I like the stock msg system really... I am not too into caring whats in the background of my texts and I am not really a big fan of the talk bubbles. I didnt try either of those programs too long, are there any key FUNCTIONALITY features that I missed that are worth re-downloading?

I liked handcent better but when the inc first came out handcent wouldn't let the phone go to sleep. A new release fixed that problem , but I was using Chomp and discovered I could set individual ringtones for incoming texts by contact. I can't do that with handcent so I stayed with Chomp.

Yeah you can in handcent.

go into the contact's thread, click settings in top right, notification settings. You should see the contact name and the phone number on the top.

Really? I'll give it a try, I tried every setting I could find to make it do that, but perhaps I overlooked it. Thanks!

Handcent seems to load up my contact threads a whole lot quicker too.. I tried chomp for maybe a day or so but like another member stated.. The amount of ads was pretty annoying.

I used Chomp because I liked the pop up notifications better. After a few weeks with it though, I noticed it would get SLOWER and slower to load up and there were usually a few bugs that I always got.

Handcent, on the other hand, has a worse looking pop up to me, but it loads fast and works fairly well. The only problem that seems to happen is when the pop up shows up, when I go to type, sometimes the pop up doesn't move and the keyboard ends up covering up the chat bubble so I can't see what I'm typing.

Regardless, I think Handcent wins lately.

There are two ways to enter settings. The "main" settings, and then when you open a thread, you can change the settings for that contact. That's where you can customize the text ringtone (or anything else) for that contact. You can have a completely different look for each contact if you want. I heart Handcent!

I have used Handcent and the only feature I liked was it has quick reply which allows you to reply without opening up the phone. The downside is no notification for Visual Voicemail..
I have not used Chomp yet. May try it out soon.

:) I notice a lot of people like handcent/chomp because of that quick reply feature. But that is the first thing I turn off. I hate it! Maybe because I have too many people who like to look at the phone when it dings to see what my text says. The pop up makes it too easy for them to do that! LOL
