Question: Why does the first 5-10% of battery go so quickly.

Hi folks. Just wondering if anyone had any insight. When I take my phone off the charger it is down to 96-95% within a few minutes. It seems to level out afterwards, but the first 10% blows by very quickly? Anyone know why this may be happening?

I have seen this too. My Diamond used to do that. I have no clue why.

Same here. As I am pulling the plug from the charger it then goes to 97% almost instantly

I am by no means a programmer, or phone tech compared to anyone. But just taking a guess from a logical point of view I think it would be something like this.

The phone's battery bar shows how much voltage is left. It divides the amount of voltage/energy left into sections (lets call them buckets). These buckets depending upon the battery and software sometimes indicate they are empty once they are only slightly down from full.

That would seem to me why a phone would indicate it is down 2-6% immediately after being taken off the charger is you have taken a "handful" of energy out of the bucket and now since it's not being refilled that indicates it is now a "empty bucket" when it is mostly full. This would also go along with your indicate that it goes down about 4% and then doesn't go down anymore. It could be because that bucket has to be drained for it to remove some from the next bucket (after which only a handful being removed would make another 4% bar change).

I think I read something about this with one of the Android phones but I don't have a link, and I thought it was phone specific but it might have been the EVO. I can't remember Hope this helps and don't blame me if I am wrong . Maybe someone more knowledgeable will come along and let you know.

Mine does the same thing too!! I unplug it when I get up for work and within the 1st hour it is down to about 92%.

I've notice this too, it goes to 1 bar if I make a 5min call, so freakin weird.

I've noticed the same thing when plugged into the wallcharger but when I slow charge on my pc it takes longer to discharge the first 10% I think slow charging is more efficient...

Mine does the same, so did my Hero. Today I pulled it off the charger and it literally went to 95% that second. The lowest it has dropped for me was 92%. This happens on my phone within 5-10 seconds, after being charged all night.

Check out eieio's post in the battery section. Not guaranteed to work but some people notice a difference. In a nutshell:

1. Charge phone while on til light is green.

2. WITHOUT unplugging hold power button and choose to shutdown phone. Let charge til green.

3. Power phone back on and etc. etc.

Repeat those steps until there is a 1-2min delay in LED turning from orange/amber to green.

But like I said, eieio posted that in his battery thread if you need it a little more in depth.
