Google Maps is just as good. Just open the app, hit Menu, then click on Layers. Enable Satellite, and you'll be able to zoom in and out, scroll around the world. I've used it many times to check out addresses around the US, and world. Give it a try, or download it if you don't have it.
just to let you know, it wasn't real time. Google earth is still just satellite images, the same ones you can see in google maps (which is why google earth isn't really necessary, except for the extra little features like the google earth community or whatever they called it)
