dust behind screen

I have just noticed that there is a lot of dust under the screen on my phone, ive had it about 10 days now and it lives either in my pocket or on the desk.

Has anyone else had this on the desire yet? Should I try to take off the glass front or try to use the one months free insurance (which is probably worthless) that Vodafone made me have?

Are there any other options?

as expected, the insurance didnt want to know anything about this problem so I cancelled that contract.

mobiles.co.uk told me to take the phone to any carphone warehouse store, so I did and they told me they wouldnt help!

back in touch with mobiles.co.uk and they are arranging an exchange phone which is good but will mean im without a phone for 3 days.

HTC would've/should've replaced the phone as its got a years warrenty.

Good good, can confirm theres no dust under mine and i've had it since it was released

Just ordered a case for it too, so hopefully that should help prevent the dust next time.

None on mine, and mine lives in my pocket too.

Didint the N1 owners decide dust entry on the N1 was via the ear speaker? HTC claimed to resove this, so should have for the Desire.

Just a quick question for Lekky and the other people who don't have any dust under their screen.

Have you scrutinised your screen under direct sunlight with the phone either switched off or in standby mode?

I have only found one spec of dust under my screen when i turn my screen off in direct sunlight. Does not really bother me as I hardly ever notice apart from what I already explained above.

Yeh I only noticed my half a dozen specs today in very direct sunlight coming through the window ... completely invisible in normal light though, but alas still there in my 2 day old desire that's lived in a case. Fairly likely it's been there since manufacture imo.

"Dear ******, Thank you for contacting us. In regards to your enquiry, I can help you with that. The device shouldn't have any dust under the screen and also should be sealed. We would advise you to bring the phone back to the shop or you could book the phone for a repair calling at the number: +44-845-890-0079 Mon - Sat 09:00- 18:00 Sat 09:00- 13:00 The repair takes normally from 3 to 14 working days depends on the device model. I trust that this resolves your query, please do not hesitate to contact us again if required. Thank you for contacting HTC. Best regards, HTC"

I then phoned Carphone Warehouse and explained the problem. They said bring it back in and they will swap it. I am also going to take the e-mail as evidence. I'm going to be a pain and ask to have a good look in the shop before I walk out.

It seems silly to worry about dust, but I worry that more and more will appear as the days go on... this will be my third Desire... my first one had 3 dead pixels :s !!!

I have a courier coming to my house tomorrow to perform a doorstep exchange. Hopefully my new Desire will be dust free. I am dreading opening it up and finding that it has even more dust under the screen than my previous handset!

Not good news I'm afraid. Carphone Warehouse were happy to swap it over... but I had a look at the new one first and it had even more dust under the screen - BIG dust rather than my very small particles. In the end I told them I'd stick with mine as it is far less noticeable. Looks like it gets in during the manufacturing process. Hopefully that means it isn't going to get worse though..

As you mentioned, it seems it gets in during the manufacturing process and before the screen is sealed - if it's sealed at all? If it's sealed, one would assume that no more dust will get in? That's a good point actually. Does anybody know if the screen is sealed or not?

It looks as though I'm going to have to look a total plonker tomorrow and ask the fella if I can have a look at the new handset before deciding what to do!

He's going to think I'm a complete nutter as I start unpacking the phone and holding it up to the sun etc!

I'm terrible for spotting faults on things - the missus has already told me that I have the job of inspecting her Desire when she gets it next month!

I went shopping with her today and got a few strange looks. I was going into mobile phone shops who had a Desire out for potential customers to play with. I was wiping the screen totally clean on my polo shirt before looking for specs of dust under the screen!

I could sense the shop staff looking at me thinking I was a very interested customer. Their face was then a picture of confusion as I pulled out my own Desire and started comparing that in the same light!

One thing I did notice on the Desire in (I think) an O2 shop was very thin lines of what the missus described as "lines of diamonds" when the phone was in sleep/standby mode.

So my Sunday afteroon was spent rubbing HTC Desires in mobile phone shops and comparing them with my own. I'm not that sad really! Honest!

Yeah, you can see them all over the screen. Which in a way makes worrying about dust kinda silly as, in some cases, these are more noticeable.

Chees for clearing that up chaps.

It's strange, but I haven't noticed them on my own Desire or any of the other Desires I have fiddled with. I noticed them for the first time on the Desire in the O2 shop.

Does something cause them to become more visible?

Usually more visible under strong light ,ie in photo`s ,bright sunlight.
Dont know if its an Amoled thing ,but they were not visible at all on my old Omnia,but that was resistive

I still haven't had it replaced!

I waited in all day (between 8am and 6pm) to do the exchange as planned. It got to about 4:30pm and I called T-Mobile to see what was going on. I was given a tracking number and told to track my phone on the UPS website. The tracking number I was given didn't register, so I called T-Mobile back. After a bit of investigation their end it turns out that the phone is currently with UPS, but as it was put through after 5pm on Friday, it wasn't eligible for delivery until tomorrow - Tuesday!

It seems the person I spoke to on Friday (despite being very helpful) gave me the wrong information or couldn't tell the time!

I've been guaranteed delivery of my replacement phone tomorrow, so hopefully I'll have more luck then! The way today went though, I wouldn't be surpised if I receive a handset with half of the Sahara Desert under the screen!

I've now got a new Desire and it also has dust under the screen.

I'm not sure what to do now, as I really like the phone.

I may go down to the T-Mobile shop and inspect some handsets.
