HTC Desire and iPhone 4

the problem is Apple can't make something innovative. I watched the iphone 4 presentation on youtube and I laughed my ass off when Steve Jobs couldnt connect to the Internet with the iphone 4 LOL.

As said before, there is nothing innovative coming from apple now. Video calling ? yeah i had that like on a phone for 5 years.

Overpriced and Overhyped !!!!

The problem for me with apple (any apple product) is how restricted they are. Locked down. Take an apple mac for example, want to change registry entries? Good luck!

I like to customise everything and if I can't, I'm not interested.

I would also mention taht everyone has an iphone, but teh desire seems to have taken off somewhat ;)

I'm sure I would have been happy with an iPhone but the reasons I got the Desire:
*Didn't have to pay for the phone and I like the design of it.
*Android is more customisable.
*Every man and his dog has an iPhone and I wanted something different (though the Desire is proving popular amongst people I know!)
*I can find free apps to do what I want most of the time.
*Facebook/Google syncing makes everything easier.

The latest iPhone is hardly groundbreaking, it won't be any better than anything out already. The main advantages over other phones is because of the apps store and the operating system (user experience). Is it worth paying a bucket load of money for an iPhone?
But honestly, if people want to rave about their iPhones then good for them, they're obviously happy with it and that's what matters. I can't stand fanboys of any kind, I think it's nonsense to champion a specific device when they're pretty comparible.

I have a problem with Apple, not the phone itself. On principle I refuse to support Apple at all. So sick of all the Apple bull**** they've put out over the years: 'magical', 'revolutionary', raiding gizmodo (they got FREE publicity for their damn phone, wtf), going on about the evil that is Adobe, patent suing, blatant lies about being the 'first' on everything, etc.

Nope, never going down the same direction unless they change.

No-one is going to deny that iPhones (esp the new one) are powerful bits of kit, and in many ways they are fantastic.

However having had a 3GS for a year, I can only agree with the points that people have made about gettin fed up of being tied to Apple. That is the reason that I ended up getting rid of it and going with an Adroid based handset. Why should I have to hack the phone (ie jailbreak) to get a basic level of customisation?

So yeah Im more than happy with my Desire, Andriod offers everything I need. Maybe the apps arent as polished or as plentiful as Apple's, but that will change with time, and at least you can return one if you don't like it.

I might head over to an Apple forum or two that I used to frequent and stir things up a bit....... ;)

They have a great talent for taking existing technology and making it a more minstream feature.
Can you rekember the first iterations of android before the g1 came out? Looked more like a blackberry. Touchscreen was around before the iphone and yet its now commonplace. You shouldnt overlook their contribution to the market.

I'm no fanboy of either platform. I have both devices. Most fanboys I come across have not owned the platform they slate, its just an opinion based on theory.
Being locked down? What, to the 200,000 strong app store and most comprehensive music utility around?

Ill stick with android for a while longer, but I'm not being screwed again like I was with the hero.

As for jailbreaking to get features - errr, apps2sd???

I'm not a fanboy. I still got the 1st generation iPhone which i unlocked to get basic customisation. To be serious, Apple is coming up with mediocre products like the iPad. Though Apple is kind of making old products more innovative like you said with the touchscreen.

Apple products are more like a niche product where premium customers pay an inflated premium price for it. In my opinion, I thought that Jobs learned about his previous mistake rivaling Windows. Steve Jobs' alleged lust for power and why he was making the same mistakes with the iPhone that led to the Mac losing out to Microsoft in the late 1980s. I quote at some length:
The Microsoft approach harnessed positive feedback. The more models of Windows computers, competitively priced, the more people would buy Windows computers. And the more Windows computers people bought, the more programmers would write their software for Windows, not Apple. And the more Windows software there was, the more attractive Windows computers would be. And so on. That’s how Windows wound up with around 90 percent of the desktop operating system market.
With the iPhone, Jobs is again forgoing this positive feedback. He’s not licensing the operating system to other handset makers. There’s only one kind of iPhone — love it or leave it.
Meanwhile, Google is following a variant of the Microsoft strategy…. Why is Jobs choosing the same path that, last time around, kept him from conquering the world? I had puzzled over this for months until I had a conversation with tech-watcher Harry McCracken, who suggested a theory that seemed outlandish at first but is making more and more sense to me: Steve Jobs just isn’t bent on world domination.

In my opinion, Apple locks their phone because they simply don't care about their customers. Is Steve Jobs making the same mistake? Yes, maybe. Does he care? No, not at all because they are making nice profit.
Now Android is like Microsoft in the 1980s, in a few years most of the phone will have Android running and software developers will turn to Android as it will become more attractive to them due to the larger customer base.

Iphone 4 video calling named FaceTime? More like /facepalm.
It's not i'm a fanboy, i own both an iphone and android phone. It's just the business view where Apple is failing with their iphone.

Only my few cents. !

Ok, Well I am going to compare the Desire as it will be with 2.2 to ensure this comparison is up to date:

positives
browser zooming auto refits text to view so no scrolling horizontally to read.
can download files from the browser.
can share files via blootooth
widgets
7 screens
customisable folders
customisable lockscreen
customisable app images
phone can be a portable hard drive.
not having to use iTunes for everything
larger screen
wifi tether
rooting is easier and safer than jailbreaking
installation on non market apps
removable battery (you'll agree when your battery dies)
google/facebook/picasa integration (teh sex)
FLASH
The fact that my phone can be completely different to yours (see post desktop thread)
cheaper

beta positives
- the link with desktop browsers, this is awesome
- the music streaming service
- faster web browsing

negatives
screen quality is slightly better on iphone 4
battery life may be better (not sure until used in practice)
better games right now on iphone
light on when video recording (although this will come soon, possibly only to rooted users tho)

Please feel free to question any of the above, and I will explain why i am right and you are wrong :p

reasons to get a Desire over the iPhone 4 (I just sold my 3G)

1. Desire has slightly more ram than the iPhone 4
2. you can remove/swap the battery in the desire
3. you can replace/upgrade the memory via sd card in the desire
4. you can view full flash on the desire (soon)
5. there are more 'decent' free apps for android
6. Android is developing far quicker than the iPhone OS.
7. the Amoled screen on the Desire is more responsive for video playback
despite being slightly lower pixel density.
8. Android is far more customisable than iPhone OS 4.0
9. you get free sat nav on the desire
10. you can easily tether your Desire to a pc to share the internet connection, and soon use it as a wifi hotspot.
11. you can get snes and gameboy advance emulators for the desire without 'jailbreaking' it.
12. you can drag and drop files to the Desire like a usb drive
13. you get live wallpapers on the desire
14. you dont need to use iTunes
15. Apple dont control what you can and cant do with your phone

thats just off the top of my head

Has that actually been confirmed anywhere? Multitasking capabilities would suggest 512 but I haven't seen any official or reliable specs released on the A4 clockspeed or the amount of RAM.

Doesn't really matter though, it'll no doubt be smooth regardless of how much memory they've put in it.

edit: just to point out, if this is the same A4 from the iPad, it will definitely have only 256MB on board. They may have modified it, though.

This has to be one of the key reasons for me. Apple can control all they want on their own phones, but trying to lock me into software and music and so on on my PC via utter bloatware is not for me.

Indeed. Off topic but I won't even use Quicktime, app or plugin. If a website is short sighted enough to market their products in quick time, they've lost a customer in me.

Apple has specced a higher resolution screen for the iPhone 4 but it's physically smaller than Desire's and does anyone here feel the Desire needs any more pixels than it already has?

The fact that you can replace the battery in the Desire is a big plus in my book - and something I can't believe Apple still won't let you do, despite the long history of Apple battery-related issues.

I really like the three physical buttons compared to the iPhone's one (is there any change on the iPhone 4?).

I certainly don't like the locked in platform that Apple insists on, and all this anti-Adobe flash business is just plain silly.

The only plus side I can see for the iPhone is if you manage your music on a Mac or PC using iTunes. Syncing music to the Desire is actually pretty disappointing overall, but not impossible.

I'm also disappointed with the inferiority of business-related support for the Desire compared to Windows phones, but that's another discussion.

Overall the Desire is a fabulous, if slightly flawed gem.

A lot is being made of the screen resolution on the iPhone4, but is the average user really going to be able to see any real difference between it and, for instance, the Desire?

Video calling! I made a video call using the phone network to my wife FOUR YEARS AGO! It was fun and worked quite well but we never used it again! Holding a phone in front of you and chatting to someone is not in any way an intuitive, comfortable thing to do. The iPad would have been a MUCH better device to have put this in. In fact I would imagine a lot of iPad owners are coming to the conclusion that Apple have crapped all over that device with the new phone!

But let's face it; Apple have established themselves as THE cool phone maker. I've yet to see a tv ad for HTC (or any Android phone) but I see Apple ads regularly. I'm sure many, many potential iPhone owners would be better off with an Android smartphone, but they don't know they exist. It won't be helped by the phone shops going into Apple over drive over the next few weeks.

I've gotta say that once the iPhone 4 comes out the only thing really going for the Desire is customisation, google navigation and it's price. With Desire you have a shit selection of apps and the unforgivable memory issue. I would much rather have a phone with quality apps, after all without the apps a phone is just a phone.
