My Droid Will Always Go Naked

I heard an interview this morning on CNBC about investing in Corning Glass Co. because of their scratch proof Gorilla Glass, that Apple would be using. On and on, and I'm wishing I can't wait for a phone that won't scratch. Then one of them said, Oh well the Droid uses Gorilla Glass. I had to pull to the side of the road and weep. In my hands was a Droid with GORILLA GLASS!!!! It took about 2 seconds to rip that ugly screen protector off. Wow, This phone is beautiful naked. Me like Shiny.
On top of that, the screen response was way better. (could have been power of suggestion) But it really did seem nicer. Like silk. And things I touched reacted better.
So anyway, below is the link to Corning's Gorilla site. And below that, if I did it correctly was the video of some kid hacking the $#!% out of his Droid with keys. So I hope it embeds OK.

A lot of people (including myself) have had no screen protector since we got them at release. I have NO scratches, scuffs or marks of any kind on the screen. The bezel around the screen and the case itself are a bit worn but the screen is exactly the same as the day I bought it.

6 months for both me and my GF.. neither of us have scratched it. Ive cracked the top corner of the screen, but havent scratched it

im very happy with the glass on it and i use mine with super dirty and greasy hands (do it myself mechanic) and nothing has damaged it

Unnecessary...maybe, but my phone does not have one blemish anywhere on it...and that makes me happy

I tried invisible shield for two weeks or so and never got used to the touch of it. it used to always drag my finger. But i definitely would recommend invisibleshield to someone who uses a device that is scratchable.

I don't have a screen protector, but I'm a classic "drop the phone as you get out of the car" person. In fact, dropped the phone twice in the first week, but haven't since then. Because of that I have a rubberized case, which I admit changes the look of the phone badly, but underneath it's perfect like new.

From the drops I gave the phone on concrete, including a bounce and a couple rollovers before it stopped, it would have been damaged. I'm just not coordinated enough I guess!!

I have a verizon screen protector and the shell and holster case on mine. The screen protector is mainly to make cleaning the finer prints off easier and to keep sticky stuff off the screen (my girlfriend has a three year old, enough said). If she gets something sticky on my screen, I just take off the old, sticky protector and put on a new one. The case is to keep from scratching our denting my droid.

I figure that if I'm going to spend $200 on my droid, what's an extra $30-$40 gonna hurt?

My droid just keeps getting better and better. I've had the screen protector on from day 1 (the Best Buy salesperson actually installed it for me) and I've never liked it. Mottled, cloudy, streaky, sticky ... but I figured it was something I just had to live with because god forbid I got a scratch on the irreplaceable glass! Anyway, I just took off the screen protector and the screen looks and feels AWESOME now: how I would expect a Droid screen to look. With all the raving about how crisp and brilliant the Droid screen is supposed to be, I never really even knew how good it was until a minute ago when I removed that godawful plastic barrier.

I have a scratch on my back button so it does happen. I have been using a full screen protector ever since. I dont even notice it anymore.

in a moment of drunk, angry, stupidity, I threw my DROID across my house, not a scratch on her (well, not on the screen anyway)

Gorilla Glass is scratch resistant. It isn't unscratchable. That said, to use or not use a screen protector is a personal judgment call. People have certainly scratched their Droid screens if you search around. In several cases it didn't take much to scratch the screen according to the owners. Personally, I'm a "better safe than sorry" type. YMMV, of course.

...and the key test is meaningless. Keys aren't harder than glass. The video might as well be using noodles to test scratch resistance.

If you are looking for a screen protector and want the bare glass look and feel, I'd recommend the Steinheil SGP Crystal. It's not quite like the bare glass but the closest I've found so far.

Spot on. My Droid was pre-owned and there is a scratch on the glass, albeit slight. The phone hadn't had a hard life either - the rest of it was immaculate. I also like to think the protector gives a little extra protection against cracking.

Spot on again. There is a reason these demos use a bunch of keys. Same reason Zagg use a pen, not a pin, to demonstrate the impenetrability of Invisible Shield. They generally have rounded and worn, not sharp, edges (otherwise they'd cut a hole straight through your pocket). All that motion and jangling looks good for the Sellavision and YouTube commercials, but is all for effect.

If you are looking for a screen protector and want the bare glass look and feel, I'd recommend the Steinheil SGP Crystal. It's not quite like the bare glass but the closest I've found so far.

That's the wrong link to GG. Note on the Corning site, which device they're displaying at having GG. It's a non-monikered DROID: Gorilla for Handheld

That being said, who said that the iPhone is using GG? I don't think there has been any official announcement that iPhone is indeed using GG. Gizmodo just posted an iFixit first-time drop test on the iPhone (albeit, a shell with no internal components). On the third drop from 3.5 feet, the thing shattered. Note to Apple: If you make a phone out of glass and then surround it with a metal frame, bad things happen when you drop it.

No wonder Apple is releasing their own case for the iPhone called the Bumper case.

I was going to run without a screen protector, but one came with my otterbox case and I did such a good job putting it on without any bubbles or dust, that I decided to keep it. It isn't any less responsive and gives me peace of mind.

Unfortunately I ran my droid naked for the first 3 months I had it, and I am ashamed to say that I had it in my pocket with a quarter and the quarter scratched the screen.

my otterbox scratched up one side of the bezel on my droid. and i think it put two tiny marks on the back of the phone.
