I am new to Android and come from using a Symbian phone. One function that I am not happy with is how the power button works. Here is what I can do with either of them:
Evo:
Power Off
Silent Mode
Vibration Mode
Airplane Mode
Mobile Network
Symbian:
Switch Off
Lock Keypad
General (profile)
Silent (profile)
Meeting (profile)
Outdoor (profile)
Offline (like airplane mode)
Lock Phone
Remove Memory Card
Activate Power Saving
Now some people might say that that is too much. I don't think so. There are two main functions that I think are lacking. I'll ignore the other differences for now though I would like to see some of them as well.
First is having real profiles available at the power button, not just sound and vibration settings. Its not even intuitive what the Androids settings mean. I'm accustomed to my phone ringing and vibrating at the same time most of the time. If I'm around other people, I switch it vibrate only. And if I'm in a meeting, I want both sound and vibrate to be off. As it is, if I'm going between the first and third scenario, it seems like I need to go into this menu, change one option, whereupon it closes, press and hold the power button again, go into menu, then change the other option. Being able to select user changeable profiles would make this much more efficient.
Second is having the ability to easily turn the phone off. As it is, if the phone is locked, I need to first unlock it. Then I have to hold down the power button. Go into menu, choose Power Off. Then choose OK on the confirmation screen. Sheesh. With Symbian, I unlock the phone, then press and hold the power button until it turns off. This is very easy to do with the phone still in your pocket when you have a hardware unlock button but that isn't really part of the discussion right now.
Anyways. I don't know much about android so I don't know what controls these functions. Let's start easy. Is there any 3rd party program out there that does what I am asking? If not, does anyone know what service or program it is that performs this function or is it tightly integrated into the system?
Lastly, am I the only one who would like to see an improvement here? If I'm talking to myself, I guess I can live with that.
