Sold more than any other phone....

Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S), the third U.S. wireless carrier, reported that its 4G phone, the HTC EVO 4G, provided record sales figures for the company stores around the country. The company reported temporary shortages at many of its 22,000 sales locations, including Sprint retail stores, national retail partners. FBR Capital confirmed the shortages through its channel checks, they estimate total HTC EVO 4G device sales of 320,000 on June 4th; 100,000 gross additions and 220,000 upgrades from existing Sprint customers; initial sales volume was significantly higher than expected. Sprint’ s new 4G-phone launch was ahead of Apple’s iPhone launch today, which has positive implications for gross postpaid additions, churn and net postpaid additions. Sprint shares jumped close to 3% in early pre-market trading.

I talked with the guy at my local Sprint store. Here in New England he said there were 200k units available on Friday, when I bought mine on Saturday the only reason they had any left was due to the network issue on Friday and they couldnt process any transactions. They were to receive a couple hundred Saturday afternoon. When I went back yesterday to port my number they were completely sold out. I wonder if sales were close to a million units?

Good news for Sprint, especially since they didn't even really advertise the phone. I've talked to a lot of people who left other carriers for the phone. It might have helped Sprint stop the bleeding.

The sales should really take off when advertising starts.

It also allows other companies to see what they can do on Sprint, and we won't have to keep playing fourth banana. Palm tried to allude that it was Sprint that was the problem, when it was really good software, with a very bad exterior that turned people off.

3x more EVOs sold on launch day than the Pre and Instinct in the first three days...that's impressive. I know my Sprint store had over 200 EVOs in stock for launch.

Same here. There were people lined up in the morning, but I went in at 11am and they had some left. They were sold out by the end of the day, though. I'm glad they were prepared for the high demand. Kudos to Sprint for that!

Palm's initial advertising campaign was terrible. It certainly did nothing for their image or their sales to feature a creepy girl in their Pre commercials. The biggest negative for me on the Pre was the poor build quality. The hardware was flimsy and it seemed as if Palm was too anxious to release a phone that wasn't quite ready yet.

If you'll remember Palm promised the Pre in the first half of the year. I agree they rushed it to make that date. People should take the Blizzard approach. Release a product when it's ready, not when you think it'll be ready. I know that upsets folks, but putting out a poor quality item pisses them off more. Every time.

Or worse yet...having to issue a recall because of poor QC and planning.

HTC EVO 4G sets new sales records for Sprint - Google 24/7 - Fortune Tech

Friday sales of HTC EVO 4G marked the largest quantity of a single phone sold in one day ever for Sprint - the record was previously held by both Samsung InstinctTM and Palm PreTM. In addition, the total number of HTC EVO 4G devices sold on launch day was three times the number of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre devices sold over their first three days on the market combined.

So, take the two previous record holders, tally up both of their sales for their first three days. The EVO sold three times that total in just one day. Estimates weree for 50,000 to 100,000 Pres at launch so that would put EVO somewhere between 300,000 and 600,000 units.
There is no other way to slice it: The EVO is off to a very successful start, even at untraditional venues.

Along with some activation server overloads, Sprint also said that it had sold out of stock at many of its 22,000 locations including RadioShack, Best Buy, and Walmart, but was replenishing supplies daily. They also seemed to indicate that they were upping their orders from HTC.
It will be interesting to see how the EVO does after Apple CEO Steve Jobs launches the fourth generation iPhone later today at WWDC.
