New Owner, 1st Smartphone

Alright, here is goes. Just ordered my 1st smartphone from Verizion (work Discounts), got the Droid Eris, and should be here tomorrow. I have looked around, and i seems i may have some updates to make to it, unless it will come updated. If anyone can clairify that would be great. the 2.1 update or V2/V3?

If i do need to update, What all should i look for, Will it just prompt me to? should i download anything? Im not stupid when it comes to technology, just tryin to get an idea how to maximize my phone for whats it capable of.

Any Hints/Tips, Do'Dont's, whould be appreciated. Thanks in Advance!

WELCOME! We are like a family and will definately help you out!
The 2.1 update will prompt your device at boot if it is not already installed. Once you click on it it will start the download and install automatically. Get ADW launcher must faster than sense and more customizable :D

Right now the market is messed up, been messed up for a few days, and it is not showing up as of today. Just download the newest version from here:
ADW Things
Just make sure you download from the phone's browser and you're all set

Welcome to the forum, Android and smartphones in general.

As already stated, the update should already be loaded or prompt you to install shortly after you boot up the phone the first time.

Here are a few threads to look at to get you started on the path of Android enlightenment:

http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/53708-everything-you-need-know-about-your-htc-eris.html

http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/68845-must-have-apps.html

Also, not to contradict surgeon0214 in any way (I also think ADW is pretty nice), but I would suggest running your phone stock for a little bit before you start changing things. This is good for finding bugs as well as just getting a good overall feel for the phone. Once you start to find things that you don't like or wish to improve upon, then you can start tweaking the phone as much as you want. That doesn't mean avoid installing apps of any kind, I would just avoid the things that will replace stock items for the time being.

First off, I love your username. Wouldn't be any reference to Avenged Sevenfold, now, would it? =]

Second, the Eris is a great choice for a first smartphone. This is my first smartphone and I love it. You will enjoy this phone, provided you don't run into a major bug. But chances are if it's brand new, you probably won't see any bugs.

Don't listen to too much Tiger Army, but they aren't bad. I like their older stuff the most, but mostly because they sound a lot like old AFI =]

And I like the direction their new single is going. Reminds me a lot of City of Evil... let's just go back a few more albums, right? Lol.

Davey from AFI is on alot of the songs from Tiger Army's 1st two albums. And vise verse with Nick 13 on older AFI songs.

YA, Sounding the 7th trumpet FTW!

Well i get the new phone today as soon as Fed Ex gets here. "slackers" Ups is way better. Excited to play with it and learn some stuff.

So after getting used to it a bit my plan is to get the following Apps, let me know if im in the right direction

Astro file manager
Lookout Mobile Secuirty or similar app
Waze (maybe)
Pandora
facebook
Battery left widget??? /vizbattery widget
Handcent then maybe Swype
beautiful widgets or fancy widgets
Shopsavvy/barcode scanner
Movies by flixstar
Something MLB (i need it)!!!!! Anything for Yahoo fantasy baseball
And ADW Launcher eventually.

Should i get a new browser like dolphin or somethin?

Is there anyothers i really should get or anything to maximize the phone batterylife, or what not. i have been doing a ton of research on here, and feel i should have a good head start. Thanks to you guys.

And i should wait to download any untill 2.1 installs if it does not come with it already correct?

Thanks again to all.

I personally don't think you need any sort of mobile security.

Waze is ok, but I have a problem with duplicate apps that don't really improve on stock apps ie Google Nav.

You can download both swype and handcent.Swype is just a keyboard while handcent is a messaging app.

I have never tried battery left widget, but be careful of downloading too many widgets as they will destroy your battery life.

If you plan to run a different launcher then Beautiful widgets would be my #1 recommendation. They have the best clock and weather widgets out there!

MLB at bat is out there for that, but its pricey, not sure if there are any free or atleast cheaper apps out there.

Ok so there is a stock GPS, good to know, ill stick with that. Ill just get handcent and see if i need a new keyboard.

So ADW Launcher and Beautiful Widgets are both launchers? Did not know that. Both are Free.

Ill have to check around for MLB stuff, but I have been reading at bat is worth the $

Lol grammar fail. There should be a comma in there between laucher and then. No beautiful widgets is a Clock/weather widget (along with some other toggles, but the android power control widget is better) ADW is a home replacement or "Launcher" it overlays the OS and adds some customizations and functionality. ADW is also free, but Beautiful widgets is not. Its 1.50 but IMO worth it if you run a home replacement app like ADW or LaucherPro because they don't come with Clock/weather widgets.

Ok, i got ya, So should i get the ADW before the beautiful widgets, or does it matter. $1.50 is not bad if its worth it.

So that Android power control, Does that have a clock/weather, or just gives you ability to control what is being used while phone is running, and help with battery life and speed? Would if be wise to get both?

And i have grammer fails all the time.

It doesnt matter what you get first, and fancy widget is free and just as good as beautiful widgets.

And the power control doesn't have a clock.
