How is this phone not rooted yet?

Paladin mode activate!

Be patient. Root is being worked on. Most of the roots had some insider help, the incredible is all on its own for the time being.

Also nobody owes you root. You aren't paying for it. I hate to sound all nerdrage but thats the general feeling I had from your post. Forgive me if I am wrong. It just seems that the majority feels its their right.

I understand no one "owes me root" but you would think that with the hype around this device and the fact that the EVO and Streak were rooted prior to being released there would be something out there. I wonder why no "inside help" with this device?

I was wondering this myself, especially with the EVO being rooted right away. They have very similar OSes, right? I mean I know it's all Android, but the Inc and the EVO are very similar.

My understanding is the EVO has/had a fairly large security hole/bug in its rom which allowed for the quick root.

I also understand that a OTA, fixed the hole. I haven't heard of anyone that has rooted a phone that has received the OTA.

update: I checked the EVO forums, the update did indeed fixed the ability to root the phone. So if you buy one don't let it update if you want to root.

IMO the Evo is a higher priority device for HTC hence the "inside support" mentioned earlier. I know it's up to the carrier to hype their phones but it seems that Sprint really beat out the Inc by talking about it earlier and then HTC really backed them by having it at trade shows before there was even a mentioned of the Incredible (a real mention not just speculation). Maybe I am wrong but I just feel the Incredible is being seen as the little brother to the EVO since it's smaller and has less hype.

I'm fairly certain even with the OTA update the Evo can still be rooted. I have seen that it just takes more effort and you have to do it some other way.

The Evo was released to developers' at some Google event before it was released to the public so they had tons of time to play with it.

The Evo was given away for free at Google I/O to all attendees; and considering you have some of the most talented devs all packed in one room with the device, well, you do the math. You can't compare Evo root access to ours because the Incredible wasn't handed out to devs free of charge. Even the guy that "supposedly" is making very good progress on root had to have one given to him by another person because he couldn't afford one at the time. The Eris was just as difficult to root so this comes as no surprise that the Incredible is taking so long. I feel that, unless you are working on root yourself, that you need to just chill out, be patient, and let people do their thing. Most devs have real full time jobs and typically do these things as hobbies.

I wouldn't worry about the phone getting rooted, every Android phone has been rooted. The Incredible will be rooted as well, until then don't install leaked updates (Big Root problem the Eris had as soon as people downloaded the leak the original was rooted and all the leakers were SOL including this guy lol) and enjoy your Incredibly Fantastic phone

Don't ask about root, it's being worked on. Just subscribe to the Root Notification thread. Then you will be notified when root is obtained. I'm sure the devs who are working on this are just so thrilled that you are wondering why they didn't root it yet.
If the developers are such total crybabies about someone asking whether or not the phone is rooted, then screw it, I don't even want it.

Is there anywhere that says from a TECHNICAL perspective what's preventing root from happening versus the EVO or other devices?

I'm not impatient in the slightest, nor am I wanting to pressure the people working on it. I'm just curious because it IS such an anomaly.

This is from a thread on XDA. It highlights what has been done and what will not work. link to the thread ----> Possible ways to Root Droid Incredible - xda-developers

Hopefully this answers some of you questions. I would love to know what is going on but, ever since the fiasco that took place over Memorial Day weekend, I don't think anyone wants to post about root until root is achieved. It's a shame that a few morons had to ruin it for the rest.

Possible ways to Root Droid Incredible Basically this is for organization and for people to understand and help contribute to our root attempts

The Thread should discuss the ideas to gain root and why they won't work or what the status is. Also if you have a question of will this help us gain root, then post it or PM me and we can discuss it on IRC or in here and then come to a conclusion if it will help or not.

In no way am I a dev or understand how all this works completely but I would like to help and if this is a way I can, great and trying out new things.

Ideas

1) Newer Kernel Exploits
Status: ???

2) Zip File Fuzzing (Bootloader overflow)
Status: ???

3) Root Level things running
Status: ???

4) Mount internal storage and modify OS
Status: ???

5) Trick from the Desire
Status: We need a signed ROM from HTC to get that to work.

6) Let's put an image on the SD and see if it will boot that
Status: No. It doesn't work

7) Trick from the Evo
Status: No. The Evo depends on some specific stuff that Incredible doesn't have.

8) Fastboot oem unlock
Status: Everyone and their mom tried, doesn't work

9) Flash a new image
Status: No, you and what root?

10)Shoryuken ptrace() exploit.
Status: No. It's been patched.
