Old 2.1 Leak to Evil Eris

Hello, I'm trying to figure out if I can upgrade to Evil Eris 3.0. I have previously upgraded my phone to 2.1. Because there are so many versions out there I am not sure which one it is. I would consider it the "old" leak because I upgraded right when the 2.1 leak came up.

The procedure I followed was putting the PB00IMG.zip in the root of my SD card, resetting my phone (help vol down and end call), and pressed the trackball twice. Here's the site I used How to install 2.1 on Droid Eris and some Features|Elite Nerds

I have no idea if this is root or not.

Any help would be great, thanks.

If your on the leak, you can't root yet. End of story.

Evil Eris 3.0 is not actually Android 3.0, but 3.0 of the Evil Eris ROM series. Its still Android 2.1.

Tell us what Settings -> About Phone -> Software information -> Software number is.

Normally, this alone will not be sufficient to uniquely determine what has happened to a phone, but since you mentioned that the only thing which you have done is apply a PB00IMG.ZIP, it will in this case.

Probably you have a leak, but let's check.

runandrew,

I downloaded the file from site you provided the URL for, and sure enough, it is the Leak-V1 ROM. That means you should observe a "Software number" of 2.26.605.2 on your phone.

So, the bad news is that you can not currently root your phone - you are "a leaker".

There is some amount of good news, though: You can get rid of many of the bugs that plague your early version of the phone 2.1 OS by upgrading to Leak-V3 using the exact same method that you used the first time around, but with the Leak-V3 PB00IMG.ZIP file. Here is a link to the Leak-V3 announcement here on Androidforums:

http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/69688-htc-droid-eris-os-2-1v3-download.html

(Note the comment in that post about not using this applies to people that held back on 1.5 - since you applied the Leak-V1, you probably are already aware you won't be getting any OTA updates.)

The leak-V3 has been determined to be essentially identical to the OTA-2.1 (99.5%), and it has the same bootloader as leak-V1 and leak-V2. It is unknown whether it will ever be rooted - but the same thing applies to the Leak-V1 that you are currently using. Installing it will give you the same operating experience as anyone using a "factory" phone has.

One last thing. All the PB00IMG.ZIP - style installs are complete wipes of the phone; if you do this, you should make the same preparations that you would if you were going to do a factory reset.

I don't know how that would have happened, unless the download links in the article that you provided a URL for have been changed.

You can confirm you have the root installed by:

- power off the phone.
- remove SD card (if there is a PB00IMG.ZIP file on it.)
- turn phone on by pressing Vol-down+End/Power

Do you see S-OFF in the first line of the display, and 1.49.2000 in the second line?

If so, you have a rooted phone!

Confirmed, I have those characteristics!

I have a quick question about the install, since I have it rooted, can I just follow the instruction on the EE thread on xda? They are:

INSTALL:

1) Load EvilErisv3.0.zip to the root of your sdcard.
2) Make sure your phone is off, and Hold Power + VOLUME UP
3) Press "wipe" and press "wipe/factory reset" after that, press VOLUME DOWN
4) Press Load .zip from sdcard
5) Select EvilErisv3.0.zip
6) Allow it to install by confirming (Press Trackball)
7) After Installation, allow up to 7 minutes for boot

Also, I still have the PB00IMG.zip in my sd's root folder, should I leave it there while installing EE?

Alright I just loaded it, so I am good to follow the instruction on the EE thread on xda? [ROM]-[6/3/2010] Evil Eris v3.0(HTC Sense UI-Android 2.1)[Overclock and Apps2SD!] - xda-developers

Well, if "just loaded it" means "I have flashed/installed the Amon_RA recovery, and verified that it is running by booting into it.", then yes.

Just curious: given that you haven't had any other ROMs on the phome, is there any particular reason you are fixated on EE3 ?

I've got it running and love it. OC'd and everything, I just have to figure out how to get the live wallpapers.

Why am I fixated towards EE? No reason actually, just looked at the features and thought it best fit me. Do you have a suggestion towards another ROM?

Also, thank you very very much for all your help!

Awesome, good thing we took a closer look to see what you had. The leak-root ROM you had on there is FULL of bugs. You are in a much better place now. Have fun.

I move through ROMs pretty slowly, and haven't used EE since 2.0b, so I'll bet its much improved since then. At this point in time I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Ivanmmj's Official 1.0 or Aloysius V12. There's a number that I haven't tried, so that's not a knock of any I didn't mention.

Spend some time getting familiar with Amon_RA recovery, and doing some backups and wipe+restores. It will save your butt one day!

Also, thank you very very much for all your help!

Do me a favor and delete the URL from your OP - I don't want anyone to use it. Not being an androidforums.com fanboi or anything; I just don't think that sites that give out bad info should be rewarded by mentioning them.
