And to me they were successful. Maybe because I realized without marketing, you're not going to move major units of anything. 200-300k moved would be a highly successful launch even though engadget.com are throwing out numbers around 150k.

Maybe next time, people will use common sense instead of common ignorance.

Clearly, you have a marketing background.

EVO has been a big success, but everything is relative. If they sold 200K, that would be like 500K for VZW, so that is great sales.

Please consider that unlike the Pre that had over 200K sitting idle in channels for months (a lot still are sitting), EVO sold THROUGH their channel supplies already and still have strong demand.

In the Sprint world, this sold just as well as the Incredible did for the Verizon world- IMO.

The Sprint rep at my local store told me the first shipment was 700k units and they expected to sell them all at launch.

Whatever the number is, it would have been larger had more units been ready to ship. Virtually all stores sold their first stock and began pre-orders for their second a week or more before launch.

It can only be described as a hugely successful debut.

No way they shipped 700K units to load into channels, yet alone sell through to consumers. That would be insane. The rep was apparently on some form of recreational drugs or talking out their butt. That scale would be more for a game system (or perhaps the new evil iPhone) and not a phone carrier (a smaller one at that).

added:

Even the Incredible, which is on a far bigger carrier, targeted 300,000 for first channel fill.

If I recall, Sprint earlier stated they sold 220K to current customers and over 100K to new customers. Sprint now says they overstated these totals. It seemed high and Sprint now agrees that was too high.

I'm more curious as to how many will ultimately be returned due to either iPhone 4, size or whatever other reason during the 30 day return period.

The little tiny rat-shack store near me hidden in a strip-mall sold 24 on day 1. They probably don't have 24 people walk in their store in a normal week.

Wow, somebody has egg on their face... What happened to all these "1.3 million people pre-registered/pre-ordered!!!!!!" Oh, and then there were the people who insisted that Best Buy had 200,000 to sell and sold out of their pre-orders. Then there were the people who said that Radio Shack had 70,000 to sell and also sold out of their pre-orders early. These third party retailers may have sold out of their pre-orders, but no way did they have the numbers reported above.

To be honest, I'm not surprised.

I still think they sold between 300,000 - 400,000 over the weekend.
Who cares about 1st day sales anyway.

Great numbers for Sprint.

Due to timing of sales and lag for reconciled numbers from all channels, Sprint will not (literally) post about first day sales- these numbers are probably adjusted based on first few days of sales, unless they have changed their method of reporting launch sales (and everyone else that sells consumer products).

Please keep in mind that just because people in this thread and others like this one may luv the device and know about it, most Sprint consumers and new phone buyers do not.

Still, 150,000 sounds too low, unless allocations were not as large and widespread as first thought. You can still get the EVO at our local Sprint and RS stores, but BB is sold out ATM. I think Sprint is talking allocation and sell-in, as far as "sold out" and NOT sell-through to consumers. If so, why do Sprint and Radio Shacks still have them? Seems Sprint allocated too many to their own stores and Radio Shack, but not enough to Best Buy.

BTW, BB did NOT have 200K EVO's. They did not have that many Incredibles for launch, either.

When I picked up my EVO from BB the phone manger said they expected to sell around 200k - 300k over the weekend. My $$ is on they hit that number.

If so, great, but apparently BB did not get that many and Sprint loaded their stores up with allocations. Our local Sprints got 200 each, but BB got less than half of that. Both BB stores combined.

They are sold out, but were apparently shorted their expected allocation- per the local BB.

Either case, EVO is doing very well :)

i think no one will ever know so it doesn't do any good to guess any more. Sprint will never release the real numbers - even though they should to give themselves a boost and pat on the back.

Only if the device has not sold well, since PR is important for shares ;)

Case in point, Nintendo was very vocal about DSi sales, but Sony was mum on PSP Go sales ;)

My guess is Sprint had to have sold at least 150K and are probably on target for 250K for launch period. For just a few days/week for a smaller carrier than At&t and VZW, this is amazing, none the less.

added:

There are about 850 BB stores in the US, so now way they had 200K to 300K. Just with the 200K number, that is 234 per store and 352 at 300K. No way- ever.
