The link for update.zip to root your phone is a dead link. Can someone please post an updated link so I can download this file and any other files I need to root.
Thanks
Thanks
If you install any of the new roms that have come out, they all come with root. You don't need the old update.zip
Since you are new, I'm assuming you have 2.1 installed. Please follow this guide : http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-droid/63010-how-install-sprecovery-unrooted-2-1-ota.html
The link to the update.zip is still active there, but make sure you follow the instructions for RSDlite as well...
If it's not even a week old then it has 2.1 on it which means you can't root with update.zip. You're gonna need to flash an sbf file.

Do you realize that you can just install whatever ROM you want once you have SP Recovery? You don't need to install the update.zip (which is just a rooted 2.1 ROM I think) first. Unless that's all you want then I'd skip that step and just install Bugless Beast or Cyanogen or whatever it is that you want.
LOL..You changed your link mr. sneaky...Hah...

No I didn't realize that.
The only reason you'd want to use this update.zip is if you just want to download ROM Manager and switch straight to Clockwork Recovery (arguably better than SP Recovery) and use ROM Manager to do all your ROMming which is a bit simpler and user friendly.
I want to use ROM Manager.
Well you can always install ROM manager once you're rooted.
Here's the deal. That ESE81 with SP Recovery .sbf file gives you SP Recovery but the version of 2.1 is NOT rooted, meaning you have to use SP Recovery to flash a rooted ROM because you need root to download ROM manager.
You can just use the update.zip listed there to get a vanilla rooted 2.1 and get ROM manager then use that to download whatever ROM you want from there. Or you can just get the .zip for whatever ROM it is that you want and then you'll still be rooted and able get ROM Manager, ClockworkMod recovery etc.
Doing the latter means you skip a step, but you'll have to figure out which ROM you want and find the .zip or SP Recovery nandroid to install it.
For example if you want the latest FRF57 (Android 2.2) based ROM by Pete you'd just download FRF57V01.zip and rename it update.zip and install with SP Recovery.
Cool thanks for the info. I think I might just root first that way I can make a vanilla backup for one of the "Oh shit" moments.
BTW, thank you for reading enough that you understand what we are saying...I can see you put some research in before you asked here...
@ nstallion, great info. Since I rooted so long ago, I had no idea things where that much easier!!!
