Eris still worth getting?

I'm on verizon and eligible for a NE2 phone. I have been waiting out the incredible back-log, but just noticed today that I can get the Eris for free with the NE2 discount while the incredible will be $150 (plus the wait!)

I'm currently using a feature phone and love the idea of moving to an android phone for free. I've been lurking on this board for a while and a lot of the people here seem to really like their Eris...would people recommend it to someone at this point (for free!) or recommend waiting a couple more weeks for the incredible (and a likely price drop with the new phones coming out).

I know given the personal nature of phones it may be difficult, but I'm interested to hear people's opinions of the staying power of the eris.

Definitely would recommend it. Unless you want the best of the best and are a super user, the Eris would be perfect for you.

Personally, I'd dish the $150 for the Incredible. Over two years, that's 20 cents a day to have a much faster phone that will be able to adequately handle froyo which is supposedly due out by the end of June for some phones.

+1 If you don't mind not having the fastest phone out there, and are just looking to get just the most basic functionality from the phone(ie phone calls, text messaging, email, web browsing), The Eris is a fantastic deal. If you think you might be a power user (someone who lives on there phone) then I would probably spring for the incredible or wait for the Extreme/shadow or Droid 2

I love my eris, but I bought it used off contract for $200. I wouldn't use my NE2 on it, I decided to save that for later on a better phone. This way I still get to use an Android phone and when the next great phone comes out (apparently like every other month with android) I know I still have the option to get it without having to buy it off-contract. But thats just me.

I'll also add that I was ready to jump ship on the Eris until I rooted it a couple of weeks ago. Before root - I wanted to slam my phone into something daily. After root - I want to lightly throw my phone at a soft pillow a couple times a week.

for me and my wife both..... we love ours..... we havent experienced any of the problems that some of the others have had (knock on wood)...... I think its a great first android phone......

having said that, and Im not a "power user" by any means, but there are some things that are sorely lacking in my mind....... such as true hands free dialing (a feature even low end dumbphones have had for years), a2sd (just not enough storage space), and the ability to remove unwanted stock apps like mp3 store......... since my phone came new with 2.1 already on it I cant root so I cant have any of these features

I personally dont care about 2.2 other than those features..... the phone is fast enough for me...... I dont need flash 10.1 for anything I do....... and wifi tethering is completely pointless in my mind (where could I possibly be that I need to hook up more than 1 computer to my phone wirelessly?)

just my 2 cents...... overall if you dont need the latest and greatest and arent intending on being an extreme power user then you should be absolutely delighted with the Eris

It would depend on what software your phone will have. Some people are still getting phones with 1.5, others with 2.1. There is a sub-forum dedicated to "Root" you may like to read.

I had looked into the root forum and got quite the opposite impression--that is, if your phone was upgraded OTA, then you could still root it, but that the leaked 2.1 roms broke the bootloader.

I have read that some new phones are coming with the 1.49 boot loader.

As much as I love my Eris, i wouldn't recommend getting one now on a two year contract. Forget the fact that the phone is 7 months old on Verizon, the Hero itself is almost a year and a half old now? Old school technology. Yes, the phone does everything i want it to, but i can't imagine locking myself down with it for two more years at this point.

Spend some extra coin and get a better phone, grab the incredible or possibly wait for the new Motorola Droid phones coming out soon.

Pissed off? Why? It's your opinion and the OP asked for opinions. Should anyone bash you, they need to get a life and get their head out of the sand.

I think that the Eris is a great phone and if you can get a nearly free deal on it, then I'd say go for it. If you are going to pay $100 or more, I'd go with paying a little more to get either the Incredible or another, newer phone coming out soon.

To the topic creator, how much would the incredible be with your NE2 Deal? If you can get the Incredible for $150 or under, i would go with that over the Eris.

I've learned its better to wait for something great than settle for something thatll give you problems. Trust me, wait for the incredible. Some of us Eris users can't even dial or answer calls sometimes the lag is so bad.

you know something weird. I work with a girl that has the incredible. It's not "that" incredible. I played with it. My eris with launcherpro on it is actually faster than her incredible. just my two cents.....
