Extreme vs. Incredible

Well, from the pictures, it seems there is some kind of overlay. What I'm truly curious about is how the Extreme has a better benchmark test than the Nexus One and Galaxy S. Doesn't make a lot of sense, unless the Ninja Blur really speeds it up that much. Not getting how an OMAP 3630 can beat an OMAP 3640.

It makes sense that it outruns the Nexus One, the Galaxy S is a bit funnier but several things could be behind that: TouchWiz is more of a resource hog than Motoblur maybe?

And yeah, the Moto Droid had gorilla glass in it, so on that note, it will probably be more durable than the DInc screen.

Also, apparently you can turn off Motoblur (turning off the skin at least and keeping it's beneficial services) whereas you cannot turn of HTC Sense on the Inc sans root. You can turn off Sense on the Evo tho (don't quote me on this though) so maybe that'll be fixed. A lot of people prefer stock android so at least Motorola gives you the option to aesthetically run stock. I hear rumors of the original Droid getting 2.2 soon too while the DInc remains up in the air.

I think the build and some of the extra's like HDMI out and 720p video recording will make it hot! The only thing I lack in knowledge about and wonder about, is the comparison between the OMAP 3630 720MHz processor & the incredibles 1ghz Snapdragon processor. I've had the Moto Droid, Eris and Incredible and if it wasn't for the weird, cheap build of the Incredible and lack of HDMI/video, I would probably still own it(Sold). The speed and reliability was incredible compared to the Eris and Moto. Is this OMAP 3630 going to be clocked higher or somehow be faster than the 1ghz snapdragon? I have a need for speed!

Except that the DI has Gorilla Glass too.

I wondered if it did, but where did you hear that? When I had a DI, it seemed fairly resistant as it was always loose in my pocket with other junk and no scratches occured. I was always worried though...

I remember reading about the DI having resolution issues compared to the Moto Droid and I can confirm that the DI screen was terrible outside in the sun!

Another tid bit comparrison: When I had the Moto Droid, my call quality and clarity was awesome, best phone ever in that regard! The Eris and Incredible are sub-par in my opinion, they seem to have issues with background noise and volume leveling. The Moto Droid was always crisp and clear with perfect volume leveling, so I'm banking that the Extreme will share the same qualities! Did the Moto Droid have a noise canceling mic maybe?

I think first I need to state that I am not trying to patronize or belittle you.
But when people who do not understand throw out buzzwords like Snapdragon, 1Ghz , Amoled people buy into that junk way too much.
Let me start buy saying that Snapdragon is a very powerful processor but it has been around for quite sometime (I am talking about the 1st gen snapdragon). Its problem is with its relatively weak Graphics core compared to A4. Although I am not an expert on mobile processors but you cannot compare two different architectures solely based on their "Clock Speed".
Therefore it is to hard to fully conclude whether OMAP 3630 is going to be faster than 1st gen snapdragon. But as seen in OMAP 3630 vs 3430, there is huge difference b/w the two. Based on that we can deduced that 3630 will PROBABLY faster(this is a subjective term) than 1st gen snapdragon.

Side Note: I just hate what android crowds are turning into.
We should not turn into
1. "wow this phone has 100MP camera vs 10MP in iphone", although it actual picture quality is worse
2. "Super AMOLED, hell yeah" another buzzword, IPS used in iphone is very high quality as well
3. "iphone sucks no matter what" ok if they sucked so bad why are they doing so well it can't just be all marketing.

BTW, I hate Steve Jobs and they way Apple does business but if we don't focus on what's more important we will lose.
Sorry for the long rant.

Here's where I found out about the Gorilla Glass. I preferred my Droid's screen to the Incredible because it uses that pentacel extrapolation, so you don't actually get 800x480. I would imaging the iPhone 4 screen is phenominal, just wish it was larger. I am not a fan of oled screens. If Moto or HTC would release a phone with a 4" or larger screen and up the resolution to something with a ppi resolution of 300 and a front facing camera, I think it would blow all of Apple's endevours out of the water.

You're cool with me. I think you make some good points about the "BUZZ", which I've been lured into and thanks for sharing some info/points on the processors! :D Sounds like it may have better Arch and GPU abilites, so that's cool. I feel less distracted by that now.

I shoot with a DSLR camera, so I know all to well about MP size versus a good sensor and pixil density. I agree MP and GHZ ect... isn't everything!

Thanks for sharing the link, good stuff! Pentacel extrapolation, I would have never remembered that term. I imagine the Extreme is going to make a lot of DI owners jealous! I would still have the Moto Droid if it wasn't for the slideout keyboard, it wasn't appealing to me.

Maybe the re-design will include the front facing cam...

I think almost everyone gets drawn into those buzz words at first (unless you've been around the game a while). I mean it's really kinda hard not to. It is helpful when someone who knows a bit more points out the importance of remembering what's really important though (so thank you ghdtpdna)

As for a front facing camera, I don't believe that any of the rumors or pictures point to the Xtreme sporting one. I know some things change last minute, but it seems unlikely that such a major change would be made right before announcement/release (I'm basing my comments on the leaks over at HoFo btw).

EDIT: Just realized you may have been talking about the Droid 2... not to sure about that one b/c I haven't been following it.

MOTOBLUR isn't really a skin. My Devour looks exactly like stock android, with the exception of the MOTOBLUR specific widgets I have on my home screen.

Minus the green dialer and the blue contacts buttons, they look nearly the same. The rest are just removable widgets. Saying it doesn't look like stock at all is a bit of an exaggeration, wouldn't you say?

could u please link me to the where you read (or saw) that the Extreme has a better benchmark than the Galaxy S. I know that the Galaxy S is a beast with the Hummingbird processor and dedicated GPU, so if the Extreme is more powerful than it then i might just wait for it to come to Europe

Not really, but its just my opinion. The app drawer handle is different (but I'll agree that its somewhat similar) the notification bar icons are different, the application icons are different, the app drawer itself is different. The only thing thats exactly the same is the white notification bar. But like I said, just my opinion.

I'd be careful about making a distinction between what you know and what you think you know. I've only recently begun making this distinction myself tbh. Basically what I'm suggesting is that all the information about unreleased phones is largely speculative and should be filed under "what we think we know". Benchmarks, leaks and hype are great, but until the phone is released and lots of people can go hands on, we are unlikely to have any cold hard facts. Even the period after the phone is announced but before it is on sale is still really a period of uncertainty concerning performance.

My point is, while the benchmark showing the Xtreme beating the heralded Galaxy S Hummingbird processor is compelling, I would take it with a grain of sand/salt. Until both phones are released everything really is in the realm of what you think you know. I certainly hope the results are correct and indicative of the Xtreme's real world performance though.

One more thing: I find that this type of mentality helps me keep expectations in check. I have been disappointed before b/c my expectations were to high... this should help.

i totally agree with you, but i can afford to think that because this phone isnt coming to Europe for now. So if performance isnt is as good as that chart shows i wouldnt mind too much.
