The new iPhone

I do not by any means like apple.. However, I am not sure what to think of the new iphone..

Believe it or not my first reaction to any device is to give it as fair of a chance as possible. (For example.. the idea of a "tablet" computing device is still one I personally dislike and will avoid.. be it any other device or an apple device)

however, I'm not sure what to think about the new iphone.. Glass on both sides? While that does have potiental.. (Apple may be able to pull a backtrack like the backflip type thing).. I worry about what will happen if the phone is dropped..

I am impressed apple stuck the same processor as the iPad into the iPhone.. In terms of speed that is probably going to be mind boggling.. However It leaves me to question if it will affect ipad sales... It does leave me to question why go for an ipad.. when the new iphone has the same processor.. and sure the ipad is much bigger.. however.. my biggest problem with smaller devices in the past has been the fact they felt much slower than regular sized computers.. Even the snapdragon satisfies me personally there from my experiences so far.. However, people will be happy to have the faster product anyway and I don't begrudge them for that.

All of you by now surely know of my distaste for apple.. and I must admit it is impressive to some degree.

Apple knows what it is doing in terms of getting customers.. and if it is true about the sensors being the same size as in the 3 mp camra.. They deserve their kudo's for creating a higher quality camra..

However, I have to look at something else.. Apple iphone has had what is arguably (please don't argue it.. there is another thread for that) the best user experience for ap hone.. However, it has trailed behind somewhat in terms of hardware..

So while it does seem like an impressive device, I am wondering if in some ways it should have been more. There are people who don't care for the current iphone os and while it is unknown what feature's or how the user experience is going to be handled on the newest iphone.. Is it going to address any of the concerns of the people who don't care for apple but, aren't pro android or win mo or symbian..

I think the question as it is now.. is who is going to do the most with their hardware..

Now one thing I AM very interested in is if it is possible to squeeze more out of the snap dragon.. This could very quickly become an AMD vs INTEL war for those of you who know more about cpu's. Can android up the performance of the snap dragon? or is it already running at max efficiency?

I am also interested in the comment about how many pixles the human eye can perceive.. I find it amazing I haven't heard more about that from monitor manufacturers.

One major issue for me also is I wonder if this phone is really a "game changer".. Sure the first iphone was impressive.. but, it changed the market... Many phone's up'd the ante on the iphone's over time.. but, none of them have ever really been as sought after as the iphone.. Anyone who sells phone's on any carrier has probably been asked about the iphone at least once on many different occasions by different people..

And it is true that for a while.. no phones really touched it as far as what people want.. However, now.. Iphone has been out for a while... these things are impressive.. But, I think it is dangerous to say it is "as impressive as the first iphone".. And with that said.. My personal interest still sway me more towards open source for many reasons.. (I toy around with linux time to time since before I even heard about android or maemo) and now.. I must admit not much has changed..

I am wondering if this will be enough to convince people who were on the edge..

The phone looks pretty feature-packed, but I think this phone is gonna MURDER AT&T's 3g network, which is already strained by existing iphone traffic.

Average consumers don't buy Apple stuff based on processors. The people that are going to buy a iPad won't be faze by an iPhone. (Most of those people already have an iPhone, anyways)

Apple stated that they "made" a glass that's 30% "stronger". I'm most interested if it will conduct and dissipate heat better than the current plastic-type backs

Rooted Nexus1's have documented faster processor speeds, but by pushing processors to the max, you lose battery and increase internal heat. I like to see a phone limit a processor cap, but let devs code in a "supercharger" mode where ex:video can use a bit more for a short amount of time.

Videochat...I don't know about any of you, but if I'm talking to you, I really don't want to look at you. Those youngsters in relationships may feel differently about it than me. This WILL revolutionize phone sex.

The iPhone 4 is not enough to make me update hardware yet, even if I were a iPhone user. The biggest thing for me is software. My old iPhone 3GS is currently jail broken and I just may throw my SIM back into the iPhone for a few day after I get iOS 4 simply to check out multitasking "done right"...

I honestly wasn't too impressed with it. Instead of it being a giant leap forward, they seem content with making little steps toward making it better. While the camera's pictures look nice, I prefer the Evo still to the iPhone 4. The new iPhone looks a bit like a Zune HD, imo.

Remember, video chat on the Evo is possible using 3G, 4G and WiFi, not just WiFi.

I HONESTLY was expecting to be jealous of iPhone 4 users, but after seeing the keynote... I am not one bit. I was expecting to see a whole bunch of new features and blown away, especially with that email reply that Apple had. Nope. Nothing.

I just left an iPhone 3GS for the EVO... I was very interested in the iPhone 4 just to see what it offered....

I am not that impressed... The same old iPhone in a different skin with a few tweaks..

Facetime is laughable.... iPhone to iPhone only and both must be on wifi....

Glass front and rear? BIG mistake...

Multi-tasking is OK...

The screen looks gorgeous...

A4 processor looks nice and I am sure the iPhone will be snappy...

iMovie cost 4 bucks in the app store... Come on now Apple.... It should be free...

I dunno. I've always hated on the iPhone ever since it came out, and have been talking a lot of trash since I got my Incredible. Now I may have to shut my mouth. I have to say I'm impressed with some of the features.

The screen resolution is so fine it's nearly impossible for the human eye to distinguish individual pixels.

Full 720p HD video recording.

A gyroscope, not just an accelerometer.

Plus, the price is amazing. $199 for a 16GB and $299 for a 32GB.

Now the average user still can't open it up and put a micro SD card in it or change the battery (two of the main selling points of an Android phone for me).

Plus, you have to use that virus called iTunes to sync it with your computer.

But if Verizon ends up carrying the iPhone (the other selling point; I loathe AT&T), then my Incredible is going to seem outdone pretty quickly.

I didn't mean literally overclock it.. I just meant that updates could get more performance out of the existing power.. The best example I can give is this.. In a car.. it doesn't matter HOW powerful the engine.. if the tires don't give good traction... power is wasted.. So. I don't mean make the engine more powerfull I mean make it over all more efficient. I have heard froyo may be a different ball game in terms of speed but, it is still open in the air.

And I am aware current apple uses aren't too worried about the hardware.. But, Now I really feel like the two devices have become much more similar..

Same processor.. expandable memory and able to connect to the web.. and with the new claim on battery life.. I would be hard pressed to be worried about an ipad when I bring a phone with me everywhere I go anyway.. but, I suppose apple's marketing will worry about the details.

After playing with the evo.. even if iphone is faster.. I feel like the n1 is more of an individual computing device.. and most of what I've seen from iphone makes it more like an extension of the power you already have.. So unless that changes.. I am not too worried.. I still feel fine paying for n1.. now with that said.. Don't flame me if you disagree.. It is an opinon.. and it is one shared by Anandtech..

The best example I can give is this.. You sell a ps3 to a 10 year old by letting him play games.. later on when the parents want to watch blu ray you sell them the remote..

Even if the remote was released at the same time making the analogy a bit different... the point is apple users feel better about it.

I do not like that idea but, it works.

Looks like the only players now are Samsung Galaxy S, Motorola Shadow and iPhone4.

As much as I like my incredible, I think I am going to trade it in for a Motorola Shadow and get the iPhone4. I'll have both of the best.
HTC needs to step up the game in their next phones...

16bit color on N1,Evo,and DINC? AMOLED isnt hot when I see gradient color dithering. Inability to play high bitrate 720p 30fps or record H.264 30fps video?
I love choices and this will make HTC compete a little harder.

For me the game changer will be the video recording/playback. All my home videos are h.264 720p straight from my dSLR. NO need for conversions. Itll be a straight synch like I have it now on the Ipad.
I also have 3,000 photos (60 different photo albums) and there is nothing in town to manage that compared to iPhoto/iPhone. ( Unless something can prove me otherwise- Convert 3,000 20 meg RAW files each, organize in sequence,re-order, and optimze for the phone). I also want to see the photos in the highest bit-rate color-depth.

As us tech geeks like to gloat over specs,I want a phone I can handle to my parents and they can see edit HQ videos (straight from their Canon 720p camera), and view high quality slideshows of their grand kids.

I also want a phone I can put in my car's hidden arm-rest and have the steering wheel control the music and navigate thru my car's built in NAV screen. Unless Audi, Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, Land Rover make HTC Android incar controllers, iPhone wins here.


Don't get me wrong, I'm still in Android camp. I'll keep on upgrading my Android phone (as work permits) but I'll be using the iPhone on a day-to-day basis. Also, I consider $299 dirt cheap.

Many auto makes allow connection through bluetooth/usb, operate like Fords Sync, or come with a HDD for you to store the music. I prefer this approach to Apple device-specific connectors, since it allows a broader range of devices to utilize the NAV/steering wheel controls for input.

Sounds like you've already left. You're still in the Android camp but are going to use the iPhone on a day-to-day basis and only upgrade your Android phone because of work?

Video calling has a long way to go. I believe that Android phones with a deal with Skype or something would do wonders. People already know Skype, use Skype, and the brand name is enough. Google should jump on this!

I was truly excited for the iPhone 4, between the Verizon rumors and the dual cameras and many other things I thought they had a chance to compete. They will compete I believe, but they should not. The system is still closed. Jobs still rules the whole thing. Video calling would be cool, but iPhone to iPhone no thanks. I believe that if someone made a deal with skype for video chatting phone to pc or phone to phone that would be cool. The screen is nice, but the double sided glass seems like a very poor call to me. Twice the surface area to crack easily. It'll sell. but I know for one I will not buy it, and I probably would not if it were offered up on verizon.

$299 is dirt cheap but you would get yourself locked into a 2-year contract with AT&T.

Wait til HTC makes a phone utilizing the dual core Scorpion processor. HTC has been a major player for many years now in the smartphone industry and will continue to be. Yes the iPhone4/Shadow/GalaxyS look good but HTC will respond.
