Overclocking=pointless?

The title says it all. I was using my non oc-ed Fresh 2.1.2 Rom as a benchmark to compare it with a fully OC-ed 768mhz Aloysius rom using Nesoid on super mario 3, on the exact same level. If anything it was slower when I was overclocking. So whats the big deal? It doesn't really make sense to me that I would actually lose performance when I was 1.33 times more output in performance. Maybe I did something wrong? Anyways, I did a nandroid backup back to Fresh 2.1.2. I think I am done with overclocking, as I don't really have a need for it if these are the results I will be getting.

You should not OC Fresh 2.1.2 at all. The ROM was built to have speed adjustment in the ROM so OC'ing will slow it down. For the other ROM you tried, I have not used it so I don't know what to tell you there.

he didn't OC Fresh 2.1.2, he used it as it should be used as that was his baseline for comparison. Fresh Toast probably would have been a better choice for him to compare BUT, even then, he's right. The performance difference seen when OC'ing a PHONE are not going to be the night and day differences seen when OC'ing a PC. Seriously.. can you tell me that you notice a 1 or 2 MILLISECOND difference in speed?

Yes its a cool and techy/geeky thing to OC..but for a PHONE it really makes no sense.. you use more battery and generate more heat all for a difference that you'd never notice in running any of the apps out there..

The Hero is already running at the max speed its processor is "recommended" to run at.
I'm all for OCing a phone that's got a processor rated for more than it runs at out of the box. But you're not going to get enough extra out of your hero to (noticeably) benefit without burning the thing out.

Ive tried the OC'ed Fresh 2.1.1 and it did seem a bit snappier when the CPU decided to run at high speeds. But alot of the time i noticed alot of screen lag.
I think this had alot to do with the OC'ed cpu it did not always stay at high speeds consistently. When i opened control panel i would notice the cpu speeds erratically jump from low 200's to mid 700's.
Saddly i think ill stay away from OC'ed roms for now and just hope that sprint picks up a phone with a faster processor to replace the hero.

honestly, I believe OC'ing makes a pretty big difference, including in battery life. I've been running IcedHoneyBun since it came out, and OC'd it last night, and with it set to scale down when the screen is off and scale back up with the screen on, it seems to last just as long, and seem much more snappier than it was

I defintely think it helps. I am running Fresh Toast and have tinkered with OCing a decent bit. I used to use SetCPU with my old version of Fresh, but I'm liking the Overclocking widget.

I tried going to 2.1.2 without using OCing (just like you're supposed to) and tried running a few games, then compared it with Fresh Toast OCed to 768. A couple of the games were unplayable, very glitchy, or wouldn't even load without overclocking (tried iCommando, iDracula, Big Range Hunting 2, and Sky Force Reloaded).

I tried playing Big Range Hunting 2 with my old set-up and it ran really really slow and I thought that was just how the game was. When I ran it again with OCing, I was blown away at how well the game played now. It was night and day for me.

Psssst... it's called the EVO...that's what replaced the Hero

Ok so i cam across a thread last night about flashing the Fresh toast kernel into Fresh 2.1.2 which will give you the ability to OC to your liking. I did some searching for the Thread that had the extracted kernel and installed the update zip.

It did nothing to fresh2.1.2 at all except add OC ability and i must say this is one killer rom now. No lag what so ever

There are 3 diff zip files all will work they are just set to the different default OC speeds. Good luck

Im using my Blue Echo rom and have it overclocked and its fast as hell. I believe in overclocking. The only thing I can recommend is that you used overclock widget. Alot of the overclocked roms are clocked down in the boot.img and need to have the overclock widget or setcpu to adjust settings. Phone runs great at 691

Wow... When i read that Fresh is supposed to have a speed adjustment i uninstalled my OC widget...

Very noticable difference, i immediately reinstalled the widget. It ran alot slower without it.

I run Fresh Toast at 480/691 and it's significantly faster AND battery life is still pretty good! I love it!
