Ok, so just learning from all the posts on here, and MY GOD there is alot to learn with these phones and from you 'guys'. Bit of a step up from my Sony K800i. LOL.

So as I read I will add and change things. Already added a device to save battery life (making screen darker etc) and i'm sure as I read I will learn more. BUT....

When I copied my contacts from my old phone to my new Sim and put it in the desire, the contacts came up twice (now sorted after reading a thread) But I have two problems.

All my contacts came out backwards....

Bill Harris became Harris;Bill Realy annoying for me as I have company names like Daker electrics and now all I get is Electrics, not even the Daker part!!!

Second thing is, what are the numbers after the contact names? Are they to do with how many times the phone has used/stored something to do with that number? The main thing is can I get rid of them?

Ok, I guess these points have been covered before but I scrolled back to page 19 and did a search and nothing I found!

Cheers to all who respond and HELLO!

Sooty.

Hi there, welcome to the forum

First the problem you have with the contacts : Click on People -> the person you want to change -> Menu -> Edit -> click on name -> First name, Last name, Display name will appear. Like First Name you put Bill, Last name Harris and on Display name you can change if you want the first or last name first.

Your second problem, I'm not quite sure what you mean by that but do you have facebook linked to all your contacts if yes that is their status 'upgrade'.

I used to have a Sony Ericsson K800i myself, that was some time ago, but remember something. When you save contacts on the SIM card using the K800i it stores them in a weird way iirc, try to send the contacts from your K800i to your Desire over bluetooth instead.

Or you could also backup the K800i contacts to your memory card (i remember that it exports them to vCard format) and import them into the gmail account linked with your Desire. Then when you sync your Desire the contacts will sync to your phone :)

I tried that and saved to memory card, to then realise the memory cards are different shapes!

As for this gmail account... have no idea so will search, read up and learn!

Orange.

Problem with Bluetooth is that as they gave me a new sim card (3G) I had an old one. I stayed with orange and kept my number. Now my sim doesn't work in my old phone so can't bluetooth any numbers!

I started to edit contacts but I have 200 so is pretty annoying!

Also I work at Cookridge firestation so all the other firefighters are under
Cookridge Tim
Cookridge Eddy
Cookridge Dunny

etc....... but now I've put the sim in the desire they have all come up as just Cookridge!!!!! So I have 14 Cookridge's in my phone book all with different numbers, but all it says is Cookridge. I have no idea who's number belongs to whom!!!!!

GGrrr!!!!!!!!

Yeah, the memory card in the K800i is an M2 and the one in the Desire is a microSD, but you can use your USB cable to copy the contacts from your K800i to your PC and then import them in gmail :)

In the gmail web interface go to "Contacts (left side of screen)" -> "Import"

select the vcf file from your K800i card (can't remember which folder it is in, just look around a bit) and viola, all your contacts in gmail!

Then you set up your gmail account in your Desire "Menu" -> "Settings" -> "Accounts & Sync" -> "Add Account" -> "Google"

Edit: The backup to memory card option is somewhere in the phonebook app on the K800i, I can't remember where as my K800i decided to fry itself

If you also have the contacts in outlook or livemail on the pc, you can export them as a csv file containing all the contacts.

if you then log into googlemail on the pc, you can them import the csv file into googlemail.

now your phone will sync all contacts from googlemail.

if you get duplicates, in the people app you will notice on each persons page that you can 'link' people, just link the duplicates together to merge them.

oh, and welcome to the forum.

The company directory is still not working in Android 2.2 at least on my EVO 4G. But the good news is that you dont need it to work. There is a better way. I kept thinking that Google was supposed to be the king of searching, so I could not accept the fact that you cannot atleast search by company name. After doing some digging I found out a way to find contacts by company name.

Press the "+" sign next to "Phone" on your home screen then select "Widgets" next select "Google Search" then select "People" and place the search bar on your home screen. Now you can search your contacts by name, company, number, etc. You can select the contact and see the full contact info for that individual and dial the number from there. You can also have the search pull up related email, texts, etc. when you search for the individuals name.
