Eris users who have rooted their devices fall into a couple of categories, I've noticed: those who would never go back, those who are not sure what to do with their rooted Eris and those who have lost their way and want their phone stock again.

Root access to "hidden" or off-limits-to-the-average-user areas of the phone has great advantages hand-in-hand with great dangers; those areas are not accessible to the casual buyer for real good reasons. ;)

Having said that, I feel that the best candidates for root access are those who are careful and who, at the same time, want their phones to perform beyond what is offered "out of the box," not to mention who strongly want configuration of the device to be nearly unlimited.

The "all things root" section of these forums is chocked full of how-to and what-not-to-do stuff.. spend as much time there as you can before you do anything. ;)

I was on the fence also, and then decided that I'm not going to do it (no offense cableguy) (or atleast not right now). My reasoning is because I don't need access to all that stuff. This is my first smartphone and I feel content with how its working. Unlike some other people, my 2.1 OTA was flawless and my phone has zero problems. I don't want wifi tethering (no need, I'm always at home using my home network, and If I want the internet while on the go, Ill just use my eris) and I think my eris is plenty fast for me. Plus, all the apps I want are on the market.

Just thought I'd give my POV.

I understand but this isnt my first smartphone and I have had unlocked phones before(blackberries, even the tmobile dash) an i loved it.

but this eris is different its seeming like a long process and seems idk just risky so im just trying to hear the goods and the bad of it all... ya dig
I not trying to be mean, but you think that those directions are hard maybe you shouldn't be rooting.....Because If you read them and follow them to the "T" the rooting process is actually fairly simple.
Follow these directions they are easier to follow

doesn't matter. the steps are the same. No rollback needed.

I would say knowing that you can do the same steps as I did with 1.5, then for for it.
The all-in-one script.

I was a but confused... but just know you can't really screw anything up. I mean you can... you it's really hard lol...

Just make sure you've downloaded all the files tha are needed and start the process.
If you get stuck, help is always pretty fast here

ok im seriously thinking about rooting...
can anyone help with this deicison, im a student and im kinda on the fence due to the fact that it voids out your warranty thorugh verizon. i dont have the money to replace me phone like that...

I have rooted; I am much happier. That said, I do have the money to replace the phone if it fails, and that entered into my decision when I made it.

Honestly, if I were you, I would say do not do it. Or, at least wait a little while, see if HTC and Verizon truly are working on an update patch to fix the Eris's problems, and stick with stock through then.

You do not mention that you are having any problems that are pointing you toward root. If you are having issues, are they serious enough to root?

I researched and read as much as I could about root for over a month before doing it. I am so happy I did. Every time I flash a ROM I feel like I got a new phone. Also, some people may have trouble, but I've never heard of someone "bricking" their phone performing root.

This is true. It's really not simple to get into trouble in the first place, but if you do, you can always go back to the backup that you do when you root or get a ROM set up the way you like it. Messing around with the file structure is not as easy as going into the Windows folder on your PC and deleting stuff that you need. You have to put in commands that you will get from someone else who knows how to get around in the adb shell. If you get this far with it, then you'll know what is safe to get rid of and what's safe to keep.

Perhaps a bit of elaboration on the, "..it's fool proof....kinda."

I rooted, I had no motivation at all. I used the all-in-one, and i aint goin back. its fool proof.... kinda.

I think what he means is that you can go into the root process confused (like I was) and figure it out as you go.

I say this because I'f you've never done anything like this before, it doesn't matter how many time you read the instructions over and over and over...
certain things you are not going to understand and are going to be "greek"...
But once you just start the rooting process... it just kinda makes sense.

I guess you have to be there:D

You need the internet to download the stuff. And you will need a PC to flash the Recovery Partition on there. But otherwise, you really don't need a PC if you know what your doing.

HAL,

I recommend starting with this rom:

This one

This is pretty much stock. Nothing fancy but works great.

Afterwards, once you get it all set up, do a nandroid backup and start flashing other other. EE is good, but Framework is taking a little time off right now, and he's not quite done with the latest version.
I really like EE, but i'm waiting for him to finish it before i flash it.

There's other good ones lik Alyosius and many others, that you will find out once you are rooted. But i recommend having a basic and stable rom you can always go back to if you need to.

Do Grdlocks all-in-one script. It's a sticky in the All things root area.

You will need internet to download the different files needed.
I think you can substitute the rom in the all-in-one script for whichever one you choose.. wether it be EE, or the one I recommended.
But if you want to make it simpler, just follow the instruction to a 't'...
then have whatever rom you selected ready and flash it immediately.
