okay so I have a g1 right now but I'm going to upgrade and I came down to the nexus or the mytouch slide and I want to pick the right phone because if I make the wrong decision I will have to keep the phone for almost 2 years for my next upgrade. I heard the mytouch looks smooth and the htc sense theme is cool. But the nexus one has a better screen the the mytouch and it can compete with others but its media, contact, and message display is oldschool kind of like the g1 so I'm kind of stuck which one should I pick

MyTouch Slide I almost guarantee you that the life left on the Nexus is about the rest of this year then next year the next Nexus will be out. there is now way Nexus is going to last 2 years as far as updates go. Its close to being outdated everything is passing it up spec wise and its supposed to be setting the standard.

I have to disagree with the above. HTC does not support low spec'd phones with sense for very long. The Droid Eris by HTC is 7 months old and will not be receiving any more updates from HTC. The Nexus One on the other hand is a high spec'd device still even though it is 6 months old, hardware wise it is superior to the Slide in every aspect, other than lacking a keyboard. Plus nexus one updates come straight from google, not through HTC. Again, Nexus one already has 2.2 and droid eris (only 2 months older than the nexus one) has been told they will not recieve 2.2. The MyTouch 3g is still back at 1.6. But with the Nexus, as long as its hardware is powerful enough to support the new android version, you will get it from google before anyone gets updates from HTC.

And as far as the nexus one being outdated, there is only 1 phone on the market right now that is as powerful as the nexus, and that is the Droid Incredible, which is basically the same thing as the Nexus One. All the devices slated to come out on the high end within the next 2-3 months are more or less on par with the Nexus One.

Wow, this post most be a joke. Please tell me what phone has passed the Nexus spec wise? And please don't jest me with the EVO screen or the DInc 8 mp camera. Right now the Nexus 1, DInc, and EVO all sit at the same level.

Monmouthdroid hit the nail on the head.

I use Swype for typing on my N1, but if you're the kind of person that prefers a physical keyboard then by all means go for the 3G Slide. The Slide is weaker on specs and I'm not sure if it supports certain features like live wallpapers since the CPU only runs at 600 Mhz. As far as the N1 being outdated, all current phones will be outdated by the end of the year. Like it was with regular computers, cell phones have now jumped into leap frog mode over each other as the technology advances. With dual core processor phones right around the corner, even my N1 will fade into obscurity by sometime next year. If you're going to choose a phone, go with what you like and what you're comfortable with and do research on them (as to not get the shaft with a phone like the Behold II). The newer Android phones are amazing so just about any of them will be a good pick.

The Droid Variants and Yes Evo included, Desire, Galaxy S....

Hmm, they all have 1ghz snapdragons (or similar), 512 ram, and 3.7-4.3" screens. What phone does that sound like? Oh, a Nexus One. There are obviously variations between each of these handsets that will attract different buyers, but between the Nexus One, Driod Incredible, upcoming Droid X and Droid 2, HTC Evo, Samsung Galaxy S, and I suppose the desire (its kinda like the N1's ugly step-child) You cannot say that one is the BEST phone. They are similar spec'd for the core hardware, and then each has a unique set of frills on top to cater to different audiances. Plus none of those where presented as options in the OP.

And as far as the Slide or N1, there is no way, unless you HAVE to have a physical keyboard, you can say the MT Slide is better in any way. Nexus one WILL receive updates first. It WILL out preform the Slide.

And all of them, except maybe the Galaxy S, will receive better support than a Behold II

Nexus doesn't have an official 2.2 they have a beta they are still waiting on official 2.2 froyo. I am just saying this isn't going to last 2 more years. If Nexus is lucky they will barely be great till summer of next year. Motorola is already planning their 2ghz device for by the the end of this year.

Nexus One isn't going to last long simply because it is still solely sold on the net most people like me like to try before we buy but we can't do that with this phone. Once its sold in stores its not going to sell a lot because its an old device sure specs are great but there is much more to specs than a 1ghz processor. Take for example onboard memory the new high end phones are coming out with high internal storage (gigabytes). Bigger and better screens. much more features like 720p video recording Nexus didn't even have that until the recent Custom Rom. BTW all mytouch's will be updated to 2.2 android

Nexus one may not be entirely out of date but within the coming months it will be.

And the internal storage these phones are coming with (i.e. incredible) does not function the same way as ram. It functions like a built in SD card, it does not expand your ability to store apps in the phone (unless they have 2.2, but the internal memory will still be slower than the ram for reading apps, much like an sd card)
Nexus one may not be entirely out of date but within the coming months it will be.

By that argument though, the MyTouch Slide is already outdated since it came out 6 months after the nexus one and has inferior hardware. After this summer the nexus one will not be out dated, it just won't be the top of the line anymore. It will still be a good phone, still revceive support, and still be head and shoulders above the Slide.

I was giving examples of phones passing up Nexus one '-.-

I am simply saying that sticking with newer is better as far as longevity goes.

Yes, Nexus One will receive updates first but really for how long? I highly doubt its going to be great for the next two years with motorola's plans to release a 2ghz processor phone THIS year. Which will mean more devices to hop onboard as well with the 2ghz prolly will start out slowly with a 1.3ghz and work ways up to 2ghz processors. 1ghz and up processors are going to be the standard for most high end devices next year. Google needs a new Nexus.

Well yes MT3GS would be. Well outdated and not top of the line are almost synonymous in their own right. Of course it will still be good but the longevity for support is running down. Of course it will most likely receive froyo and ginger bread but then what? Google settles down the os updates as everything gets updated then what does it have? the next year people will forget about Nexus due to popularity of other devices beating it.

I understand that. But the OP is wanting advice between the MyTouch Slide and the Nexus One. I do believe that the Nexus One, do to recieving updates from Google, and not Htc+T-Mo, will still be receiving updates longer than the MyTouch Slide. And newer does not mean "better". The nexus one hardware is superior to the mytouch in all ways. there is no way around that. Nexus one will get flash. Slide probably not due to under powered processor. Yes, the nexus one won't be king for ever, but it is at the moment, it is one of the phones the OP asked about, and even being older than the slide, i would put decent money on it being supported for longer than the slide.

The behold 2 came out after the droid, it is no longer receiving updates after 1.6. The Droid Eris came out at the same time as the moto droid, it no longer receives updates. Release date and time it is supported do not directly correlate. it has more to do with how powerful the phone is and who is providing the updates. Nexus one is more powerful and updated by Google. MyTouch 3g is less powerful and updated by HTC, who has a history of short windows of support for mid to low end handsets (which the Slide is, it is NOT a high end phone).

I'm not saying the Nexus one is going to be the best. I do think that as long as its hardware can run the new android builds, it will receive them. And that is going to be longer than the MyTouch Slide. I think the N1 has more longevity left than the slide.

Also, I am focusing mainly on those two since that is what the OP asked for. I personally would go for an Evo 4g or Incredible over the slide or n1 (actually, i have a 1 year upgrade in Nov. that will probably be used to purchase the 2ghz. MOTO, assuming its on Verizon). But those are not the phones the OP asked about, so I am providing him (or her) an answer to their question. Not based on other phones that they may or may not be interested in.

All Mytouches will recieve 2.2 froyo. In a recent article at Tmonews.com Tmobile basically stated that they are playing a no mytouch left behind type of deal so assuming that is true Mytouch will receive every update that Nexus does although may not always be first but received neverthe less.
Of course they don't coprrelate with each other but popularity correlates with support and New correlates with popularity in most cases. I would expect Nexus to go to gingerbread then had being ended with support or a newer nexus will arrive then support slowly ending. I am just saying 2 year on a contract for something old doesn't exactly appeal to me. At least if you want a oldish device buy it off of contract. I don't recommend MT3GS really but with contract don't buy old. Actually wait till motorola releases the milestone XT720 on tmobile it has 720mhz processor which is supposed to be good maybe even on par with nexus. I would pay contract only for Milestone XT720 or Galaxy S. You can get the slide for free on june 19th you will still have to pay 179 for nexus one unless it hits stores.

I originally did answer the question I said slide not based on other devices but mainly for the longevity. If I was to be locked into a contract I would want something new not old.

I agree to wait for the Milestone XT720. it will be on par with the N1 and the other big boys. After the Behold II debacle I am hesitant to recommend a samsung product.

Well I too am weary about Galaxy S but from it releasing so widely its almost hard to believe that they would just up and drop support for it. Plus Galaxy original and BH2 weren't exactly popular but the Galaxy S is far beyond popular.

Loling forever. GUYS THE SLIDE IS BETTER BECAUSE THE NEXUS ONE CAME OUT BEFORE IT durrrr herp derp.

Does anybody want to give him a clue? Do you reckon the dude will even understand that a 1Ghz processor is a lot faster than what's in the Slide, that the Nexus has a better screen and more memory and faster updates?

Man, and here I thought us Android users on average were fairly intelligent. Always someone to drag down the average, I suppose.

It is stupid to lock yourself into a 2 YEAR CONTRACT with something that at MOST will last only 1 YEAR MORE! maybe even less.

I have NEVER said the MT3GS was a better spec phone because it is new I said its a better choice for a 2 year CONTRACT because it is newer!

MT3GS will be supported with EACH AND EVERY SOFTWARE UPDATE THAT NEXUS WILL HAVE FOR THE REST OF 2010. Tmobile already stated they were going to back all mytouch's.

Nexus One's 512mb's internal memory is poor. Only thing Nexus has going right now is that its direct google supported. Thats soon to come to an end and you will see in due time I estimate after the release of Android gingerbread the Nexus is done receiving updates. The next google phone is right around the corner then you will see what you have is crap compared to everything else. After gingerbread the updates are going to be released yearly meaning android 4.0 or whatever you call it that you paid $180 on contract for just faster updates is pointless.

Its practically comparing getting a FREE MT3GS on June 19th vs a $180 Nexus One that you can NOT try out before you buy only to get a 2 year contract and if someone doesn't like it they are stuck with it.

Nexus One DOESN'T EVEN HAVE AN OFFICIAL 2.2 FROYO UPDATE YET. They have a BETA. Sure they will release froyo maybe officially first on Nexus and then Gingerbread but then WHAT? After gingerbread update the Nexus One or any other device will NOT see an update for another YEAR! and by the time the next year comes around I GUARANTEE you that there will be a newer version of the Nexus One.

Its stupid to buy phones because they get updates first for THE MOMENT!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Realize that locking yourself into a 2 YEAR CONTRACT for a phone that is due to end its time THIS YEAR is stupid. If you want Nexus One buy it off contract. If you want MT3GS get it FREE on contract at Tmobile on June 19th. Do NOT waste your money on a contract with Nexus when others are so soon pass this up spec wise it is a waste of $180 dollars.
