Accessories EVO Camera Protection

LRF to the rescue!! Get some "little rubber feet" - the dimple kind. Put 4 on your phone so when you set it down a) the lens doesn't touch, b) the phone doesn't touch (less heat), and c) the speakerphone doesn't get muffled (although admittedly it's an amazing speakerphone and only has like 20% muffle/loss; my NexusOne's is in the same place but it is muffled like 70% when I lay it flat on its back).

where to get those?

I picked up a body glove just for that reason.
Is it this model? I picked it up when I got my EVO and promptly returned it the very next day.

Way too flimsy, made the volume rocker harder to access (and the power button too) as well as made the overall phone less secure in your hand, since the sides of the case were so fragile, they were flexing at the slightest movement.

To say nothing of the cheap rubber on the back, which in less then 24 hours of use was beginning to (slightly though) peel off at the edges.

It also made the phone look very cheap. I'm glad I got my Invisible Shield yesterday and installed it the same way.

I was concerned about the glass scratching when I first got the phone, but I'm starting to think that fear is far exaggerated. Dirt and sand will get to the lens regardless of if it is inverted or not, and nobody ever worries about the lens of other phones getting scratched. I don't see how just resting the phone on my wood desk is going to scratch it unless I bang it against it.

Wouldn't one do the same thing? One below the camera would tilt the whole unit up and keep the lens from touching the surface.

You'd want at least 2 LRF in order to keep the phone from tipping side to side (balance). Ideally 4 would get the whole phone off the surface. I would find the smallest ones possible so they blend in and don't stick out too much. You can get them about anywhere, like a wal-mart or target. Super cheap, like < $2 for a whole pack of them and you can put them on just about anything! :)

The very one and I have a totally different view of it. Like it a lot. I find that the power button is actually easier to hit now because of the recess in the case. No issue with the rubber back at all and my phone is in and out of my front pocket frequently. I do find that the area around the rocker could be a bit thicker but over all very pleased. Most of all, the camera is below the back so it does not make contact when set on it's back. To each their own.

I have a case for my evo and the problem with the phone resting on its lens has been resolved but i still managed to get a microscopic scratch (thankfully on the outer edge of the lense ) because my phone spends a lot of time in my pocket. the last thing i'm worried about is laying the camera on the desk which i can control by placing it there gently. i guess the point i'm trying to make is that there is more of a concern when the camera is flopping around in your pocket with the many coins and keys in there with it. Unless a case totally covers the lense, I'm afraid that its still prone to scratches.

Here is another, some people were stated that it doesn't rest flat so its protected. False, Just want you guys to order a case or something to keep it protected. :D

What is this supposed to prove? All it shows is that the lip surrounding the lens lays flush. Run your fingernail across your lens and then up around that lip. It is beveled. Not a lot, and not enough to protect the lens if it's laid on an uneven surface, but it is beveled.

Yeah, there are reports that all these new HTC phones (EVO, Inc, etc.) that have the protruding camera lenses are falling susceptible to scratches to the housing and lens cover. At the end of the day, micro-scratches will not affect the picture quality too badly, but it's obviously a poor design decision on HTC's part.

That being said, having a DROID, I empathize with EVO owners who don't want to add more bulk to their device. So, what I'd recommend is what I do:

1) For the most part, the phone is naked; no bulky cases or sticky screen films.

2) When it's not in my hand and it's either in my pocket or on a surface, it's always in contact with one of these microfiber "suede" pouches.

This is a GREAT pouch for our devices because:

a) it protects from the dust/lint that's in your pocket that might creep under your glass,

b) it protects from the other hard items that you might inexcusably be putting in contact with your device (e.g. keys),

c) you can put the phone either INSIDE or ON TOP of the pouch when on a table or something, and

d) it acts as a GREAT screen wipe, to wipe off those pesky fingerprints. Honestly, I returned the stupid screen skins and bulky hardcases for the simple solution of this pouch.

Here's a tip for those cutting small circles of screen protector to place on their camera lens.

I used a crystal clear static protector, of course I'm sure the Invisible Shield type would work also. I did a rough cut with an x-acto knife then trimmed the edges with a sharp (new) fingernail clipper. The rounded edges of the fingernail clipper allowed me to get a nicely rounded circle cut from the film. The end result looks great, no effect on camera quality, and I no longer have to worry about scratching my lens.

just being careful isn't an option for me. i want this phone protected. i have searched high and low and have found a few good suggestions but finally came to two possible solutions for someone who doesn't want to use a case. i don't want to use a case because i like the feel of this phone with the full body skin i am currently using.

solution number one: i found these tabs that are used to protect wood floors from scraps or cabinets from hitting the frame too hard. i put one on each side near the camera to elevate and protect it. i like the way it protects but the look isn't very nice. i wish they came smaller and in black. the felt ones don't feel like they elevate the phone high enough.

NOTE: the quality on two of these pix are pretty bad bc they were taken from a friend's 2mp camera phone. the others were all taken with my evo and resized. p/s my camera lens is in perfect condition, that picture is deceiving. lol

solution number two: this one takes a little more work. i bought the smallest suction cup at the hardware store for 29 cents and the blue removable/reusable putty for 2.49 (can probably get it a lot cheaper somewhere else!)

i took a surgical blade (probably not available to someone not working at a hospital or animal clinic) and cut off the tip as flat as i could. i then took blue putty and carefully lined it on rim of the suction cup. afterwards i just placed the suction cup over the lens and made sure to line the blue putty onto the battery cover and not the lens. when you remove it, you can just roll off any excess putty with your index finger. you can just place it back on. if you need more putty, you already have a lifetime's supply.

does anyone know of a removable/resealable glue or tape that would work better without leaving any residue on the phone? i really like the results but it'd be much easier without putty. oh well for now this will do.

i'm really happy with the results and thought i'd pass them along in case this might be something someone has been looking for. i'm definitely looking for new ideas. :)
