Where the wild things are
Well I recently installed Nexfro. I like it a lot. No complaints Fabulous did a great job. However the 2.2 messaging app. I can't stand it and I loved the 2.1 messaging app(enough to just go back to 2.1 if I can't get it) so I was wondering if anyone could give me the .apk file so I could manually install it on my droid. Please and thanks :D. I'd do this myself, but I don't know how.

Eh, I noticed that to, but I bet if you really want it, you could flash back to a 2.1 rom, use root explorer and navigate to system apps, copy the messaging apk to the root of your SD card, then flash back to 2.2, and as before, use root explorer to navigate to system apps, delete the 2.2 messaging apk, then navigate back to the root of your SD card and install the 2.1 apk.
Now, I'm not sure if this will work, so make sure you backup before you do it.. If anyone else knows a way, chime in.. But in theory, this should work..
Hope this helped.

The issue is whether a 2.1 app will work in 2.2.

Previously, ROM devs were able to 'slipstream' (for lack of a better word) 2.0/2.0.1 apps into the 2.1 builds they were building from AOSP - I cannot say one way or another if there was any work involved or if the regular (non-developer) user could do this on his own - but 2.0 --> 2.1, to me, seems to be a smaller change than 2.1 --> 2.2.

Still, there may be backward compatibility after all - we just do not know.

Yet.

I tried to install the 2.1 messaging app on 2.2 and it didn't work... It loaded and I could send an receive texts, however every time it was done sending the text it would FC and I would have to reopen it...

I loved the look of the CM 2.1 messaging app and I'm sure someone will get on out there soon, in the mean time I might be going back to handcent... :)

Why not just get something like Handcent?

Because with 150+ apps already installed, and with Handcent still occasionally FCing when I am using it, and with it having so many features that I simply do not use....

and with CM (and perhaps Pete, too) I had a themed SMS app b/c the entire ROM was themed....

I'm just picky like that. The only functionality I wanted from Handcent was popup notification - and I not get that via SMS Popup - and both are a lot less resource intensive than Handcent is.

Yes yes booty texts can be anoy.... ummmm...

Yea I know what your saying... :p

Actually, you're not far from the truth :p

I tried to install the 2.1 apk to replace the 2.2 apk and couldn't even get it to install, could probably push it, but there ain't any point now since someone said they got it installed and it wouldn't work right.. But, you never know, some smart dev may have liked the 2.1 mms apk better and decide to add it info their rom.

I'm not sure if this will help, since I'm running on a 2.1.

Some guys edited the "compose_message_activity.xml" and "compose_message_activity_black.xml" files insde the \res\layout folder of the mms.apk file.

Instead of the "black over white" and "black over cyan" conversation colors, the modded apk allows you to toggle between the day and night modes. You can also change the font size.

Not sure if link posting is allowed, but here it is:
