had this issue. I know I prob wrong but I will find out after I get the new card and test my theory.

AHH Now I am not able to send any emails. The email just sits in the "Outgoing" Label that says "sending" in red. Has anyone found a fix for our Gmail woes, yet? I now have the problem on both my ROMS, what a PITA!!!!

That's exactly what happens with mine.. just started recently too. No idea what triggered it...

OK just turned my mobile network off for about a minute and turned it back on. I am now able to send messages and delete them (also deleted when I log-in via laptop).

Got me all excited, I tried this out a few times and it still didn't send my one-word test email...

I see your posts are an hour and a half apart... maybe it's just an issue of gmail sending VERY slowly or not syncing often enough? I've never let mine sit in the outbox for that long...I get pissed, delete it and pull out my macbook to write the damn email after about 5 minutes... ha.

Have you tried sending them connected to wi-fi and not the network? I assume you are in a 3G area?

No, but honestly the only place I spend time that has wireless is my house, where I'd just use my internet anyway.

Tried sending a test email last night, went to sleep, and when I woke up it was still sending.

I just tried going back to an old nand backup from about3 weeks ago when it was still working... no luck there either though.

So now that I have time to post this, let me say how I was able to fix this issue but another issue came up.

So after I wasnt able to send email or have it sync properly with GMAIL, I did *228 op 2. Did this 2 times. Dont ask why, just did. After that, I tried to send email, still sat in sending screen. Pulled battery and after it restarted it still said sending. I cancelled it and sent another email, and it worked! Gmail sync was working properly too. But soon after this, Market broke for me. I couldnt download anything. I would be notified of updates and could search the Market but it would never download. So I ended up reflashing again.

Hope this may help some of you and maybe you dont get the Market break. Let me know.

Before any of you folks re-flash, there is something else you might try.

Run DDMS (Dalvik Debug Monitor SomethingOrOther) - start it from the command prompt just like you would "adb", select your phone (click on the HT9.... string), and set it into verbose mode (click the little "V" inside the circle). Then run your sending experiment, and see if any Errors are occurring in the log messages. (You can post up a short excerpt here between [ CODE ] and [ /CODE ] tags so they are easier to read/scroll).

Sometimes the data store that backs up Gmail gets corrupted. Clearing it from the Applications menu *might* work.

Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> Gmail Storage -> Clear Data

I would poke through the DDMS log first though, looking through areas that have error (E) messages logged - sometimes it is obvious what Activity on the phone is experiencing the problem (and sometimes not).

erisuser, I can't thank you enough. I just did the data clear (DDMS was too much for me to handle right now). Not only can I send emails now, but when I delete them on my phone, they're deleted on my computer too.

I wasn't entirely sure that was the problem when I posted that (and am still not sure that folks with a common symptom all have the same underlying cause), but I am glad it worked for you.

PS logcat would have worked as well e.g.

Code:
C:\foo> adb shell
# logcat > /sdcard/logcat_output.txt

[COLOR=grey]... then do the thing that is buggy ... [/COLOR]

^C
# exit
C:\foo> adb pull /sdcard/logcat_output.txt logcat_output.txt
